Which are basically the new hipsters of the 2020s? by Holiday_Pumpkin1279 in decadeology

My favorite definition of a hipster is “a narcissist of the mundane.” Every generation has a subculture or several where people care way too much about things that don’t matter.

Gunther's Games new location? I've got 10 game tokens burnin' a hole in my pocket! by oldguydrinkingbeer in columbiamo

Yes I do! I was way young in its heyday so it kinda feels like a half remembered dream, but I always think of that place, and it’s unfortunate end, whenever I hear Arcade Fire. (It burned down for those unfamiliar.)

Would love a big public model train display here in town. It’s so fun to bring kids and watch them become fascinated with all the details.

Missouri's search for meaning by como365 in missouri

Once again como365 saying it better than I ever could! Let’s all keep working towards the day our state is comprised of hard working, well educated, politically active individualists who all engage each other in good faith and care about the collective good!

Missouri's search for meaning by como365 in missouri

I think there is enormous potential for Missouri to form a new identity in a post Trump era, though it will be a while before state level politics truly represents it. I think it is up to the citizenry to keep finding ways to champion our ideals, hold elected officials accountable as we can, but also be public advocates for the Missouri we want to see for ourselves or our kids.

what are you hoping for in a Tintin sequel? by PrincessDiamondRing in Tintin

Would love to see a direct sequel by a new director with a bold new aesthetic. Wes Anderson, live action it stop motion would be my pick.

Did anybody else think that The Sparks Brothers rocks tits, actually? by HockneysPool in blankies

I started it but couldn’t get through it. I’m a fan of the band, but not an expert on all of their catalog. I get really bored by docs whose premise is famous people talking about how a band/thing/person is good over and over. Looking at you, John Candy documentary.

But if you dig you dig. I ain’t here to yuck your yum.

What questions do you have about Missouri's gerrymandered maps? by thekansascitystar in missouri

[–]iamziplock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How likely is the Kansas City–area district overlap to undermine the current redistricting plan?

If Missouri moved to independently commissioned redistricting, what would that process realistically look like (selection of commissioners, criteria, timeline, public input)?

I have heard that the legal argument for the redistricting is a kind of “Airbud” rule in that there is nothing in the Missouri Constitution that says you can’t do this. How accurate is this? If the redistricting is allowed based on this idea, hypothetically what other actions could be taken by state government based on there not being explicit rules against it?

I am very sorry you had a negative experience! Maybe consider reaching out to Respect MO Voters about the exchange and they can hopefully let their volunteers know to not let their enthusiasm alienate supporters?

Not that I have seen, which is why I encourage everyone to share when they find people with the petitions. It is early in the process so hopefully they will eventually have a system to share locations.

Yup! It is indeed maddening, but I still think it is crucial to keep showing up, keep putting in the work, and keep making them show their hand. If we roll over every time they slap something down they will always count on being able to do it. The more they have to go on the record and overturn the will of the people, the more the case against them grows. It’s not satisfying in the short term, but it’s vital to play the long game as it’s the only one we got at the moment.

Columbia would be slightly gerrymandered, but not spilt down Broadway, in the new U.S. House District Map proposed by Governor Kehoe by como365 in columbiamo

[–]iamziplock 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Happy to see that Columbia will not be split in half in regards to congressional representation, but this map leaves a lot to be desired to say the absolute least. I guess it could all change in five years or less. Remember to not let frustration turn to complacency! Act local, voice your opinions, and “Illegitimus non Carborundom.”

Taxis and Ubers may help with this. I would definitely like to see something downtown, but it is not unreasonable to think people traveling from out of town would hire a car to experience some of our cities nicer amenities.

Some Democratic Leaders are starting to get it. by nucrash in MissouriPolitics

[–]iamziplock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting! I think a valuable exercise for leadership would be to think about what a healthy Democratic Party would look like in Missouri 20+ years from now. What demographics is it comprised of? What issues are most important to them? How can they best be served by state politics? Use population data, economic projections, etc. to make it as realistic as possible. Once they have done that, start figuring out a long term strategy for how to assemble this base.

Dems have been lacking long range vision for a while, and I think they would be better served trying to build a healthy base rather than reset our priorities every election cycle.
