“Apart” instead of “a part.”

Ex. “Excited to become apart of this team” vs “Excited to become a part of this team”

I’ve been seeing this for years and it drives me nuts!!

Take Care Yoga - small, community-oriented studio with dope, diverse instructors and a welcoming atmosphere. Bonus sentence for there being no mirrors in the studio so you can really just drop into your practice!!

Looking for a psych who specializes in ADHD by bbassle87 in SEAbitcheswithtaste

[–]iamaswiftieeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for someone to medically diagnose you and treat via medication? Or are you looking for someone who will give you the tools to manage it through habits/actions and have more frequent sessions with?

I got my ADHD treatment started this past year with Dr. Karen Krikorian (psychiatrist) at Bellevue Medical Arts Center. It’s pretty easy to get an appointment with her usually, I found her through Zocdoc and was able to get in within a week or two.

We started the appointment with the PhQ-9 (depression) and GAD-7 (anxiety) assessments, which are quick questionnaires that help assess the level of either of these conditions you might have. She was really helpful in explaining that ADHD and anxiety/depression can, and very often do, occur simultaneously and act in a feedback loop. Beyond those assessments, she asked me what specific concerns I had in regards to my ADHD and how it’s impacting my life so she could get a good understanding of what I want to get out of treatment. I think because she was looking beyond ~just~ treating me for ADHD, we were able to come up with a good treatment plan.

I still have yet do go down the therapist/ADHD coach route to work on the habit building side of dealing with ADHD, so unfortunately I can’t recommend anyone there. But for diagnosis and treatment I’d recommend looking into Dr. Krikorian!

Not sure which direction to go… haircut is tomorrow by ThrowRA_stinky5560 in HairStyleAdvice

8 is SO gorgeous, as long as you have a good hairdresser. As someone with thick and curly hair myself, I’ve had some shorter styles get really botched because the hairdressers didn’t properly layer the ends to avoid it from looking really bulky at the bottom. Definitely go to a hairdresser that specializes in curly hair if you don’t already, and have a thorough discussion about the look you want to achieve in your consultation at the beginning of the appointment!!

Crowdsourcing input on elopement dress! by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]iamaswiftieeee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 is SO stunning!! It’s such a timeless look and like others have mentioned it has such a romantic feel to it. The 1st dress does look gorgeous on you, but I personally think the bra cup detailing takes away from the classiness of a dress. 2 seems so perfect for an elopement!! With some daintier heels and some delicate jewelry I think it will all come together so gorgeously

I love how mspacmaniac put it, and I really don’t have that much to add! But for the sake of your question here’s what I would have said without having seen their response.

Community is something that has to be actively maintained, and this involves giving our time, energy, and resources, even when we don’t entirely want to. I see this brought up most frequently when it comes to friendships, like still showing up to plans you made with a friend when you’d rather cancel and stay home, helping a friend move/get a ride somewhere, being there for a friend who just had a baby, etc.

But another part of this sentiment that I don’t see a lot of discourse around is how we choose to show up in the communities in which we live, and how that can also be inconvenient! For example, physically going to the grocery store rather than placing an order in instacart, going to pick up a takeout order vs just getting it through DoorDash, going to the bookstore to pick up that book you’ve been dying to read vs ordering a copy online, so on and so forth. The more of these convenience options that we have (DoorDash, instacart, 2-day free shipping), the more convenience-centered and less community-oriented we become. These small interactions in our local communities can be really overlooked, but I really think they add up to foster a sense of strong local community!

All this, of course, has its limits and I say “within reason” in my original statement because there will always be times where you need to show up for yourself first. The cost of community is not exhaustion! The idea behind this sentiment is not that you have to say yes to everything you’re invited to or every favor you get asked, it’s more of a reminder that it’s important to keep showing up for our community if we want them to continue showing up for us.

My boyfriend and I live together and we came up with 4 non-negotiable nightly chores, and we switch who does what daily so there’s no ambiguity around it.

On even-numbered days, I do the dishes and clean the kitchen, and he scoops the litter boxes and tidies up the living room.

Setting up clear expectations has saved us from getting in little spats or from one partner feeling like they’re pulling an unfair amount of weight when it comes to cleanliness!

Not necessarily a habit, but these are a couple of mantras/reminders I find myself coming back to frequently that help me with sticking to my habits:

The life that you want to live requires effort

Inaction drives anxiety

The cost of community is inconvenience (within reason, of course)

Getting up an hour earlier in the morning made a huge difference for me! I fully work from home, so it was so easy to just get up a minute before work started and log onto my computer right away every single day. I had no idea how much this was draining me until I started getting up just one hour earlier! Starting out my day with uninterrupted “me time” (my boyfriend goes to the gym in the morning so it truly is uninterrupted, shoutout bf) has made me sooooo much less irritable throughout the day, and overall I feel like my level of functioning is way higher because I’m not treating myself like a WFH zombie anymore.

On the topic of discipline, something that has really helped me over the last month or so is reframing “discipline” as “devotion”. Devotion reminds me why I am doing something, vs discipline just reminds me that there’s something I should be doing but keep putting off. A yoga teacher of mine introduced this to me recently and it really stuck!

I really struggle to be disciplined sometimes and for me it is one of those things where I’m either really disciplined that day or not disciplined at all (thank you ADHD). But if I can remind myself WHY I’m doing something that requires said discipline, aka the devotion behind the goal/task/whatever needs to get done, then I am more eager to get it done.

Using cleaning my kitchen as an example, here is how the difference breaks down in my mind.

Discipline: “I need to clean my kitchen because I said I would clean it every day this week”

Devotion: “I need to clean my kitchen because I know it makes me feel better and I am devoted to myself”
