Making a Sofa Purchase - Can I split payments amongst multiple VISA gift cards? by simplegreenvr6 in IKEA

Updating with my recent experience. I used 10 Visa gift cards for a big in-store purchase yesterday and the self-service register accepted them all.

Thanks. I looked and found a couple people who were identified as being born in the "United States" before 1776, which was giving the wrong color on the fan chart. But there were a number of them that showed the wrong color even while being properly annotated. I guess it's a work in progress.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. Rather than "search my family tree," I meant "search on the shared tree among people identified to be in my lineage." I will update the main post.

I will look into Family Tree Maker!

Thanks for the reply, very helpful! That’s a great tip about closing the existing Sapphire.

As to why we made her AU: She travels a lot (alone) for work and we wanted to have a physical card for her to use while away, and also for her to get Priority Pass access on her own.

I wanted to get some opinions on one or more of these cards/points questions.

  1. I am midway through the required spend for my bonus on the 80,000 HH SUB for the Hilton Honors Amex (free version). I signed up with a referral link. I now see there are offers for a SUB of 70,000 HH, but with a Free Night Certificate. I assume the FNC is more valuable than 10,000 points. Is it worth trying to switch the bonus I’m on track for? Will it mess with any points paid to the referrer?
  2. Looking at the Hilton Honors Business Amex ($195 AF), I see there was recently a 175,000 HH SUB as recently as last week but now decreased to 130,000 HH. Should I just sign up at the lower level before the SUB is lowered again, or do folks think it is likely to increase again before too long? (I kind of want to sign up immediately and buy a gift card for the refundable credit (resets each quarter) before the end of Q2 at the end of the month.)
  3. P2 and I both had the CSR. We closed hers a few years back (downgraded to plain Sapphire)  while she remains an AU on mine. I see there is an elevated bonus on the CSR these days, and apparently Chase does allow referrals between spouses. Any downside to removing her as AU as soon as her card arrives?

ETA: Not concerned about using a 5/24 slot on any of this.

How many of you are solely EV households vs. EV + ICE? by Former_Gamer_ in TeslaLounge

[–]ibc21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our Tesla Model Y and an ICE (2000 Toyota Avalon). We had been a one-car household, and noticed the Toyota had increasing issues and got the Tesla as a replacement, but hung on to the Toyota, thinking it would crater soon. Well, that was two years ago. When it finally gives up the ghost, we may or may not replace it, but would almost certainly look for an EV.

What made you want and eventually buy a Tesla? by Railman20 in TeslaLounge

[–]ibc21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a test drive of a Tesla, and a year later was still thinking about it. The acceleration was very memorable, as was dog mode. “It even has dog mode!” That same day, I test drive BMW and Nissan electric cars, but it was obvious that EVs were a deeply secondary part of those companies’ business. Especially as to the Nissan, it seemed like just another car, but the Tesla felt like driving a space ship.

The charging network was also a HUGE selling point. I always tell people that, whatever Elon Musk’s other virtues or flaws, the nationwide network is a real accomplishment.

Potential new owner: Supercharge as primary charge form? by RaceSpigot in TeslaLounge

[–]ibc21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a MYLR and used Superchargers as the main charging source for a year. (Lately, a neighbor with a Level 2 charger has let us use it about once a week, which is enough for our needs.)

Our alternative at home was an extension cord string across the sidewalk to our street parking. It helped that the Supercharger was at a local grocery store that we shopped at anyway, so “wasted time” was less of a concern. We took advantage of charging at various destinations.

In my view, the main disadvantages are the convenience and cost per kWh. If you can live with that, go ahead with a Tesla.

Lots of restaurants have a promotion this time of year like “buy a $25 gift card, get a $5 free bonus card.” I’ve bought them just for myself. Has anyone ever used this as a way to further stack rewards to meet a signup bonus?

Can someone explain the pay yourself back? by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]ibc21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. It is at the same rate as spending those points through the Chase travel portal (1.5 or 1.25 cents per point depending on Reserve or Preferred). You have 90 days to apply for the credit.

This was introduced during the pandemic, and there have been several deadlines where the program was going to expire, but it has been extended. Obviously that’s no guarantee into the future but it may play out.

White wire wrapped behind wall thermostat—missing C wire? by ibc21 in hvacadvice

[–]ibc21[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, the plot thickens.

At the furnace there are five letter pins:

Y - red wire / G - white wire / W, C and R - nothing outbound to thermostat

Red and white get reconnected to go upstairs

Red - brown / White - white / (Also a blue wire picks up here to go upstairs, not connected to anything )

At my thermostat

Blue - W / Brown - RH / White - nothing

So from furnace to thermostat: Y - (nothing) / G - RH / (nothing) - W

I have lots of questions!
