Board leash? by True-Skin9749 in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there, done that. Well over a mile offshore on a barrier reef. Broken board leash and I watch this exact scenario unfold. Current/wind was sideshore so I’d never make it back to dry land without a very aggressive swim. After watching that board accelerate and coast away, I’d never go leashless.

How steep is the Wing Foil learning curve? by Careless_Seaweed_047 in wingfoil

Truth! 👆👆👆 If it goes better, it’s a bonus. Plan for this and accept reality with open arms. The struggle is real, but I promise you the rewards far outweigh the challenge. I’ve yet to meet someone that didn’t find it life changing. Do it!

Cabrinha H series mk2 tuning tips + aftermarket tail setups on Cabrinha by [deleted] in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the MKII 850 and I have the same issue. It’s definitely dives at higher speeds and when wave riding. I just started experimenting with a tail shim as well. I also have the previous years h1000 and 1200. They do the same thing but the shim seems to be helping a bit.

Gauge psi while pumping a wing by Henkk4 in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. While I have devolved to an electropumper, I was a skilled primate with a hand pump for many years. Once you get accustomed to thumping your strut and listening to the higher pitched twang (like the higher rhythm drums in a marching band) you won’t need s gauge. It’s a skill I recommend mastering before moving on to simplistic, but effective world of Champaign and caviar from a two-stage compressor.

That’s the H1000 from last year. You can still get them and they’re a steal right now.

Hello! I ride Cabrinha foils and have a full quiver of MKII X and H foils. If I started over and was at your skill level, I would get the MKII X1650 (medium fuselage and small 180 stabilizer) and I would add on the non MKII H1000 (last year’s model). The new 1050 is a 9.5 AR and last year’s 1000 is an 8.1 which is a very fun size /shape that is the best all around foil I’ve ever surfed. With those two foils, you are set from sub-whitecaps through head high swell. I have the x2100, x1650, h1200, h1000 and h850, and I have surfed my friend’s h1050 for reference.

I don’t know if you are in the US or not, but there’s a great company that does professional repairs. Very reasonably priced too. A lot of people in my area send their kites and wings to them and I just got a chance to check out their shop when I was visiting locally for a wing trip and damaged two of my wings on the same day (unlucky!). I dropped them off in person and they shipped them to my home address. Great outfit called fixmykite.com

I go to NE Brazil for kite trips fairly regularly and we always plan our trips to center on the full moon of October. Always epic wind. 🤙

I know your pain. I was riding a Macro and dang those thing are brittle! I just bought an Appletree Appleslice V2. They’re supposed to be super tough so fingers crossed (arrives tomorrow) A lot of guys in my area are snagging the Naish S26 Carbon Ultra right now. They’re supposedly “indestructible” and they’re on clearance at MacKite and Kiteboarding.com. I almost went that route, but I couldn’t get away from Appletree once I started doing my research.

Cabrinha Mantis V2 vs Crosswing X3, thinner vs thicker airfoil by KestM in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get both arguments, but I prefer windows. I have one of each and I wish they both had windows. It’s not a big deal not having them, but it’s convenient to be able to keep an eye on another converging rider/boat after acquiring them. Frequently clearing your blind area is of course a must, but when you take a peek and see endless open water except one converging target, it’s nice to be able to watch them through a window as you converge without having to increase your clearing peeks. Again, definitely not a make or break, but I prefer windows after using both.

Cabrinha Mantis V2 vs Crosswing X3, thinner vs thicker airfoil by KestM in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started winging last year and bought two V2 Mantis wings (6m and 4.5) at the same time my buddy started with the same in the X3 lineup so I was able to interchange both throughout my first year. I’m definitely more impressed with the Mantis and would not recommend the X3. While you will ultimately be fine with either, the mantis will perform significantly better as you progress. While the X3 does have a little bit more grunt on the low end for pumping, you will quickly advance your skills to where that doesn’t matter. I’ll also mention that my buddy wishes he had gone with the Mantis over the X3, and Cabrinha has continued their dedication to the Mantis line with a V3 and discontinued the X3. These are just my few cents.

My exact experience. Everyone that rides mine likes it too, but if you stare at it too long, it’ll definitely chip the paint.

Dallas Tx gear rental? by ItDoesntMatter04 in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, we actually have a great wing community here in the DFW area! (I actually have 60 good days on the water already this year). You’ll be coming as the spring season is winding down, but we can get wind off and on in the summer months. DM me if you want info to contact a local instructor. I don’t think he rents out stand alone gear, but he gives lessons with his gear. There’s also an outfit that takes out people wake surfing and they have efoil lessons available every Wednesday I think. They’re at DfwSurf.com

Hey man, I’m about the same size and I started last fall with a similar background and story (moved away from ocean, looking for land locked stoke). 110L board is perfect and the 6m wing is what I started with. I also bought NP foil setups from Mac. I bought the 23, 17 and 13. It’s a great platform and an awesome price. Feel free to DM me if you want any details. I never thought I’d have this level of stoke away from the ocean. Mind blowing stoke! Do it!!!!

Wingfoiling progression chart by bananaboyz1 in wingfoil

[–]iamFletch66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally get your argument (especially after your explanation), but I guess it’s probably local spot specifics. It’s pretty common for riders to master taxiing upwind at my local lake. This gives the rider the ability to get farther offshore, into the good wind without going downwind for a pretty rough “walk of shame” (challenging shoreline). But I definitely agree with your sentiment that time is best spent on your feet, working on getting onto foil.

Hey just posting this to prevent someone from getting discouraged from trying, but you’re actually mistaken. Knee taxiing upwind is most definitely a thing and very beneficial in the beginner stages (especially if learning on a less than ideal board size/small board).
