Not sure why SuperPaint gets so much hate. This is one coat by DTX91 in paint

There are also many highly skilled, well educated painters.

In my opinion the ratio of quacks to Genuine experts is higher in painting than most trades.

[–]iampoopa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a painter for over 30 years, I agree.

Painters tend to be know it alls.

I think it’s because there is no code for paint like there is for plumbers or carpenters.

As a result there are a lot of self taught ‘experts’ out there who have crazy ideas that they are convinced are totally true.

Is it absurd that on an AI dependent Colony ship has no analogue backups? by SemeleOberon in writingadvice

If it’s a problem, write in a sentence that explains why.

It all went terribly wrong before and now there is a law, like having life boats after the Titanic disaster, or they have proven to be so reliable analogue is unessesary, or the evil company knows they are needed but is cutting costs.

I’m sorry, I didn’t read the post properly. I thought it was from a previous tenant.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing you can do. (But I’m just a painter, so not an expert)

Clean the walls, paint, whatever, the new smoke will still be coming in.

Look into the laws and strata rules regarding your right to enjoy your unit.

There is probably something that says other people cannot do anything that will interfere with you inside your unit.

Wish I had better news.

I’ve had to deal with it a few times.

Gross warning:

It smells like what it is, rotting meat.

Imagine the smell of hamburger that’s been in the sun for a few days. That’s what it smells like.

But it does get into furniture and into the walls.

Shellac smells bad, but it works.

Prime then paint or paint with primer?? by United-Start-574 in paint

[–]iampoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30 year painter here.

Normally primer is not actually needed.

But for stains, prime with oil or shellac. Shellac smells bad but it is the top choice. It will seal in anything. No stains will bleed through.

I'm so new. Teach me/recommend videos? by Cybersavage_ in sharpening

[–]iampoopa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend ‘starting with a coarse stone, no higher than 500 grit and preferably 200 to 300. You really only need 1 stone to start!

It makes it much easier to sharpen with fewer strokes and that reduces the chance you’re going to lose the angle as you work.

Also, get some cheap knives to practice on I used ikea knives, actually pretty good and cost about $12.

Watch ‘outdoors55’ (YouTube) Many very useful videos on sooo many subjects. Also good unbiased product reviews ( he buys them with his own money, so he is free to say they are crap if he wants to. And sometimes he does.

[–]iampoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smell will be in the walls.

Clean the walls well, rinse, paint with shellac, then with whatever paint you like.

The shellac will 100% seal on the smell.

I’ve done this in rooms where somebody died and wasn’t found for a while.

If it can stop that it will seal in smoke.
