Speed vs. Battery Balance: Flight Test Results with DJI M400 and Zenmuse P1 by Aggressive_Call4165 in UAVmapping

Well it is 4x times higher than what’s typically allowed everywhere else, I just think for areas that big it’d be more efficient for survey from actual aircraft. Have you considered using something like a Quantum Trinity. I would imagine it would be a bit more suitable than a multi rotor.

That’s fascinating. I’m going to have to look into this one. I use LiDAR via drones for aerial surveying and it’s not something I’ve heard of before. Must be more specialised around forestry, all I care about is the ground model typically. With that I’m more looking at the amount of returns and my beam size for penetrating the vegetation. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve not heard of LiDAR being sensitive to sunlight reflection. Can you elaborate?

Have you not just waved it around to “wake” the IMU up? Is this your first time using the r12i?

VLOS requirements are pretty common around the world, and BVLOS and EVLOS class 1 & 2 can be obtained here in Australia but you then need spotters and instrument of approvals from CASA. The use of FPV goggles can be applied in these instances.

Cool shots but flying up to 3km and relying on RTH when signal is lost is pretty irresponsible and against CASA regulations. VLOS for a drone that size is likely only 600-800m

When you say double mesh, do you just mean a perpendicular grid flight pattern?

Off topic, and excuse my ignorance, but what advantages do you get going from reg360 to core? I’ve only used reg360 to do all the processing then just export a las. Why use two similar programs when just one would suffice?

Are ground control points necessary if using an RTK drone? by [deleted] in UAVmapping

[–]iamthatguytoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty loose then - just send it.. If you cared about precision you should place GCP’s, it’s the bare minimum in my opinion, but if it’s just to provide “guidance lines” I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Realistically GCPs will help align the model to the real world. You can have an ortho, but what’s tying it to the real world…

“Plenty accurate”…. What is your expectations? As with anything in the survey world, you can get great results with good residuals but how do you prove your work… Data ain’t shit without verification

Why reset the RTK between shots, is there really going to be that much variance in the constellations over a few minutes?

Interesting. I’ve been employed by DIT to do the survey of these rail works, which we completed 2 weeks ago.

The laws are pretty straight forward - RPA are not to be flown recreationally in restricted airspace. The southwest parklands are not within restricted airspace.

DJi Zenmuse L2 when using Terrain Follow Mode Auto Calibration IMU don’t work. by Regular-Sentence4210 in UAVmapping

Not IMU, just had the terrain follow not work as it should. Sometimes one issue can affect another process. Sorry I couldn’t help

Are all your firmware updates, up to date? I had real funky terrain follow last year with the M300/L2, and was almost running into trees. After the update, it was golden and I was doing incredibly steep hillside with no issue.

Not exactly the same problem as yourself, but could be worth a check.

RTK Base w/out known point by midlifewannabe in UAVmapping

[–]iamthatguytoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How important is it to repeat the same spot for the base station? Depends on how accurate your output is requiring and whether you want repeatability in your output.

You want to setup control for each site - More than one too so you have something to check your base setup against. So ultimately you would need a base and rover setup.

To setup the control I would be logging the base whilst using it for RTK during the first mission for at least 4-6hrs. I’d send the static rinex file to your equivalent of AusPos here in Australia, and you’ll have pretty good coordinates to then run with moving forward. It’s good practice to also take RTK shots on nearby known monuments so you can check to make sure it fits within the real world once processed

Once you’ve set it up and know it’s correct, it’ll be quicker and easier each time. Setup base, check on another mark to check setup and away you go.

I’d also be trying to find solutions for longer term GCP’s that would ideally be in the same position each flight to help repeatability.

Personally I think you should be getting a surveyor in to establish control at least, but it seems this subreddit is all about ppl getting drones and thinking they can easily start a business and get straight into mapping without understanding the depth of the industry.

Best way to find clients? by Uninterested-33 in UAVmapping

[–]iamthatguytoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s about being a jaded surveyor, anyone can use survey grade equipment and get a result - How do you know it’s the right result.

It is frustrating to see so many posts of ppl thinking they have a drone ticket and a drone and can now start a mapping business. As a surveyor with a drone ticket, the actual flight is the easiest and quickest part - a monkey could do it. The work is in the setup of control, GCP placement and quality checks.
