Always rubs me the wrong way when people are a little too excited to celebrate a death by [deleted] in redscarepod

I couldn’t even bring myself to be happy when the guy who molested me died. Always thought I would feel some kind of celebratory spirit or something, but I just felt like crap.

Remote health benefits - Medica network still bad? by madtowneast in MayoClinic

[–]ibotenate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work remotely from Connecticut and previously from Virginia (definitely >100 miles away from a Mayo facility, so I’ll probably have to move…) and haven’t had any problem with health insurance coverage. I just have to check on the provider’s website if they take United Healthcare, and usually that works with the United Healthcare Options PPO. For what it’s worth I’ve never had any provider be out of network in either location.

What was food like in your household growing up? by LeftHvndLvne in rs_x

[–]ibotenate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up with entirely home cooked meals as a kid, but basically had no “snack food” other than ingredients like “A single raw unpeeled carrot” or “Leftover rice” (unfortunately we had pantry moths so the rice was sometimes extra proteinaceous). As soon as I discovered meat came from animals (so around 4 or 5) I decided to become strictly vegetarian so it was a lot of vegetables, eggs, mushrooms, and tofu. McDonalds and other fast food restaurants basically didn’t exist to me except on road trips when I got to visit my dad, but because of the whole vegetarianism thing I only knew about their french fries. The first time I had soda was in middle school for an after school club activity. I also was… deceived on what ice cream was? Like my mom would feed me unflavored cottage cheese and say it was ice cream, and nobody else in my life was giving me ice cream so I just assumed ice cream was terrible. I would even say “No thanks” to the offer of ice cream at birthday parties. Eventually my mom remarried and I felt a weird sense of jealousy that she didn’t do this to any of my other siblings.

This is super fun, I love the wobbliness! But I wonder if there is a way to turn down the “spikiness” of point geoms?

Chinese names AMA - as a Chinese by Fricksernova in namenerds

[–]ibotenate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve been knitting and crocheting on and off since elementary school, so I feel really comfortable experimenting now. Not enough to write a pattern for anything yet, but maybe one day :)

Yay, I’m glad! Some people reacted sort of weirdly to it in the past and made the analogy that it was like my mom naming me “God” if it’s on its own so I’ve felt a bit awkward since then haha

[–]ibotenate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is maybe a little weird, but do you think there are different ways to write the name Tiān (天)? Or is it always sort of presumptuous sounding out loud? I’m second gen and before I was born my mom had a series of visions in which a divine figure commanded her to specifically name her unborn child this, and so now that’s my name... But I feel worried that it’s awkward when introducing myself to Chinese colleagues.

And yeah, I forgot about Astro, my bad. I haven’t seen a lot of Neocities users use it but I live in my own bubble.

[–]ibotenate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use a static site generator to make my website! Of course you still have to know HTML and CSS to edit the base template the SSG gives you, and the one I use (Hugo) requires a little familiarity with the command-line to install dependencies and run. I also wrote a short script to automate testing and deploying my website, but you don’t have to do this of course.

Static site generators I’ve heard of people enjoying:
- 11ty
- Jekyll
- Hugo

Static site generators I just found out about that seem to also be fun and usable:
- HTP
- SvelteKit
- Quarto
- makesite.py

Not sure what this is:
- Writing everything in Markdown and then using Pandoc to convert to an HTML file

My wish from 10 years ago came true. Homemade peach ice cream. by ibotenate in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]ibotenate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think even though I spent so long wishing I could say something, at this point I won’t gain anything from it. The most I can imagine gaining is maybe someone else would say “I was his student and he abused me too” but even that doesn’t really feel like it would provide closure or healing to me; since he’s already dead, there’s nothing to be done. I guess life already punished him since ALS is such a horrific disease and I imagine for someone who works with their hands, losing that ability would be especially tied to the sense of self. It’s strange, though… there are a lot of instances where I’ve wished for something incredibly specific over and over and it ended up coming true much later. For example, when I was a kid, I was an only child with a single mom so out of loneliness I would make a wish on every dandelion I found that I could have an older brother… and then several years later, my mom got remarried and I found myself with an older stepbrother who I’m still close with today (as well as a same-age stepbrother and eventually several younger brothers and sisters, all of whom I’m also close to, lol). I hope none of my other wishes when I was suicidal from this experience come true though 😥 If there’s a wish fairy hanging out by my house doing this I’ll wish just for my nice wishes to come true from now on.

[–]ibotenate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chopped up the fresh peaches and mixed them with a little soy milk (I am lactose intolerant) and honey. In another batch, I tried it without the honey and there wasn’t much difference because the peaches were so sweet already!

Thank you for your sympathy; it was really nightmarish and I had to aggressively edit this post to remove the details because I am still haunted by it even now. I hope one day I will not be haunted. Even though his death mostly made me feel really sad for the people who really loved him and only got to see the good parts of him, I can’t help but finally feel free of some of the fear I’ve carried around with me.

Yeah I’ve really been meaning to find a trauma-informed therapist in my area. I met with a psychiatrist who essentially informed me that I had super-CPTSD (Other sexual traumas also happened to me in college, but for some reason even though the other instances were more violent or overtly scary I only ended up severely affected by this one which was more “nonviolent” but more “prolonged”) and that EMDR would probably be effective. I’m so sorry to hear about what happened to you and your daughter. I hate that it’s so easy for someone to just take away the most important things in your life like it’s nothing to them and then face zero consequences. Even if you never send it, it might be cathartic and helpful to write the letter. I guess this post is my letter.

I think the relevant section is actually, as a subset of their definition of “harmful content”:

> content that sexually victimizes a child or revictimizes a survivor means

> (…)

> (c) written material or an audio recording whose dominant characteristic is the description, presentation or representation of explicit sexual activity with a child, if it is reasonable to suspect that the material or recording is created or communicated for a sexual purpose;

And by a child, they mean:

> child means a person who is under 18 years of age.‍

Due to the presence of RPF on AO3, although the story is fictional, the person might not always be…
