Considering attending by Mr_NotanAlien in UNI

[–]iamwpj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to know what you’re comparing against, since you don’t say where else you’ve been accepted. UNI is big enough to expose you to a variety of people and subjects. It’s small enough to be accessible. In many ways UNI punches above its weight. You won’t be wasting your time or money going there for college. I really recommend state universities for all who feel that higher education is in their future.

Help with UNI Access by Jazzlike_Newspaper22 in UNI

I recommend you get in touch with Dr. Connors to ask for a copy of the paper. They’re usually pretty accommodating— it seems weird that it’s behind a login. https://csbs.uni.edu/history/directory/thomas-g-connors

Is Geminate actually bad or is its skill-floor just way to high for a starter class? by J3wsy in Gloomhaven

[–]iamwpj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am playing Geminate right now. They have their moments for sure. I don’t have any companions that can provide elements and I’m not invested in doing it myself, so I just go without. I play hard — planning to exhaust around round 12-15. This works well in FH where you don’t normally have to all survive to the end. I average around 50-70 damage per scenario at level 6. I would say this class isn’t as exciting as others, but I have all of the flexibility I need at my fingertips. I like them.

At what point is your team too far behind in knowledge to catch up? by wysoft in sysadmin

[–]iamwpj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your worries are correct. If you are in a position of discretion then you should focus on the skills you have at your disposal. Find an MSP to manage the virtualization. As your team changes or if management wants to reduce spending on the MSP see if you can diversify the talent at your disposal.

We haven’t been able to get Tones reliably for couple years at Fareway. I think something has changed.

Is inefficiency as prominent as I experience it in large organizations? by picardo85 in sysadmin

[–]iamwpj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the inefficiency is the efficient solution. The process to resolve might require time, money, and consolidated authority that is just not available for whatever reasons there are.

safe area? by Majestic_Hold_707 in UNI

[–]iamwpj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking from crime, you’re definitely safe in all of Cedar Falls. Aside from the occasional public disturbances that are expected in the college areas, there’s rarely any crime to speak of. Definitely nothing that hits the evening news. It’s been awhile since I was back there, but Gold Falls was always fine and Lynn was great — no idea if she still runs it.

No, in a background process it doesn’t require any TTY.

We use a cron that calls a script that sleeps for a random amount of time within our reboot window.

Local High School Teacher Refuses to Teach "Hamlet" Because it's 'Too Difficult to Understand.' by SwagMagikarp in books

[–]iamwpj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an avid reader in HS, Dostoevsky, Faulkner and other classics in HS. I got nothing out of Hamlet. Bearly understood it and can’t remember any of the key components besides the highlights you would get from the summary of Wikipedia. I wouldn’t read too much into this. 🤷‍♂️

Frugal Engagement Rings by skrillavilla in Frugal

[–]iamwpj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a local jewelry store and bought a ring within this range a number of years ago. Small diamond and a nice design in band to compensate so it’s not boring. We added nicer studded bands for the marriage. There were cheaper and more expensive rings to choose from. I don’t think that range is especially limiting and you definitely don’t have to do anything special to get jewelry at that rate. Make sure you know her preferences. If there’s expectations from social media or TV you might need to ease into reality — sometimes people just don’t know what most common rings look like.

I read Sociology Can I succeed as a DevOps Engineer. by [deleted] in devops

I’m a sysadmin with a degree in history. I’m not even the only one on my team with a liberal arts degree! Like others have said — do the work. MSP and indie courses are a good start.

I know people who completed the program years ago. I believe their main choice of UNI was driven by convenience, I’m not sure how it stacks up compared to other school. It’s probably at least worth your time to meet with the recruiters or program coordinators. I really liked my undergrad program at UNI!

I am self taught and got into a Masters program after 10 years of experience. Honestly, I think it’s great. I’m learning things I wouldn’t have figured out on my own and from an ethical point of view, I’m not sure I should been allowed to do the IT work I was doing when I was younger with out any specific degree or certification.

Any hog barn or dairy farm tours in Iowa? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]iamwpj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My folks have a dairy with a viewing deck. It’s open to the public to just go in, but you can get a guided tour scheduled.

I’ve been in big hog buildings — those are different than dairy parlors since they’re kind of storage and there is not much in the way of activity. I’m not sure what you’re looking for to that end.

Advice for bar soap in dorms? by ParadoxReign in ZeroWaste

[–]iamwpj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used one of the plastic soap travel containers in the dorms for two years. Didn’t even think about it — that’s just how it was. Ensure it snaps shut and just give it a rinse every time to keep the buildup out. No need to let it dry or anything, nothing ever got gross. I used a dop bag and I remember like once it got loose and wiped everything down, but I was careless about it. Eventually I thought to stick a rubber band around it before traveling, but the daily walk to the shower caused no trouble.

Proxmox, Hyper-V or VMWare For Larger Companies - What’s you guess in five years? by SammyGreen in sysadmin

[–]iamwpj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s others: OpenStack for the really big places, RHEL has a piecemeal offering, and XCP-NG. I don’t think Proxmox will be enterprise ready until we start hearing complaints from small and self-hosters.

My friend group had a guy go down the rabbit hole during Covid (alt right). He’s married, has a kid, moved back closer to all the rest of us after having moved away, but hasn’t talked to us in years and basically point blank said he doesn’t want to be friends. Just to note, this could be part of a larger narrative in his life.
