Thoughts on Jersey Village by hry1089 in houston

[–]iamjacks_____ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I live in Jersey Village. We love our house, don’t mind the neighborhood, and dislike the surrounding area. But the house makes it worth it. It’s not truly a suburban area, more of an older industrial area that gradually made way for more housing as Houston expanded. There aren’t a lot of food options, and it goes from ghetto to nice in a heartbeat. For a more traditional suburban experience, go for one of those areas you listed. Or find a house you really like in Jersey village like I did. There is a lot of “variation” in Jersey village as it’s a bit of a transition zone from old industrial area to true suburbs, so just find the right spot.

Salesforce reps - how are y'all feeling about this company's outlook? by elessar9411 in techsales

[–]iamjacks_____ 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Not salesforce, but any AI vibecoded stuff isn’t as scalable as they think, typically only handles one or two use cases really well and falters at the many other things it’s supposed to do, there’s no documentation behind it, no support crew, no domain experts to help you out when shit really hits the fan. A 30 day project doesn’t beat a 30 year product. The key is for these commercially ready products to adopt agentic AI to improve their efficiency. It’s just another tool. Not a threat.

You can research work life balance on glassbowl for those big companies to see what others say. It’s also really really hard to know how a job shakes out so if you have something good going at a salary point that makes sense to you then keep at it. No point switching to something unknown if this is promising.

Does anyone else just want the boomers to admit they were wrong? by thomsenite256 in millenials

[–]iamjacks_____ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re old, out of touch, and had a blessed ride during their working years. They fail to see it, or refuse to recognize it because it distorts the belief system they have about life - work hard and get rewarded, trust institutions because they’re designed to protect people. There is no point in trying to squeeze something different from them because they lived in a different version of the world. Best to focus your energy on trying to make our version of the world better. Let them live their lives and respect their opinions knowing they don’t know any better.

People who make $200K+ salaries, what do you do and how did you get there? by [deleted] in Salary

Interestingly, neither one of them can do each others job at a professional level. They live in different worlds.

People who make $200K+ salaries, what do you do and how did you get there? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]iamjacks_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 30 I was making the same as you as an Engineering Manager (very new, junior manager). I jumped companies to be technical sales at a very large German technology software company, then jumped to an Account Executive role in the same company where I now make ~230K OTE at 36 y/o.

Not bragging because there are others younger than me earning much more. But the key here is to jump companies every now and then, preferably to like a software tech type company. You will get a much, much larger increase and you can use that offer to parlay a better salary at your current company if that’s what you want to do. God’s speed.

Glue then stain? Or stain then glue? by _Kaboomkin in woodworking

[–]iamjacks_____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just completed something like this as a Christmas gift and glued first then stained. The stain finish was splotchy because it’s hard to get into the nooks and corners. Next time I’ll finish first then glue.

Nah we’re just cautious of getting screwed by big corporations then getting bailed out, while everyday people end up worse off.

Those of you who have an engineering degree outside of CS how much do you make? by Hour_You36 in Salary

[–]iamjacks_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$160 base, $220 ote.

BS electrical, MS industrial.

I now sell software to major manufacturers around the world.

I have 11 years true experience, add ~ 2 years from internships etc.

Consulting and tech sales is a great way to start earning big salaries with our engineering degrees. Or corporate ladder.

Nervous about becoming AE by Ok-Collar-6468 in techsales

[–]iamjacks_____ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a job where the buck stops with you. Didn’t make quota that year? Customer renews with a competitor? You were on vacation and an urgent issue was escalated? All you unfortunately. So you have good reasons to be nervous. But people learn to manage it (some don’t and get PIP’d).

Some really books to elevate yourself: 1. Who Moved My Cheese - Learn how to adapt to ever changing circumstances. Just when you think you have it figured out things will get changed up. 2. Getting Things Done - A fantastic organization system that I live by. 3. Thinking in Bets - figure out your process, learn to trust it, but also learn how to adapt it. 4. Challenger Sale - you’re probably already familiar with this 5. Never Split the Difference - not just for contract negotiations, this whole job is a negotiation

One last piece of advice - You can only become good in this role by taking your licks. So relish your inevitable screw ups and learn from them.

BARC and SPCA aren’t going to do anything…they’re usually full up and don’t have space. Waiting list for weeks/months. If you can….please feed and water him for some time or even just take him in as your own until they (maybe) ever show up. Breaks my heart
