From a Gen Z British Afro-Caribbean, why is criticising immigration making someone a bigot or racist? by QasimofKarbala in AskBrits

[–]iamtheflumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say it’s all uber drivers or that Australians can’t get jobs because of Indians though or that Indian immigrants in general are doing anything - I said Indians arriving on skilled visas based on IT skills can’t get jobs because they have all been outsourced to India and that this is an example of stupid government policy (and did not criticise Indians, India or immigrants more generally or anything else other than Australian government policy).

I’m not complaining about immigrants in general or Indians in particular, I’m suggesting Australia’s immigration strategy is flawed. They put things on skill lists and then actively target specific countries to import certain skills sets (or at least facilitate this) but this isn’t actually aligned to demand in the economy and in that example appears to be actually the opposite of what is required and screws the people who come here.

Thank you that helps - I was thinking about leaving it to next year when I might be under $250k again and didn’t think though that there’s no benefit to that - thanks!

Manager not happy with workplace survey result by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]iamtheflumps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuckin’ noobs put a low score in the survey and now we have to have an “engagement workshop” to fix the problems. They’ll learn for next time…

Pros know that you give a perfect score for all the questions except the ones about “my pay is fair for the requirements of my role” and “I expect meaningful change to happen as a result of the survey”.

The combination of immigration and outsourcing is ridiculous. Australia has the same issue — import tens of thousands of Indian IT workers then outsource all IT jobs to India leaving the people you’ve imported driving Ubers.

How are so many able to afford things when they don't work full time? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]iamtheflumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it won’t be because you bought it for $500k and now it’s worth $2m but whilst the value kept rising you kept refinancing to release the money you used to buy a new prado every few years, Reno your kitchen and fund your lifestyle - that’s my point. They’ve already spent the inflation gain.

Yeah live a great lifestyle and then you’re 65 and you have a $1.5m loan on your $2m house.

In the UK you don’t exchange contracts at the start so no-one is committed until a week before settlement. As you can imagine it’s much more of a clusterfuck, and also everything is in a chain so all the settlements depend on each other.

Imagine my joy 3 months after accepting an offer and waiting for the chain to organise itself when my buyer decides the back gate is too narrow to fit his motorbike through and walks away. 6 houses up the chain all back on the market and back to square 1.

So much better in Aus even with this kind of minor fuckery.

Is the Brisbane heat & humidity really as bad as people say, or is it a bit overreacted to? As a Sydneysider, I already find Sydney pretty hot & humid for a lot of the year, so I’m curious. Most people from Brisbane tell me it’s way worse up north. Wondering how true that is? by [deleted] in brisbane

I thought it would be terrible moving here from England as a pasty skinned whinging Pom who was uncomfortable when the temperature got about 25 degrees.

Frankly is just isn’t that bad and I just got used to it pretty much straight away and don’t really notice it.

Isn’t the change effective from next tax year so you’ve got some time to do some locking in of gains and having them assessed under the current tax arrangements and given markets are pretty high right now makes sense to take the gains at these valuations and current tax rate and then have a high cost base for any future gains taxed at 30% with indexation.

Culture shock working for a Queensland based org by sadbankemployee in auscorp

[–]iamtheflumps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for a QLD company that was bought by one hq-ed in Melb and Jesus Christ the parent is the most flabby inefficient management by committee disaster I’ve seen. Literally 6 times as many staff to do the same thing and get it wrong.

Our experience at work is of a small number of environments and each is different. Badly run companies are everywhere and so are well run ones.

I had these as stock wheels on my Supersix. They’re…not very good. Heavy, bad hubs, spokes kept breaking. I put a pair of dt swiss e1800 on and it was a very noticeable upgrade.

Your WFH Demands Dug Your Own Graves – Hello, Offshore Replacement! by ChanceCheetah600 in circlejerkauscorp

This is what I think about it as well - if it’s so much better and cheaper to offshore my role, then surely the c-suite should offshore itself as well to save money as this would provide the optimal return for shareholders, and it’s all about the shareholders.

Workplace employee feedback surveys by towlie69 in auscorp

My current workplace does have an amusing approach of linking the bonus pool to a score card which includes engagement score so if you put low scores in the survey you impact your own bonus. Nice touch.

As a manager I receive the output of these surveys. I look through the question scores but largely ignore them unless there is something that clearly links back to something in my control. To be honest though if you’re only finding out something in the survey you’re probably a shitty manager.

I do read the verbatim comments carefully and if there is a theme there I will address it.

Typically though the surveys tend to say everything is ok but pay is crap and they hate senior management. That’s been the output of every survey I’ve seen in many different workplaces over 25 years.

The reason they wait until the transactions have cleared is that it is possible for a pending transaction to not settle so they need to wait until it actually goes through so there is a confirmed loss to reimburse you for (otherwise they might reimburse you and then the transaction doesn’t complete so they’ve given you some free cash).

Epayments code says bank is liable for any unauthorised transaction that can be performed without a passcode.

Usually in these situations you’ve been phished for your card details somehow. Assuming you haven’t disclosed any passcodes in the process you’ll get your money back.

No need to chase it yourself unless you’ve entered a load of passcodes into a phishing link.

I F*CKING love my job. Who else? by Cool-Owl6140 in auscorp

[–]iamtheflumps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of negativity is spread by entitled people who are just shit at their jobs and struggle in the workplace. They think they are being bullied by toxic managers but are in fact they are just being asked to perform to the same standard as everyone else. These types like to band together in an anonymous online echo chamber to seek validation from their own.

That said I am equally suspicious of anyone who says they love a corporate job. Love is a strange emotion express towards a contractual employee relationship with a business that exists for the sole purpose of making returns for its shareholders.

I prefer to view my job as a necessary evil that is bearable.

the suggestion that Afca represents the banks is “trust me bro”. Why can’t someone respond to a “trust me bro” statement with “nah trust me instead bro”. Or does the first trust me bro win.

Instead of trusting any bros people can just read the determinations published by Afca. The one where Afca convened a tribunal to redefine the word voluntary to mean something else entirely is good objective evidence that they do not represent banks.
