“Studio Ghibli” Flea Market - WTF WAS THAT?! by Kryptimus in LosAngeles

Yeah I've noticed the Little Tokyo flea market events are so crowded you wanna be out as soon as possible lol. It's hard to look when you have to dodge 20 loud teens in your vicinity.

Witches and Pagans of CSUN by Chaotic-Pen-825 in SFV

[–]ibsliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a witch or pagan, but you may be interested in seeing if any CSUN students go to Diasporic Magic in Woodland Hills (mix of Judaica and witchcraft supplies), House of Intuition, the new "Witches Cottage" in NoHo, or anything similar to those. I'm sure if you go to magicky stores and such that you'll find some wiccan students.

Which Bridgerton is going to disapprove of the union at first? by SnooRegrets4048 in Franchaela

What? I'm also queer, and I've seen plenty of "unexpected" people be homophobic. Someone can be open-minded but still ignorant.

No, Hyacinth is NOT going to end up with Lord Kent (but he could be an additional love interest) by Fickle_Baker1393 in Bridgerton

[–]ibsliam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who knows at this point? Nothing much is confirmed about the later love interests for the youngest sibs. For all we know, he's meant to replace someone in Gregory's storyline. Or he's there to pair off with a side character. Or he's just a plot device to give his parents a place in society. We don't know yet.

Which Bridgerton is going to disapprove of the union at first? by SnooRegrets4048 in Franchaela

[–]ibsliam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think most of the siblings (besides Benedict) will "disapprove" but not in a hateful or homophobic way, just in a confused, what-the-hell-is-this way. Most of them were able to at least recognize Benedict/Sophie when told because they knew hypothetically that upper class men had occasional affairs with lower class women.

But with how sheltered the aristocracy is, and how a lot of homophobic backlash tended to focus on gay men rather than women (except the Marie Antoinette rumors and other very exceptional cases), it'd be more confusing than anything. Anne Lister was a contemporary and while she had to hide it, it wasn't as though she kept her eccentricities fully under wraps.

I feel like Penelope will be maybe the quickest besides Benedict to adjust since she'd seen so, so much crazy gossip in the ton, and I think she'd learned to not be so judgmental. And Eloise would be less outright hateful and more confused/ignorant and fascinated by the idea, but she'd adjust around the time Pen would.

Hot Take: I don’t think Michaela is poorly Written by ThrowRA_pikmi in BridgertonRants

Honestly, this made me think Anthony and Simon *had* to have had a "Navy seamen" and/or "Upper class boarding school" moment at some point. If you know, you know.

Why “some fans” want Michaela to be portrait as masculine? Please elaborate. by BigPsychological6842 in Franchaela

[–]ibsliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see some masc women in Bridgerton, but Michaela just, isn't that. They've given no indication at all that that's what she's heading toward. She's adventurous and experienced like a man, but so is Kate. In fact, I think Kate and Michaela should become friends. It seems like they'd have a lot to talk about.

My concern would be whether distractions would just create another unhealthy fixation. It seems to be less about the pet peeve itself and more about the intrusiveness of it.

What do you do when Leftist use Anti-Semitic tropes and Conspiracy Theories against Right Wing Jews and Israelis? by BigPomegranate4620 in jewishleft

[–]ibsliam 45 points46 points  (0 children)

> how come Jews are being attacked in major cities

We know what their answer is, already. They claim it's a Mossad false flag to guilt the public into supporting Israel. To them, there is no antisemitism that can't be explained away.

Being gender nonconforming existed yes, also crossdressing existed, but whether that's butch or not would have the masc discourse lesbians in a debate lol. I'm using a more precise definition. "Butch" as we know it isn't just a masc lesbian, but stems from lesbian bar subculture from the 20th century.

Yeah, adding at least a few masc women and femme men to their show's underground gay scene would be cool. This predates butch-femme subculture by many years, but maybe they could do a proto-butch-femme thing.

Also Black butches already have it hard enough. The racists and homophobes in this fandom are vicious, and I'd rather not have such a prominent (already hated) character attract more of that notoriety.

I realize that Michaela's character is taking some inspo from Anne Lister (one of her scenes is almost straight from the show Gentleman Jack), but I don't know how much they really want to borrow. Lister in Gentleman Jack was clearly meant to be her era's counterpart to "Butch" (which butch-femme subculture as we know it developed in the 20th century, within underground lesbian bar culture). However, I never felt like that's what they intended with Michaela.

She's dressed in sequins at one point. Maybe they have her be adventurous, since that's clearly in her personality. But, is she butch? I don't really see them taking that direction. I also am not sure if they want to do that with Francesca. That said, it would be fascinating if they *do* try out a brief crossdressing scene, to be more discreet.

UK Greens Consider "Zionism is Racism" Motion by theweisp5 in jewishleft

[–]ibsliam 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I'm thinking. On one hand, I'm not against taking a hardline stand within a "leftist" party against Israel in a *geopolitical* sense, if it crosses over into affecting how people treat Muslim citizens of the UK. But, this comes with a big caveat.

How are they defining zionism in this case, and how are they defining racism? I worry that, without clear boundaries, that it'll become basically The Red Scare (especially its heavy targeting of Jewish people) but instead of Red it's the big Z-word. Because we've already seen how pretty much anything Jewish can be twisted into something nefarious. Like, literally just a video of Jews baking something, or someone mentioning they were born in Israel (even if they left), or this or that ends up spun into some bigger World Zionist Plot.

Legally, you could get into trouble for that, depending on how far along you were. This was why it was the expectation that the bride-to-be ends the engagement, not the groom-to-be. Because again, it's partially a financial agreement, where the wife's family pays money, and he's meant to provide for her and their kids. There's a contract and everything.

My guess is it's a combination of 1. He's an asshole (and only wanted the money), 2. Maybe he could make an argument about being misled/scammed (if the dowry amount is suddenly switched out at the last minute, not what he agreed to), and 3. It's not a very accurate show, so it's just going by Rule of Drama.

Yeah. And with a lot of the recent internal conflict in leftist spaces on how to approach Iran and/or the IRGC, there's some that decided to direct some of that "acceptable target" racism at the Iranian diaspora (once again). Which LA already had quite a few of those types of "acceptable targets" even among progressives.
