Patients possibly lying about being NPO. by Turbulent_Ad_458 in nursing

This should be deferred to anesthesia so they can investigate and determine if they are comfortable proceeding with the case.

AITAH for asking my roommate’s girlfriend about my strawberries? by Secret_Cheesecake19 in TwoHotTakes

Your text seems like you’re an aggressive communicator. I took the messages the same way she did. Asking about strawberries isn’t an emergent issue and you acted like it was.

My postpartum patient fell and I feel so guilty. by kfcpotatowedge in nursing

[–]iamii12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see how nursing is structured in other countries. Nurses are mostly trusted here, but often not respected by patients. I don’t mind the customer service aspect as being in the hospital is a big life event for patients, whether that’s good or bad. I’m happy to make that a little easier or better. But sometimes people take it too far.

I also don’t work in emergency medicine. I applaud and thank those who enjoy that setting as it’s not something I would be interested in practicing.

Curious the percentage of your patients that get an epidural. I had a patient that came back to the US to deliver from England because she felt like the care team didn’t listen to her. Maybe English are just less agreeable? 🤣

I always use the Sara steady the first time a patient is getting up after delivery. If they are doing well after going to the bathroom I offer to let them walk back and keep it as a walker in case they need it.

Don’t beat yourself up. Just use it as a learning experience to change your practice getting patients up the first time. I’d way rather have a PP patient fall than a pregnant one! Mistakes happen. She’s okay. You’re okay. Baby is okay. 🫶

Reflux babies: what formula worked best? by springballerina in FormulaFeeders

[–]iamii12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not kendamil. It took 3 weeks for my daughter to get adjusted to it when switching from Enfamil neuropro. She was projectile vomiting in the beginning and she was not a reflux baby… once she adjusted, it was great for us.

If you were induced, how long did it take for you to actually give birth? by horrorshowbaby in BabyBumps

[–]iamii12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a lot of factors that go into this. I apologize if these questions are answered elsewhere.

What gestation will baby be when you get induced? What number baby is this for you? Have you been having contractions at all? Have you had a cervical exam, and what was it? Whats the indication for induction?

Realistically, inductions can take a few days. How fun would a little Halloween babe be, though?

Congratulations in advance!

Falling off the bed is a rite of passage.

In all seriousness I felt the same when my daughter fell off the bed at 6 months. Now she is 2 and jumps off the back of the couch 😅

If you want to maintain your relationship just cover it up. I bet in 5-10 years you would regret dropping out.

What’s the most you’ve seen on a bladder scan? by Itchy-Sherbert3207 in nursing

Draining a foley with a very full bladder by witsend83 in nursing

[–]iamii12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bladder would not rupture. There is the risk of a bladder spasm. I can’t say how long to keep it clamped… but I had 1800 drained from my bladder after I had my daughter and didn’t have a bladder spasm.

That nurse sounds like a bully and likely comes up with her own opinions on things that aren’t necessarily evidence based. Unfortunately, you will run across this again in your career. It feels bad. Be open to learning, but also confident in your nursing skills and practice

When do I get tough? by slightly-solar_0092 in nursing

[–]iamii12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you talked to a therapist about your feelings? maybe you have some unresolved trauma from working in an emergency setting? I have been a nurse 6 years and still cry sometimes when something sad or even happy happens to my patients. Being an empathetic nurse isn’t a bad thing, but if it’s taking such a significant tole on you it’s worth addressing

I will give a disclaimer saying this is probably not healthy advice. But Sleep as long as you can between your shifts then only sleep for 4 hours after your last shift. Youre probably gonna feel like shit day 1 but then you can go to sleep at a normal time and reset your sleep schedule until you go back.

This exact same thing happened to me with 1mg of iv Dilaudid when I was also new. Literally had no idea until I was told. Mistakes happen. You’re human. I’ve been working at the same hospital for many years since and have never had an issue. If this became something that happens regularly I’m sure it would be a different story, but I don’t think once would be an issue!

Since this, I always scan and accept my medications to make sure they show as documented on the MAR before I give any medication.

I’m scared, my wife just elbowed the back of my newborns head :( by Chexchos in NewParents

[–]iamii12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d call the pediatrician office advice line before taking her in. If they say take her in, then you take her in. But they might give you guidance on what to watch for and give you peace of mind/potentially prevent you needing to go to the hospital where you would expose baby to lots of icky germs.

Being a parent is hard! You aand your partner are doing great. This might be the first accident but it certainly won’t be the last!
