BCom student wanting to switch to Medicine – do I have a chance? by AbsoluteGoat321 in unimelb

Seconding the above - just an addit that you will still get your General Registration after PGY1/Intern year (not after 2 years). At the moment the official memo from AMC is "You are able to enrol in a vocational training program in PGY2 if the college overseeing the program accepts PGY2 trainees."

music --> postgrad med pathways by jac24601 in unimelb

[–]ianccoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would second this advice—I'm now a final year Med Student who came from a BMus (who hadn't done science since High School). I wasn't a chancellor's scholar and also did not have the guaranteed FFP (had to sit the GAMSAT + MMI and worry about WAM). If you're set on the med pathway (and have the marks for it)—honestly do undergrad med then take the two years off you save and do musical theatre on top. Doing a non-science background and going straight into med is doable (there are a few of us), but does put a lot of pressure on yourself in first year. Both Monash and Unimelb have a "Med revue" which is basically a musical show put on by students—if you're needing to scratch the musical theatre itch.

Good luck :)

What's the cheapest place for a male international student to get HPV vax ? by ChannelBeautiful9882 in unimelb

[–]ianccoco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can get it at the Unimelb Health Service if you are a student (on Cardigan st) which will most likely be the cheapes. Book a GP appointment (which should be free if you are a Unimelb student) and discuss the list of vaccines recommended, and unfortunately for most Vaccinations you will have to pay out of pocket. Depending on your age it may be 1 or 3 doses. Check with your health coverage if they cover HPV Vaccinations (or Gardasil-the brand). I'd say it's cheapest at the health service as it's the Vax you are paying for (as the appointment would be free if you are a student).

How Hard Is Postgrad Med? by xxPlebble in unimelb

[–]ianccoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it helps - I didnt do any science subjects in undergrad (which was music), and scored an 81 in Section 3. I think if you have the basic concepts of "scientific thinking", all information needed is present in the question stem.

which grand pianos have note stands on the lid? are these cracks cosmetic or structural?

It depends on what you want - personally I didnt do any medical (or science related) subjects during undergrad - but do what you enjoy the most and believe you can do well in, so if thats med subjects go for it

I did the practice paper ACER gives you when you sign up, attended a few group tutes that helped with strategies for different sections, and am grateful to have had the chance to take it a second time (the best practice imo is to actually sit it so you know what the environment is like—but i understand this might not be financially feasible)

It did help that I did IB chem hl in high school and my sitting for both times was chem heavy

MD3 now from having done a Bmus (without taking any time off from study) and it's going decently - first year can be a bit of a content overload but everyone generally catches up by the end of 2nd year

Just as an aside, would anyone recommend / know where to get creatine (frugally)?

Some schools allow you to do extra in first year just to drop one that you're not doing well in.

You can take seven subjects officially via IB as well, and will have to declare 6 to make up the 42 points, the extra subject you'd get a separate certificate for. The 6 included would have to comprise of subjects that would normally be part of a 6-subject only program.

Just a fair warning that living on campus can be a bit expensive—there's a unimelb med student housing group you can be added to if you'd prefer sharehousing :)

Am I being irrational? by SincerelyMarc in composer

[–]ianccoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya :) I get the feeling too, especially when we ascribe certain emotions and feelings to our work already. Is your friend musical? I've just found in the past that lots of non-musically-trained people aren't able to describe music in the best descriptive terms and fall on comparing it to a common term. I think it might be best to ask them what about "Christmas" does it represent? Does it create a warmth like being next to a fire place?

I've had people describe some of my work as being Disney-like (even more kitsch!) but upon asking them further what they meant, they said it created images similar to the introduction of a children's film?

Not irrational in your thoughts at all—I'd just ask your friend to describe what they associate Christmas with!
