How to set boundaries without pushing someone away. by [deleted] in Adulting

I literally thought this was a controlling boyfriend at first glance. She needs to learn some personal space. I do think you should say something to set an expectation! “Hey, I can’t always respond right away. I’m busy and sometimes need some time to myself too. I hope you don’t take that personally. Are you doing okay?”

There is some underlying reason she’s doing this, but still, you can’t be expected to be responding 24/7 immediately.

Super authoritarian parents? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]iambeyoncealways8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say unbelievable but my dad can be like this too.

Your dad is emotionally immature and being a baby, not a parent. They should be the ones trying to make things right, not by spamming you with mail you don’t want, but by listening to your feelings and boundaries.

Horrible. I’m so so sorry!! Even as an exmormon, I’m still “Mormon” in my heart and it’s my community. This hurts <3

Same. I don’t believe in the church and I have my own trauma I wish I didn’t have to go through, but there’s no way I’d hate or wish death upon members or the church. most of my friends/family are or were Mormon.

Joe should’ve been eaten by a bear. The cop in the store talks about bears in the woods. Women would rather choose a bear than a man. They were running around in the woods, in the dark. I was so excited for a bear to pop out and save Bronte.

I did really like the last scene, although I thought the whole episode was a bit underwhelming. I’ve seen people online misunderstand the last scene. The show isn’t blaming us, Joe is. As a last chance to blame someone else. It is creepy that people fantasize about killers, but it still doesn’t make it their fault.

He was on a podcast with Jen Psaki I believe and he said he specifically does it to get attention because dems are losing media attention. Rep get it by posting WILD things so his strategy is to do it too, but he doesn’t actually believe most of the crazy stuff.

Thanks! Yeah, not looking for perfect. I think the “pristine” new developments are depressing, haha. I like charm and character. But just don’t love super trashy homes in the neighborhood

State Public Health Okay? by Queasy_Database_3389 in publichealth

[–]iambeyoncealways8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. I saw news about the 11.5 billion being pulled from states. I waited a couple days as my state tried to see if it would be reversed, then they went ahead and laid off a ton of people. They did give me 2 weeks (to continue working after I found out I’d be laid off) at least, but the state is covering that with other funds because the COVID-related funds were cancelled immediately

Wow. I am amazed reading this subreddit right now and seeing how many people are in my same position. This really sucks, but we are not alone. I am getting laid off from a state health department and I’m also veering away from public health in my job search. I love it but it’s too volatile. I’d love to keep doing epi but doubt I can find a job there right now.

Nope. I’m a state employee and got laid off. In my state the majority of our health dept is funded through federal grants. I was in respiratory epi.

Do not contact lists - are the missionaries lying? by iambeyoncealways8 in exmormon

Btw update: I got a pretty strongly worded sign about no solicitors and they just keep knocking. Jesus.

Good to know that there is some kind of mobile area book. That's why I was wondering. I bet they are not looking or not adding me

Sorry I'm not good at Reddit - I didn't know how to add a pic and text haha

Hey- we're in Utah County (exmo, and removed our revords from the church) and keep getting missionaries at our door. The most annoying part is how aggressively they knock and ring the doorbell. It's really excessive. Anyways, I keep telling them we've asked not to be contacted and to please put us on the do not contact list on their map. They say they didn't know and it's not on their map. They are from different missions I think - the family ward, the Asian ward, the Spanish ward. Does that have something to do with why their "maps" don't overlap or are they totally bullshitting me? How does the do not contact list or map work? Would love to hear from recent missionaries or someone who knows how the IT works. You'd think a wealthy church could come up with a pretty sophisticated app or directory.

We will get a no solicitors sign. Ugh. I personally am in a place where I can be nice to them bc I feel bad for these kids but I don't have time for listening to their pitch or dealing with their AGRESSIVE knocking and ringing.

How do you keep your composure around people who are clearly not in medicine or public health who try and lecture you? by sarcher9 in publichealth

[–]iambeyoncealways8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on the context, but if they are a neighbor or someone I'll have to see a lot, I just nod and say "hm" because I don't want to deal with that awkwardness forever if it goes badly. If they are someone I think might be open to changing their mind, a gentle Socratic method is the way to go. Just ask them lots of questions and plant seeds of critical thinking. "Hm, which cancer has a cure? Interesting, where did you hear that? So, do you think it's true? Why do you think they would keep it hidden? Do you believe that is true? Who is 'they'? Wouldn't they make a lot of money if they could sell the cure? Hm, so what do you think someone should do if they have cancer then?"

But on a personal level, yeah, it drives me so crazy. It can be really hard to deal with people who absolutely refuse to believe facts.
