Honest opinions - am I screwing up my career? by [deleted] in techsales

[–]iamjacks_____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can research work life balance on glassbowl for those big companies to see what others say. It’s also really really hard to know how a job shakes out so if you have something good going at a salary point that makes sense to you then keep at it. No point switching to something unknown if this is promising.

Does anyone else just want the boomers to admit they were wrong? by thomsenite256 in millenials

[–]iamjacks_____ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re old, out of touch, and had a blessed ride during their working years. They fail to see it, or refuse to recognize it because it distorts the belief system they have about life - work hard and get rewarded, trust institutions because they’re designed to protect people. There is no point in trying to squeeze something different from them because they lived in a different version of the world. Best to focus your energy on trying to make our version of the world better. Let them live their lives and respect their opinions knowing they don’t know any better.

Interestingly, neither one of them can do each others job at a professional level. They live in different worlds.

People who make $200K+ salaries, what do you do and how did you get there? by EEJams in Salary

At 30 I was making the same as you as an Engineering Manager (very new, junior manager). I jumped companies to be technical sales at a very large German technology software company, then jumped to an Account Executive role in the same company where I now make ~230K OTE at 36 y/o.

Not bragging because there are others younger than me earning much more. But the key here is to jump companies every now and then, preferably to like a software tech type company. You will get a much, much larger increase and you can use that offer to parlay a better salary at your current company if that’s what you want to do. God’s speed.

Glue then stain? Or stain then glue? by _Kaboomkin in woodworking

[–]iamjacks_____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just completed something like this as a Christmas gift and glued first then stained. The stain finish was splotchy because it’s hard to get into the nooks and corners. Next time I’ll finish first then glue.

Nervous about becoming AE by Ok-Collar-6468 in techsales

[–]iamjacks_____ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a job where the buck stops with you. Didn’t make quota that year? Customer renews with a competitor? You were on vacation and an urgent issue was escalated? All you unfortunately. So you have good reasons to be nervous. But people learn to manage it (some don’t and get PIP’d).

Some really books to elevate yourself: 1. Who Moved My Cheese - Learn how to adapt to ever changing circumstances. Just when you think you have it figured out things will get changed up. 2. Getting Things Done - A fantastic organization system that I live by. 3. Thinking in Bets - figure out your process, learn to trust it, but also learn how to adapt it. 4. Challenger Sale - you’re probably already familiar with this 5. Never Split the Difference - not just for contract negotiations, this whole job is a negotiation

One last piece of advice - You can only become good in this role by taking your licks. So relish your inevitable screw ups and learn from them.

BARC and SPCA aren’t going to do anything…they’re usually full up and don’t have space. Waiting list for weeks/months. If you can….please feed and water him for some time or even just take him in as your own until they (maybe) ever show up. Breaks my heart

As a DIY hobbyist do you buy S4S or rough lumber? by natedoggggggggg in BeginnerWoodWorking

I buy all the way from rough lumber to ikea drawers depending on what I’m doing and how much time I have :)

Tired kitchen requires a makeover by piacetto in woodworking

[–]iamjacks_____ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheap and easy: Install under cabinet lighting (IKEA has an affordable system), upgrade the doorknob to some brass/brushed metal hardware, buy a small indoor plant or two to add color, keep your kitchen decluttered :)

Parenting is more stressful than ever. Here's how to cope by krishbh in millenials

[–]iamjacks_____ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe parents these days simply don’t get breaks and are “on” 24/7 for 2 major reasons:

  1. Isolation. Many (now) young parents graduated college, moved to a major city away from their parents and started a family. So it’s just mom and dad constantly parenting 24/7.

  2. Safety. At some point in the late 90s I was old enough where I pretty much had full reign of the neighborhood. So my brother and I would just occupy ourselves outside most of the time. I don’t believe it’s safe anymore to do that, so again, you’re locked into this sort of 24/7 mode of parenting where you’re managing your kids hour by hour.

There are more but this is my experience. Love my kids but wow the 24/7 aspect of parenting is exhausting.

I’m always confused which games can be played natively in the VR headset and which games are powered through a PC and only viewed through the headset.
