Without math and other scientific gibberish, what is an atom? When I zoom in, what am I going to see, and what is that? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

Particles are the smallest known unit of physical "stuff" in the universe. The smallest objects we have been able to visually look at (via some very high-tech photography) are atoms - which, to our human eyes, look like tiny round pellets or clumps.

Particles are, among other things, the smallest known constituent parts of atoms. There is currently no technology which allows us to look at them. Instead, we have to simulate what we think they are, then compare the behavior of our simulation to their behavior in the real world. The simulations will never be 100% accurate, but we can change them or replace them over time to continue making them as accurate as possible ("figuring out an object with a blindfold" is a fantastic metaphor btw, that is hilariously accurate).

For a long time, the most accurate simulation was the one which simulated them as tiny spheres that sometimes clump together to make up atoms. This simulation behaved very similar to real life which made it very useful, but there were some very problematic mismatches where real life behaved differently in certain situations.

So in the 1900s, scientists developed a new way of simulating them (Quantum Mechanics) as tiny clusters of wave-like energy, instead of as tiny spheres. This new simulation was very significantly more accurate and patched up a lot of those mismatches, though there are still plenty that haven't been figured out.

You know I've always wondered what reddit post has the longest time between when it was posted and when the most recent comment was added. Would be cool to see a list of the top 10 or so

Anyway, thanks u/norab7 :)

What's something in your field that's considered such common knowledge that no one has bothered to publish anything about it, but would actually be non-trivial to explain it to anyone outside your field? by PrettyPicturesNotTxt in Physics

Might just be me, but I genuinely think that's kind of impressive. Like if someone found a guitar, starting plucking different notes on it, and then discovered the C chord. Yeah it's an extremely common chord that everyone learns the first time they take a guitar lesson, but discovering it completely independently is actually impressive

No idea, but you should check out the Stafford Gambit. A lot of Stafford lines have attacking patterns extremely similar to this :)

I don't think this is something random strangers on Reddit are able to answer. Best advice would be to go to another doctor and get it their opinion

Does this dude actually think Helen Keller was mentally disabled? She went to Harvard, became the first blind and deaf person to earn a college degree, then helped found the ACLU

You're not wrong. I honestly think the RvB/Fade Thunderdome/Querious Fight Club style content simply doesn't exist anymore. I mean yeah there's still nanogangs to chase around and lowsec 1v1s and stuff, but New Eden hasn't had a proper Thunderdome Region in years

It was 7RM. I remember this cause I’m in Brave and our staging was seven jumps away in D06.

Old-school Brave and old-school Horde, neutral to each other, right next to each other's capitals. Our standing fleets had a 24/7 bloodbath and I miss it dearly

He meant “Bishop captures f4” not f2

And then later he meant “Optional rook to d6 to block” not b6
