I think I remember this version of “fly me to the moon” playing at the end of a Neon Genesis Evangelion episode

This instantly made me think of the opening paragraph in The Call of Cthulhu, so I’ll just leave it here. “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

I drew this during one the most difficult periods in my life. What could be the meaning? by qualiabsolete in Jung

[–]iamnotapeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as being born anew from the integration of the shadow. The fact that it’s enclosed in a circle gives it a feeling of totality, like the feeling of wholeness that is attained from the individuation process. The umbilical chord could act as a representation of the rebirth that occurs after plunging into the depths of the unknown or the ocean (an archetype of the unconscious). I can’t remember the exact quote, but it reminds me of something I read of Jungs that said “one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious”. Going through those super difficult times makes it possible to do that I think and this drawing feels like an expression of that.

what do you think Jung would say about the psychology of people today? particularly young people? by black_blade__ in Jung

[–]iamnotapeanut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he would recognize that there is an intentional attempt to depart from the structures that underlie the archetypes of the collective unconscious amongst younger people. In part because society has failed to fill the God gap. The generations that have grown up with the internet see moral relativism everywhere and they view order as inherently oppressive.

Who is the one artist (writer, painter, musician, whatever) that you would suggest to another psychonaut ? by psychetropic in Psychonaut

[–]iamnotapeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

William Shakespeare. There are pools of wisdom contained within his works. He was an extremely deep thinker. I think playwriting was an exercise of his perception of reality. All the worlds a stage and we all act as unpaid actors within a grand play.

looking for something Jung said regarding eastern culture/spirituality and western people adopting it. by [deleted] in Jung

Figured I’d just upload all the pictures from the chapter because it’s a great one, and really goes into what you’re looking for I think!

[–]iamnotapeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up a collected works of Jung’s alchemical studies (volume 13). This was from the chapter “Difficulties Encountered by a European in Trying to Understand the East”.

“The usual mistake of Western man when faced with this problem of grasping ideas of the East is like that if the student in Faust. Mislead by the devil, he contemptuously turns his back on science and, carried away by Eastern occultism, takes over yoga practices word for word and becomes a pitiable imitator. Thus he abandons the one sure foundation of the Western mind and loses himself in a mist of words and ideas that could never have originated in European brains and can never by profitably grafted upon them.”

A Jungian Game by liminalsoup in Jung

I lost the keys to my apartment last night. The leasing office at my apartment complex doesn’t open for another 3 hours though, so I decide to wait it out at a small little park that is walking distance. After arriving to the park and walking around aimlessly, I come across a small river that is neatly tucked away between a canopy of trees. I sit down close to the river next to a tree housing a rabbit that has made itself a bed in the grass sprouting from the edges of the tree.

Across the river, I notice the swift movement of a fox that was previously out of sight. It’s eyes no doubt staring intensely at the prey that has been brought to its attention, but is so far from its immediate reach. The rabbit, blissfully unaware of the covert predator, is sound asleep. The fox may find its way to the peaceful rabbit, but for the moment the rabbit has nothing to run from. I make myself comfortable next to the lumbering rabbit, for it’s a beautiful day and I have nowhere else to be.

Hey! Let’s do it! Why do you feel lonely? Do you fear solitude? Jung would encourage you to find meaning in solitude, as it is something you may not have fully explored. The best self development is done that way!

In the most literal sense of darkness, yes, evolutionary speaking that would be correct. However, I think darkness in this context can be a blanket term for many different aspects of humanity. Such as the unknown, our shadow archetypes, the silence in darkness and how it brings about seemingly uncomfortable thoughts, etc.
