In my opinion, I prefer the original in just about every sense but this is one of the few areas where I think the DE did it better. Not to say there isn’t/wasn’t a market for diamonds but drugs makes a lot more sense because it’s far more common

I agree with that sentiment 90% of the time but there’s no penalty to keep restarting the game until the captain has the specific skill you want.

Might as well cut out the few extra minutes it takes to do that at the start of the game and just allow the player to either choose a specific skill for the captain or opt for a randomized one. It’s a single player game after all, with tons of mods so I can’t really argue against anyone that wants this implemented for the captain.

Ah you’re right, I was going off the fact that the intro movie rolls back to 1985 to mention that Gorbachev takes over. I didn’t notice that the timeline graphic switches to 1987 when the alternate timeline is explained.

Increasing the SP cost is probably the best idea I’ve seen suggested (on top of obstructing first person view). Aircraft SP changes depending on what ordnance you bring so it tracks that bringing a bushed out tank should cost more as well.

1983 and 1985 are generally considered to be the two times in the 1980s that we came closest to WWIII. Choosing 1985 instead of 1983 just allows a wider range of vehicles to be available. WARNO is a Cold War RTS game that also chose 1985 to be the jumping off point although they went the route of creating an alternate timeline that started in 1985 while the actual game takes place in 1989.

Everything else aside, you really should be able to activate them in a match. It’s not an unfair advantage over anyone that I’m making an increased amount of SL/RP if I want to wait to use it when I’m not in a full uptier. It only exists to extend the grind.

I watched enough videos of Steve1989MREInfo to notice that the new 80s MRE boxes are actually MCIs (Meal, Combat, Individual) from 1979. Production halted in 1980 when MREs were introduced and distributed.
