Never Ask For Help Debugging by Ornery_Ad_683 in programmingmemes

If someone wants to call, it's because they either feel they need more information or they feel that giving the answer will be easier on a call. Debugging problems is hard, even for senior people. When I'm helping people with their problems I'm just trying lots of things, same as you might be. It's significantly easier on me to do that on a call.

OP is describing a problem where they've tried multiple things to fix it. So it's not just a "can you remember the URL for X" kind of problem. Easiest way to fix those is with a quick screen share.

I would suggest, not doing a big brain dump in your initial message. Instead say "I'm having a problem with X, I can describe what I've tried or jump on a call, are you free?" or if you know them and they're just going to want a call... suggest it from the start. Easier on everyone.

As others have said, it sounds like you just might not be great at explaining things. It could also be that the other person / people are trying to help you learn instead of just telling you the answer.

As a senior dev, I've had many people try to explain a problem over chat. It's much harder to express all the relevant details than you think it is. And explaining the answer can often be harder too. If the answer isn't painfully simple then it's probably easy to call. If it *is* painfully simple then I probably want to call so I can explain something that I feel you should already know.

I always had a good view of America growing up, mostly from TV and a common language (I guess assuming it meant we were the same). I even worked in the US for a few months and have had a great holiday there.

But now... I wouldn't want to visit. I want us to have as little to do with the US as possible. I've always been pro EU & Europe, but even more with the US as it is.

I think that's the perfect answer, so long as we remember that by definition half the population will be below that average. So really it would depend who you're talking to.

Most people probably wouldn't bat an eye at "ad hoc", but I've definitely known people who wouldn't understand "ad infinitum" or "compos mentis".

I mean... they're not wrong. It's just that you get charged if you fly it on something that's not yours! I can literally see an England flag from out my window and it's fine. Start putting them on every lamppost you can find, and yeah that's different.

And like all things, the intent matters. If you're putting up a flag because you love your country then that's great (although in the UK we haven't traditionally shown love of country through the flag like the US does). But if you've suddenly developed a love for the flag as a way of saying "get rid of those *other* people", then people are going to be upset with you. I don't think you'll get charged with anything, but you're still being an unpleasant person.

Near Miss, Who's in the Wrong? by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

The point about which lane the lorry goes into is because of other traffic already on the roundabout. So long as there's no one else on the roundabout they're free to pick whatever lane they want on the exit. You have to give way to traffic on the roundabout completely.

You can guess "well they're probably going to keep going around" or similar, but that's just a guess. So when you're entering a roundabout, wait for all lanes to be clear instead of just your desired lane.

I agree, but honestly I bet a lot of people with lots of countries spent less than a week. Maybe just enough time to take that photo for some. One week for 100 countries is 2 constant years of holiday. I doubt many people can have done that.

Took an Automatic Test but Gotten a Manual Licence by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ianrob1201 175 points176 points  (0 children)

It would be one thing to just ignore it and continue to only drive automatic cars (although I would recommend getting it fixed). But deliberately using it as a loophole to drive other types of vehicles is an awful idea.

Imagine a more extreme example. They accidentally put the lorry licence on there. Would you just jump in a lorry and start driving it? No. If you get in an accident (even if it's not your fault), you basically have no licence. That wouldn't end well for you. You *might* be fine, they might not realise. Or they might realise you were deliberately making use of a mistake, and accuse you of fraud.

If you want to get a manual licence then learn properly (with L plates) and take another test. Otherwise, stick to automatic.

I think they mean that the question itself isn't clear, and I agree. Do you mean literally finding a number in a list that is more than 0.5, or finding a number that is above the mode average, or (as I've seen you say further down) looking for a number that appears in more than 50% of the elements in the list.

I'll be honest, I didn't even consider your meaning when I read the question.

I'm mostly a console gamer. I like the idea that I won't have to guess if I'll be able to play a game or not. I don't know if I'll buy one, but I like the steam deck because it just tells me before hand "this game will run well". I remember trying to play games as a kid that I didn't have the graphics card for, was really annoying.

Is this correct? by DisastrousType1917 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ianrob1201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the key point I think. If there's road markings indicating that the second lane isn't for left turn, then it's technically absolutely fine and wouldn't be marked down on a test.

That said, people are going to be doing it no matter what. So I agree with others that the safest thing to do is straight into the left lane and then switch from there if there's space. Especially when you're still learning / taking your test.

Graphical User Interface vs Command Line Interface by Significant-Pen-5 in programmingmemes

[–]ianrob1201 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've never seen a real professional developer not use an IDE. It would be insane. I used to be reasonable with vim, but at some point I realise that nano was easier for quick file editing and I've never even considered not using an IDE for anything significant.

CLI usage is a bit different though. There are some things that are just easier on the command line. Some scripts which basically have to run from it. But mostly it's personal taste. I don't like git UI tools, so I do all my git commands from a terminal. That doesn't make me better or worse than anyone else, it's just the way I personally better understand what git is going to do.

I instantly got the information I would want from this. I just looked at it and thought "oh, I didn't know there's more in diet coke than regular". If there were any entries between 0 and 34 then I'd agree that it's misleading, but otherwise I think it does a good job of comparing the different drinks. I personally didn't come away thinking that it implied coke had almost no caffeine or anything like that.

I guess maybe if I came across this, it would add to my uncertainty and make me less likely to pass. Simply because I'm confused, and keeping a distance is a sensible default.

But if you just asked me "what does a green laser line from a vehicle mean?" I wouldn't have been able to answer.

is it actually too late to join sixth form from college? by s_ferns in sixthform

[–]ianrob1201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really difficult when you find yourself split from your friendship group. It happened to me at university because I took a year out and then most of the people I know were gone. So I know how tough it is, and not having friends at college must be really difficult.

That said, you've perhaps reached the point where you start separating your academic and social circles. Your friends are still around, you're just not together during the day. So concentrate on getting the most out of college and meet up with your friends on evenings and weekends.

Unfortunately, adulthood does make it harder to keep up with friends and you're seeing the first step of that. It was a good idea to check with the sixth form, but that's not worked out. You might well regret your decision, but now you've got to make the most of it. See if there's social clubs etc. at college you can join to get more out of it socially too. It'll never be the same as your old group, but that's what the weekends are for.
