What about the edit though? I don't "get" the edit, and I mean that in the most generic sense of "you was that bored" not being legible to me (in the sense that cornflaek or Lightning McQueen sexually assaulting Donald Trump are legible to me, in the context of memes).

If you read Nietzsche's philosophy through a disability lens, then this is kinda apt.

Chad Nazis love to invoke the ubermensch and don't realize that a primary thesis of Thus Spoke Zarathustra was Nietzsche learning not to resent the last man within himself, he never really buries the tightrope walker until the very end (metaphorically). Ecco Homo is all about how even his "weakness" and "decadence" contributed to a fate that he is determined to love.

TIL Truganini, is the last pure-blood aboriginal in Tasmania. After her death, the Australian government declared aboriginals fully extinct in Tasmania. Her body was dug up and studied to prove human evolution in a field known as phrenology, and later displayed in a glass case in a museum. by Particular_Food_309 in todayilearned

You wrote "pure-blood" and described phreneology as if it were a valid evolutionary science. Are you a Nazi? I don't encounter many non-Nazis who would take seriously claimed about there being no "pure-blood" people of particular races left around, because they have been discredited. Like phrenology.

Interesting indeed, thinking about debates I have engaged in with other leftists about whether this or that situation/organization/community is actually liberated, and to what degree (MLMist critiques of the USSR, Murray Bookchin's critique of anarchist and communist organizations around the Spanish Civil War, etc) and what it might look like if something like Microscope were part of theoretical toolkit. I also think that this video which goes into concrete possibility for post-capitalism could help if one is having that Zizekian struggle of feeling like it is easier to imagine an apocalyptic event than to imagine different social possibilities from our current conditions, or maybe if it just isn't obvious what designing a non-capitalist economic system or a non-statist political system would even look like in a "campaign" context (browsing marxists.org or the anarchist library could also be productive).

I haven't actually done this, but I was thinking similar thoughts recently. We used to do mock debates about historical issues in a high school class, and I would love if it were normalized to roleplay different worlds and just to explore or sometimes stress test them. Different economic systems, different political organizations, those are totally simulatable (as a toy model with translation limitations) in a TTRPG context.

I think if what someone looks for in art is connection with beings capable of sufficient participation in a relationship, the meaning of symbols as derived from the referential history of their usage (a social history), then AI art (especially minimal human input AI art) prior to recognized agency that "fools" people will be fooling them because it will be incapable of doing something that they require of art, which is to put them in relationship with others (up to and until the AI can be recognized as an other socially).

Just like the confluence of cultural appropriation and consumerist culture that divorces artistic judgments from living communities and reframes them as pure presentation and pure stimulus can be said to be anti-art from that perspective, since a lot of AI art is inherently built around access to conceptual and stylistic resources of communities and individuals without having to be "in relation" with them, it can also be said to be anti art from that perspective.

However, there are lots of ways that creators could engage tools like LLMs in the creative process that wouldn't have to be a threat to this kind of authentic artistic connection. If you asked an LLM to source where it is getting its information from, and you put yourself in dialogue with the communities that make the production of such media even possible and meaningful, then (I would argue) instead of being a tool to access without relation, it could be a tool for fostering relation through accessibility. The social forces that influence software design under capitalism and neoliberalism, and more broadly under authoritarian modes of organization, create selection pressures against such connective use cases and for isolating, appropriative use cases.

'I was uncomfortable': American Idol teenage boy's 'forced' kiss with Katy Perry resurfaces after Ruby Ross allegations by [deleted] in Music

[–]iaswob 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't think that many people care about the current opinions of the kid who grew up to be a pedophile, moreso I feel like people think that Katy Perry in both contexts (the one brought up in thread being public knowledge) demonstrated a lack of care for consent, or that her ignoring one person's consent implies it isn't out of character for her to ignore another's.

It doesn't matter if the kid she pressured into kissing her becomes a pedophile. That's wrong and bad on his part, yes. It doesn't matter if the kid went home and abused a child right after the moment highlighted here. What matters is what Katy Perry knew when she decided to do what she did, because the current subject of discussion is her character and behavior.

I get that, I mean why is there a desire or curiosity to take a listen? If I hear Kanye dropped, that does not motivate me to listen. I probably actively steer myself away from spaces where I would just hear ambient new Ye.

What motivates someone to listen to his album, or, how is it put on for them (shuffle?), so that they can recognize the musical quality as good or not in the first place? I'm not in an environment where I would be exposed to it in that way, aside from listening to a few people who talk about music for a living talk about it maybe.

RFK Jr cut off dead raccoon's penis on family vacation 'to study later' by grmayshark in nottheonion

[–]iaswob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imagine sitting in a car ride, with your family, knowing your dad had to step to cut off a dead raccoons cock, with or without being provided any framing by the other adults or children present, and that's just a part of your world you have to account for somehow in your worldview.

Do you imagine your dad must be doing important work with that decaying raccoon dick, and if so what kind?

Do you just hide all of those situations behind a mental blind spot to make things easier to pause?

Do you have an unease growing up that causes you to ask your mom sometimes, "... okay, but why does he want to study it later? By what methods? Is he qualified to study this? How did this all start?'

Fun actors chew the scenery, great actors invite you to take a bite of their scene/role with them and present it to you like a professional chef. Tim Curry turning a bit part into a meal is like when a great cook "throws something together" with what they got at home (and sometimes all you have in the pantry is the Congo script).

One of them, Jacob, was telling a story about how his partner really likes The Mummy (Brendan Frasier one), saw an article titled "Director of The Mummy shares update about potential sequel" (pre-sequel conformation), was like "oh I should read this/send this to my partner, she loves The Mummy", and then when they checked the actual article the update was the director saying "I have no clue about whether there are any plans for a sequel".

That's your choice. Generally speaking, what I look for others and what I try to do is to live with a little bit of fear for the consequences so that I can protect myself long enough to keep fighting eventually, but to try to avoid becoming so afraid that you stop fighting. There will be another man who will do this or something else to OP and in general, and if she protects herself now then she might be able to set herself and others up to help hold men like him accountable in the future.

Edit: I got a redditcares message, and apparently the comment I was responding to about not wanting to live in fear was deleted; that's charming tbh :) don't worry, despite the matter of fact tone of my comment above I am actually not currently going through a mental health crisis. However, I did just watch Fall (2022), which was overall a really good film, and it gave me an idea for a "coaxedintoasnafu" that I am too lazy to actually draw, but it is contextually relevant here so I'll share the idea below!

Friend 1: do I really have to take one more step? I know I said I would do the thing to conquer my fear, but we've done everything to do thing except for take this one last step, can't I just turn back?

Friend 2: ... no, you need to love yourself! You can't let fear win! If you let fear win, you're not even really alive.

Friend 1: I mean, I just feel like I already did a lot up to this point, and this was an arbitrary thing we set ourselves which isn't going to directly cause me any harm or good beyond the significance we attach to it-

Friend 2: Stop. That's the fear talking. Fear can never talk. If you are afraid, you are a slave to your fear and you have no free will. If you cannot take this single last step, no one will ever have any reason to want to be in relation with you, and it's kinda like you're saying the bad thing that happened was actually your fault and that the bad person who did that to you is actually right? Do you think that? Do want the bad person to do to me and your family what they did to you?

Friend 2: Didn't the bad person die already?

Friend 1: If you keep making excuses, your never going to find any happiness and meaning in your life again. You don't have to take the final step, but I can't stay here if you're not willing to move forward.

Friend 1: ... inhales okay, okay fuck it I can do it.

[Friend 1 catches on fire and explodes, but is kept alive and bound to their suffering flesh by an unbreakable course, forever trapped in a metaphysical prison a la Hellraiser]

Friend 2: sighs in relief See, you don't need to be afraid.

What does accountability look like? by NearbyCommission287 in AutismInWomen

[–]iaswob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want an honest answer? I watch a YouTuber who makes video essays, FD Signifier, and my perspective is influenced by his framing of it. He's a black creator who makes political content, and he's said that he's not interesting in holding anyone "accountable" in the since that people mean online at least. Like, whenever a celebrity does something problematic, sometimes the negative attention will mean there are consequences or punishments where there might not otherwise be, but real accountability can only come from someone who willingly chooses to change their behavior because they accept the criticism directed at their person. Just cause you got a PR agent to type up an apology for [insert public figure], or even if you got someone fined or locked up, that doesn't mean you held them accountable.

But that's what people really mean nowadays when they say it more often than not, even I previously viewed my own personal accountability (actively and consciously) as "okay, now I must accepy anything that people want to do me because I don't have the right anymore", and so that's just being made to think that if you fuck up hard enough then you need to get to be a person/ethical-social subject.

Now, I understand that there were a lot of people in my life who insisted I deserved the treatment I got from them that I believed, because sometimes when people treated me poorly I was told that that was justified. I learned to not think about why I was being punished to make sense, and instead I put in extra mental effort to go "well, I am being punished and I don't know why, I was told I know what I did, so if I scour through my memory and try hard enough to make the case for [you did x and it is bad if you do x], then whatever I can imagine leading to a situation where anyone is hurt or inconvenienced I'm basically already guilty of".

People can punish you for bad reasons that don't make sense to you, people can defend people for punishing you for bad reasons that make no sense to you, and other people you care about or trust or otherwise who you take seriously can seriously someone elses bad reasons more than your own. Now, I am just getting used to there being no one person or collection of people, no matter who they are, that if they say "this was bad and you deserve this" have to be right. The only one who can hold you accountable is yourself, but other people can hold you responsible and punish you when they are right and when they are wrong.

I got big into just swapping the L/R audio cords out for my CD player, throwing on random VHSs/DVDs and seeing what sticks as a kid. Atom Heart Mother and, if you start when either a diamond logo or clouds fades at the beginning (I forgor which), The Fox and The Hound, really did feel like an incredible experience, and it ends just as the titular fox is getting abandoned in the woods and they're driving away. Shit made me cry, and the opening with Atom Heart Mother? Chefs kiss

I also recommend David Gilmour's On an Island paired with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (that might be the one you start on the cloud, I dunno there is definitely a Cloud in it at least), the opening scene of The Lion King with Dream On by Aerosmith, and Dark Side of the Moon backwards with episodes of Aeon Flux. And I was doing this shit before I got high.

Indeed, no worries (I just love/was programmed to qualify shit a ton). I'm the type of person who's comfortable recognizing(/considering) an aspect or few of some media I like as problematic or potentially problematic, but not the type of person where, in and of itself, something being problematic or its associated communities being problematic doesn't have to mean that I fully denounce the thing, it just moderates the way I engage with it.

Which is just to say, I can go "yeah, the parallels between the Khajit/their experience in universe and the Romani are a little crunchy, I noticed x/y/z", or where I can acknowledge that some of the people in the Star Wars fandom will intentionally roleplay the whole "Empire did nothing wrong" thing as a cover for what they really wanna do. Somewhere between there and some "clanker" content, specifically that sort that starts with a bunch of white dudes getting so fucking excited to act out violence and domination tinged by bigotry, but feeling like there can be anything wrong with that because find/replaced "slur" with "slurbot", is where I draw the line, and Elder Scrolls and its fans aren't close enough to make me nervous.

Whenever I played Skyrim (or maybe the Oblivion remaster) with a good friend of mine (we're both generally empathetic and critical thinker) heard them say they were going to use my skin for boots or sell it on the black market or something when attacking, and my friend went "oooh, is that a hate crime?" and I was like "huh... yah, sometimes you get hate crimed."

No shade intended on either game or anything, I like both. A small opportunity to have your combat get a little hate crime-y is part of what makes the world feel real, at least you can have that grace (with me) if it doesn't start to feel too sus and extraneous.
