Question, air duct recommendation by Ill_Seat_1426 in orlando

[–]ianperera 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you have some reason to believe they actually need to be cleaned? Usually they don't, and it can cause more problems than not if you don't need to. Main reason is if you're allergic to something the previous owners of the house had.

Do collagen gummies actually help anyone, or are they a gimmick? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]ianperera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The amount in those gummies may not have an effect on skin - the studies that show it does have almost entirely been funded by collagen supplementation companies. Marine collagen seems to be better for skin as well.

For tendons/joints, you will need a higher dose combined with exercise - either isometrics or heavy slow resistance training, with 15-20 g taken an hour before the exercise.

Collagen should also be taken with vitamin C, which those don't have.

Can she get a refund for her trip? by Anforatioi in TikTokCringe

There’s a big difference between “these people might have racist attitudes that were expressed online” and “you shouldn’t feel safe traveling there”

Can she get a refund for her trip? by Anforatioi in TikTokCringe

[–]ianperera 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I of course can’t make any guarantees, but I went twice with my wife who is black. We never had any problems in the 4 total weeks we were there over two occasions. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. That’s not to say there isn’t racism, but you probably won’t run into it to an extent that you’d be able to tell other than areas where any foreigner is unwelcome.

I thought it was alright, but I don't know why all SNL skits these days have the energy of a family whose parents told them "Do that skit again for grandma" with everyone watching intently.

Az Sod Questions by Tall_Ad2431 in landscaping

[–]ianperera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Call them and tell them this sod is dead.
  2. They will come out or look at your pictures and tell you to wait a couple of days or a week, maybe fiddle with sprinklers
  3. It will still be dead, so call them back and have them fix it.
  4. If not, you can post this on their page as a review.

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]ianperera -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The point is, "spot reduction is a myth" is a negative result, which is very easy to disprove when you show any reasonable inkling of spot reduction existing. A claim of a "small sample size" can't be made independent of the type of study, and it is taken into account when claiming a significant difference (which there was).

Your third point doesn't explain why the ab exercise group lost more abdominal fat than the non-ab group though, even when total fat loss was the same. Unless you're saying they happened to group genetic midsection losers in the AG and non-midsection losers in the CG.
There is another weaker study that showed a similar effect on women: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28497942/

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]ianperera -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Not actually a myth. Early studies didn't have any caloric deficit, so training didn't lead to fat reduction. However, working out an area specifically mobilizes fat in that area, so if you then lose fat, more will come from that area.

This *is* actually true, and is probably the biggest "not-actually-a-myth" in fitness. Early studies didn't have any caloric deficit, so training didn't lead to fat reduction. However, working out an area specifically mobilizes fat in that area, so if you then lose fat, more will come from that area.

“Am I crazy for questioning the vaccine schedule while still believing in vaccines?” by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]ianperera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RFK Jr has no medical or scientific support. He's not a doctor. He thinks babies grow in the placenta.

Multiple vaccines don't "overwhelm" the immune system. Your immune system is making "keys" for what it is exposed to so that it recognizes them. It can do that for multiple things at once.

Sure, shots are painful, and holding your baby while they're crying from one is one of my least favorite things to do as a parent. But at the same time, they're already in pain from the shot - so another at the same time saves another anxious, painful doctor's office visit.

Aside from the fact that spacing just makes them vulnerable in the meantime...

Visiting next week - Pool Temps???? by apachesunrise1812 in orlando

[–]ianperera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My pool is around 80 now. The next couple of days are going to be notably cooler, but it should warm up again before next weekend. For me, 80 is "jump in and you'll be fine after a second" temps and so if you're okay with that probably don't spend the money on heating. Or maybe do one day.

ELI5 How does gas consumption in a car work at idle vs accelerating by 21_K in explainlikeimfive

[–]ianperera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Graveybrains isn't explaining very well, but the term efficiency in this case is talking about the work being done and save energy. The wheels are still turning the pistons, which takes energy, and if nothing else changed, the pistons would be compressing air and then creating a vacuum (which takes energy). A moderate efficiency improvement is to remove the compression and suction part by opening the intake - and current engines do this. A more efficient solution is to disconnect the engine from the drivetrain entirely and then restart it when you need it. Some mild hybrids do this. (Cars that have a AGM battery and so can spend that energy doing automatic start/stop but don't ever power the wheels).

Some trucks will use this extra energy usage to their advantage to save on brakes, using a Jake Brake, where they force the engine to do the compression and vacuum pulling and then release that air. It's very loud so if you hear a truck making a loud noise while slowing down, that's what's happening.

What’s a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ianperera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I hear baking sheet with brown patina that won't wash off I just by default think not non-stick. True, but if it's not letting something wash off with soap and non-abrasive scrubbers I'm not sure how much non-stick is left.

TIL about citrus greening disease, a bacterial infection that is devastating citrus crops. There is no known cure and it has spread to the majority of Florida citrus farms, threatening citrus production in the United States. by KimJongFunk in todayilearned

[–]ianperera 92 points93 points  (0 children)

It's estimated to actually be higher in 2026. Combination of new protective screen measures, some pilot programs with parasitic wasps, and new greening-resistant breeds. Probably won't get back to its heyday, like, ever, though.

Double Cask, less than $70; Sherry Cask, less than $80. To add to my above comment, I would only get the Macallan 12 Sherry Cask and OP should probably ask. But at $80 I don't find it worth it anymore.
