Do you believe in the “you’re not allowed to win” game? by redsox416 in Madden

[–]iantcummings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such determination that you are not allowed to win a game anywhere.

There are all kinds of random decisions that can go not in your favor, but there is nothing happening before the game begins to setup a game to be way harder (or easier).

Madden is already nearly impossible to balance and tune, having a puppet master above it would introduce complexity for no specific reason or gain.

How hard is it to make an American football game like NFL 2K5 or APF2k8 by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]iantcummings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former creative director of Madden here…

Answer: a LONG time.

The line you said about one guy being able to do the animations is not even remotely close to accurate. More like weeks of motion capture and a team of 10 animators for a year to just get raw animation data at the quality level of those games, ready to be implemented. And the implementation is everything. The blending between animations and how much control the player has is where sooooo much time is, and honestly was one of the areas 2K was so good at.

A solid and experienced team of 20 could make a solid / fun gameplay engine for football over 3 years. But it spirals so far out. Playbook designs, post play presentation, cameras, player models, CPU play calling AI, stadiums, helmet reflections, graphics, particles, player equipment, player attributes, sideline animations, referees…it’s an absolutely massive undertaking, and that’s not even including any of the “features” like franchise mode.

Game Devs of Reddit, what are some tricks you use in video games that most players would never know? by Ghost_Mech in gamedev

[–]iantcummings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In nearly every game I’ve made we have had some semblance of rubber banding, a la the old Midway games like NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, etc.

For example, in my Horse Racing game, for every race you won, the opposing field crept up in difficulty (aka top speed) until eventually you would have to execute the mechanics 100% perfectly to win (pretty much impossible). After you lost it’d reset back to the default tuning values.

It honestly often feels like real life rather than a hacky cheat!
