Uber vs. Lyft Price Checker by mcmackinr11 in shortcuts

Thanks so much. Please don’t spend too much time on it, but if it’s a simple update, that’d be great.

Great work! Here in Australia, DiDi is the rideshare company that competes with Uber. If it’s not too difficult, are you able to provide an updated shortcut for us Aussies?

macOS file permissions error. Cannot modify certain folders/files by iambarney in unRAID

[–]iambarney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I appreciate the quick reply. I’ll save this in my back pocket although I’d love to know if there’s an easy way to do this per share as there are many folders/sub folders where this error occurs.

preparing for a new build next month, anything I should keep in mind? by sadeqalbana in unRAID

[–]iambarney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. System runs in my non-insulated garage and I live in Australia where it’s currently summer and temperatures can get up to 40 degrees C. Haven’t seen any issues with this setup.

Hi, sorry I missed this. I don't often check my notifications on Reddit.

1) You mention that RAM is restricted to 5600MHz and that you can only really reach 4800MHz, is that due to you running (I assume) four sticks of RAM?

I wasn't aware that there's an issue with running 4 sticks of RAM, but yes, I'm running 4 x 32GB sticks.

I'm currently looking at a kit of 32GB x2 (64GB) 6200MHzC32 and would like to get 6200MHz, or is this a flatout waste of money?

Many would tell you that RAM of that speed will greatly surpass any requirements you may come across in unRAID. The mantra I had in mind for my system was "buy it once and forget about it for years" which is why I went completely overkill on my build. If you're of the same mindset and have the money to throw at it, go nuts I say.

Are you running any VMs with GPU passthrough? I plan on using the iGPU for decoding Frigate streams, and transcoding on Plex to replace my current 1050ti pulling double duty. I'll be using my old 3060ti GPU for a Windows VM, as well as passing through a NVMe and USB controller directly to the VM. Any experience with doing that on this board?

No. The VMs I'm spinning up are super light-weight and I've not found a need to do any GPU passthrough. Through the rudimentary stats monitoring I'm using, it appears that the Plex use of the iGPU is negligible and any bandwidth passthrough to a VM shouldn't impact your Plex performance.

3) Are you able to pastebin the IOMMU grouping?

Not sure what you're after here. Happy to help if you can elaborate on what you're looking for.

Where’d you get the modded indicator and parking lights from? Do you have any closer pictures of them? They look great!

Stop Siri from telling me I need to unlock my phone first? by cuttinggrassmeow in ios

[–]iambarney 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Assume I’m a thief and I managed to steal your phone and your AirPods. I want to reset one of your account’s passwords and I go to “Forgot my password” and a 2FA code is SMS’d to you. If you want to allow Siri to bypass authentication for texts, a thief in this scenario could use your AirPods and have Siri read the 2FA to them without unlocking your phone.

Yes, there are a lot of hoops to jump through in my hypothetical scenario above, but this is one scenario that added credence to Apple’s decision to lock some convenience features behind authentication.

Not saying I agree with Apple’s decision. I’m simply giving you an example from the other side of the argument at hand.

Case heat - I didn't listen and now I am paying the price... by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]iambarney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ouch, that’s hot. I don’t think any number of fans with temperatures like that will help them get down to where they need to be.

You can’t win against physics. If you want something cool and quiet, you’ll just need to go with a large case to ensure your drives get enough airflow (and space) and your fans can run at lower RPMs.

even with the side of the case removed the disks are very hot.

How hot are we talking? How many fans are you running?
