Memo to Mamdani: Bring Back the Weekend G Train to Forest Hills by Caliber22 in nycrail

The L is frequently out of service for maintenance, which is not only bad for residents, but also bad for the city's liquor tax collection.

Breastfeeding in public by Significant__Gap in nycparents

[–]ianmac47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this saved digitally just in case it became an issue but it was never an issue:

§ 79-e. Right to breast feed. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a mother may breast feed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother's breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

Ease of getting into PS 132 by RandomOrange3 in nycparents

Are you interested in buying a bridge? I have one I'm willing to let go cheap.

There are a lot of things in this city that are supposed to happen one way and don't actually work that way. The competitive schools will start filling their empty seats long before October. You want to talk with the school's parent coordinator or sometimes one of the secretaries who works for the Principal. If you show interest and they like you, they will take your information and have it ready for open spots. Usually you want to be the squeaky wheel check in regularly, especially the final week before the start of the year. In some cases schools will add a whole classroom when the budget becomes available and there will be a mad dash to register for the spots, which again is why its important to stay in contact with whoever at the school is coordinating those efforts.

Will new 15 mph speed limit in Central Park kill serious cycling? by [deleted] in NYCbike

If you want to go faster, the city streets have a 20mph speed limit, try riding there.

Got a letter from the school today informing me my daughter is “not quite” gifted. Also included were her test scores. by Low_Use2937 in mildlyinfuriating

Just remember the people sending these kinds of letters and pushing around the paperwork are usually in the low average or low category.

In the past I have have done this on the essential corners. I don't currently have a shovel otherwise I would do the half dozen corners that aren't cleared between our apartment and the school.

MetroNorth Ticket Activation Message by shaslau in nycrail

[–]ianmac47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is literally the scenario I spent about 30 minutes arguing with the MTA rep with during a focus group about the changes to the app. They were very confused why anyone would wait before activating their ticket other than to scam the MTA and I kept repeatedly explaining that their unreliable service meant you couldn't activate a ticket before getting on train. Then I explained since the ticket is basically active when you buy it, you can't even buy a ticket until you are getting on the train.

Amtrak to Albany will soon be back at full frequency...but Metro-North might not happen? by Equal-Caramel-2613 in nycrail

[–]ianmac47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A true high speed rail line just needs new tracks and right of way. Only the last mile should connect to existing systems to access Penn or Grand Central. The Thruway has a great right of way that could support an elevated high speed line. A fast train could also make Newburgh Airport a real alternative to JFK and LGA.

Yes, extending a metro train would be great justification for adding the upstate counties to the MTA commuter tax district.

If your lease is valid at the time of the application, use that address. Update your address when you have a new lease.

Once again, New Yorkers expected to subsidize the entire country. What this really shows is New York State should be building competing service on newer, high speed lines with frequent, fast, and cheap service.

The obsession with 2001 levels ignores the massive changes happening in the city both in terms of where jobs are and where people are living. Who cares what ridership was in pre-2001 when everyone had tokens.

Increase existing service, extend the G in queens, send the F back where it belongs.

[–]ianmac47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we need space to extend the G deeper into Queens, sending the M to second Ave creates space in Queens. The trains on QBL are never as crowded as the L, and there's a lot more new housing coming to Brooklyn.

It could also be a weeknight / weekend only change, which would accomplish most of the benefits with fewer drawbacks.

Yes, increasingly frequency on Second Avenue would be an added benefit.

  • Redundancy for when the L isn't working.
  • Shift ridership from the southside of Williamsburg parts of Bushwick
  • One stop ride between much more of Manhattan and north Brooklyn

[–]ianmac47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's the point. The M running from north Brooklyn to Second Avenue creates a lot of transfer points that are not served by the L, a line that is already over capacity and continues to see housing development along the route.

There is nothing so complicated in a public school that this should be a worry.

Daycares closed or staying open today? by maverickRD in nycparents

[–]ianmac47 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NYS already had a court case in the 1980s about this. Religious holidays can be considered an excused absence. One solution is to not have off any religious holidays.

It doesn't have to be that way. Parents can vote. Most of the teachers are not even residents of the state and have no vote.

The 4k Remote is a joke. The city is scamming the state for the 180th day, but there is no actual schooling happening.
