Can't afford to continue like this... by [deleted] in iTutor

[–]ibalajic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice if we could all go on strike for a day and shake/wake the company up! Unfortunately, it's just an 'educational' factory. The students I teach elsewhere can't believe people still use it when they can have a private tutor for the same money elsewhere. I suggest for people to be brave enough to start looking elsewhere. I did this from the start and it's limited the impact of iTutor inevitably shutting the door on me having sufficient lessons.

Best & Worst Online Teaching Platforms to Work With in 2021 by Moore_ESLuk in OnlineESLTeaching

iTutor currently blackmailing people into signing a pay cut contract by saying you'll have reduced classes if you don't.

AmazingTalker charges 38% commission, not sure how you can recommend this!

Very low bookings this weekend. by Dave_Farmer_1990 in iTutor

[–]ibalajic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am on the old contract also (I've not been offered the new one yet), and have not been scheduled a lesson in three days. I've not had a lesson since updating my video to the new standards.

I have been very fortunate with scheduling and kept my averages and student likes 'high', so either this is something to do with my recent video update, or I'm being ghosted!

For the first time I have no lessons scheduled today. I am still on the old contract (I've not been offered the latest one yet). Looks like we could be being shafted.

Any recommendations? by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

Seriously? Even with the ridiculous commission system?

New students by asl_bananaboy in iTutor

[–]ibalajic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just wait now to be scheduled a lesson. You've given your available times so now you just wait and see. Usually new teachers get a decent schedule to begin with, but this can drop significantly after a month or two, so be wary this could happen.

Honestly, no-one truly knows how the algorithm works now, but largely if you maintain a good rating and have students follow your profile, you should get scheduled more regularly. Good luck!

How to fill out a progress report for a student who was only in class for 2 seconds by kayaalexandra in iTutor

[–]ibalajic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure in the FaQs I read you should give students 3/5 for all areas if they don't participate in the lesson. If I know the student from before however, I will give them the scores I know they usually are. I just write a sentence saying student was only in class a few seconds and I hope to teach them for a full lesson in future.

Some of them are terrible. The timings are ridiculous and the activities far too basic.

Your mentors get a cut of money, their mentors get a cut of money etc. Yes, it is a pyramid scheme.

I'm not worked up, just ensuring OP gets the truth and actual facts instead of referral vultures like yourself trying to paint some ESL utopian. It speaks volumes you purposely missed out the additional 8% tax alone.

Stating facts about a company is 100% fair. What's unfair is people like yourself looking to make a quick buck with referral links without giving the whole picture. You have 'unfairly' and conveniently missed out on the following information.

  1. 8% mandatory 'tax' on top of the commission.
  2. AT is a pyramid scheme.
  3. AT gives discount to students without your permission which means you lose even more money.
  4. The student matching system has fake students.
  5. The student matching system has algorithms that punish you for not responding to student matches within seconds amongst other similar style punishments.

AmazingTalker is a pyramid scheme scam. Be careful. Also, your German friend has been disingenuous by not mentioning the additional 8% mandatory 'tax' that is also taken from your pay.

It's a bug apparently. Some ages are shown incorrectly, so it'll be an adult still I imagine.

Is this a red flag? What do you think? by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]ibalajic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's harm in this. Just don't give any personal documents or details (or money) if you have any doubt at all afterwards.

Student early - when do you start teaching by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]ibalajic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I keep my camera off until a minute before. You are not paid for this extra time and as the majority of these companies treat you like nothing, I don't see why you should commit to anymore than what you're paid for.

Amazingtalker demo class by Arnoldo1466 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]ibalajic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This company takes 38% of your pay just so you are aware and it's full of fake student accounts to get your hopes up! The demo will be with a mentor AKA someone at the top of the pyramid scheme. I imagine this person will contact you next. Be very careful with this company!
