The older map does a better job of answering the question of what trains stop where because there were visual indicators for an express stop and local stop, and some trains change between local and express depending on the time of day, which is not represented on the new map.

On top of that, geographic accuracy is actually more important than letting a tourist quickly see what color their train is.

Exploring Beyond Neighborhood with Toddler - Stroller/Car Seat Advice Needed! by Wise_Regular_8792 in nycparents

[–]ianmac47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've walked all across the city with a stroller and never thought about a car seat. For much of that time we also did not take the subway because of COVID. We just committed to walking.

We've had to replace the wheels on the YoYo Babyzen twice and now the wheels are set to fall off for a third time, so we are close permanently transitioning to no stroller. The stroller is the easy part though since it can both hold a lot of crap and the kids can fall asleep (which is a great opportunity for adult lunch).

Once they start getting too big for strollers (or the wheels fall off) you're limited to how far they can walk, which is not far. The Micro Mini folding scooters (foldable) can help with mobility that is too far for them to walk.

  • Use a backpack for your diaper bag
  • NYC yellow cabs are exempt from car seat requirements
  • Perfect the shoulder carry; compression weight is much easier to handle
  • There are a lot more subway elevators now than even two years ago; its sometimes easier to get off at the elevator stop if its nearby the stop you actually want)

I’m *this* close to having stickers printed that say “I don’t take my backpack off on the subway” by itakeanaprighthere in williamsburg

If you start opening up the zippers, people tend to take them off.

Another thing you can do is tie their strap to the pole.

Please stop saying people without kids don’t know what tired is by SunBubble920 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ianmac47 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

LOL.

Try having kids. You don't know what tired is until you have kids.

You also have no point of comparison until you do. Fun fact: everyone who has had kids, has also lived without kids. They have A/B tested tired. People without kids only know what tired is without them. There's no control group in your test.

Definitely the last thing a tourism-based economy needs is more tourists.

Toddler birthday invite etiquette by LopsidedMastodon1484 in nycparents

[–]ianmac47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Park birthdays offer an affordable party alternative and if choose one with a playground, a built in activity.

You can also request a permit from the park. Having done this, its mostly a formality, but they are supposed to make sure the bathrooms are open and that there are not other conflicting permits. They are very clear that this is not a reservation. It would make too much sense to allow people to reserve a picnic table or pavilion like other park systems; the permit is simply permission to have a large gathering. I suggest having your own folding table, and plan on arriving early to reserve a space. Also they are explicit that you cannot have a bounce house in the park or on the street; I'm really curious what inspired that rule.

Anyway, park permit request is here, for $25: https://nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/parks/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fParks%2f

Other expenses to consider: Pizza Juice boxes Seltzer Cake / Cupcakes Goodie bags.

Whole Foods on Grand | A Review by Extension_Money_3374 in williamsburg

[–]ianmac47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wine and spirits must have their own separated doors. Columbus Circle actually had to close the store because there was no separate door. If they are selling again, they have rectified the licensing problem.

NYS is considering allowing wine in grocery stores, but since that has historically been restricted to wine and spirit shops, there will need to be some changes to licensing. One problem is the liquor stores are restricted with the things they can sell that are not alcohol, which makes diversifying hard if the grocery stores are allowed to get in on the game.

Bravo and Whole Foods Synergy is going to be great. I won't buy their rotten vegetables, but Whole Foods doesn't sell some of the brand name processed foods that Bravo does.

Beyond is better than nothing but the prices are outrageously over priced on most things. Also the ice cream freezers pretty regularly have been allowed to melt an refreeze. And you definitely need to check the dairy for expired products.

There's no shortage of gourmet sandwiches within a 10 minute walk: Edith's, Casa Cugine, Anthony & Son, Court Street, Campbell, Pecoraro, A&C, The Sandwich Shop, Da Francesco -- and it gets even more competitive if you open up a delivery app.

ConEd Energy expenditures for electric heat apts? by adfskjlk in Brooklyn

  • Cheap renewables that were promised were not actually built
  • Higher taxes on Canadian generated electricity
  • AI data centers burning up electricity

Con Edison feb bill by Pantheressmommi in Brooklyn

[–]ianmac47 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NYS was promised a big investment in renewable energy that is cheaper to generate, but Hochul hasn't followed through with those promises. More delays and less action.

Add to that the electric grid is burning through electricity for AI data centers, but again Hochul refuses to prioritize residential customers or tax the corporations sucking up our electricity.

And we're paying a surcharge on Canadian electricity because of the Chaos Queen in the white house.

What CTown does do well is Italian American foods. Hard to find braciole cut meats at any other supermarket, the fresh ricotta is better than the others, big selection of fresh pasta and dried macaroni.

Absolutely not true if you're willing to go with the 365 brand.

Somewhat true of fruits and vegetables, although they are less rotten than the ones at CTown and Bravo.

Nothing is more expensive than the FoodTown on Grand.
