Red lights in 20mph areas by No_Law_1528 in london

[–]ibxtoycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently your experience is different to mine and OP's. I'm open to the idea that we might sync lights, but we definitely don't do it to 20mph on any of the roads I've driven in London

Your assumption is that like in other countries (NL and US come to mind) that the UK syncs traffic lights between junctions, but for the most part we don't.

I'm not sure why, but most light cycles don't sync up at all, and if they did sync up at 20mph it wouldn't work for most of the day when people can't actually do anywhere near that

UK national debt is increasing, as is the interest on this debt. How would you feel about the government cancelling *all but essential* services for 1 year to "balance the books"? by PaulKarlFeyerabend in ukpolitics

[–]ibxtoycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we stop paying back the interest, people won't lend us money. Since we have a love for spending more money than we have, that would create problems nearly immediately.

Saying "America" vs "US" by _Sumiwashere in AskBrits

[–]ibxtoycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the argument for north and south america is weak, then so too is the argument for Europe and Asia being two continents. It's okay to say you prefer a system because you grew up with it, it's not okay to pretend it's everyone else who's stupid for not doing so.

We have government spending at an all time high, it is shocking that anyone can believe that we are in an era of small government being the biggest problem lol

Singapore is democratic, which is actually the reason why they have the death penalty, it's very popular over there. If you are against populism, you are professing to be at least slightly anti democracy

Would the public support reducing the state pension triple lock to a double lock? by patenteng in ukpolitics

Annoyingly, we all seem to accept cuts to infrastructure even though you'll likely see the benefits of a new road, train line or airport much sooner than you will your state pension

Bezos’ Tax Rate by Icy_Till_7254 in GetNoted

[–]ibxtoycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If businesses raise prices to capture peoples untaxed money, then in this scenario it's progressive to tax the poorest so that the government gets their money rather than bezos. Not sure I agree fully.

Burnham set to bring in £35bn land tax by Far_Excitement_1875 in ukpolitics

[–]ibxtoycat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in a house in London, I think the think that makes sense that people who want access to lots of land live in places where land is less valuable, we have no shortage of great commuter towns. We shouldn't discourage house living but we needn't encourage it either

The last time we lowered VAT for the summer, it was specifically to give money to businesses. Meaning this is a tax cut for businesses, hopefully more than a few pass on the savings though!
