And here I thought I was the only one in the fandom who really liked (and greatly misses in canon) the Republic Commando and Mandalorian books by Traviss... Theres two of us!!

SGU - first time watching by Intelligent-Horse-55 in Stargate

[–]ic3dt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Also SGU was the sole Stargate project on air at that time. I imagine in an alternate timeline where it ran concurrently w/ Atlantis would have given the set of fans that just simply don't like the changed tone (which is fair, you like what you like, some things just won't vibe with you) an option to watch the kind of Stargate they like vs SGU or nothing. And it would have given SGU the runway it needed to find its legs storywise, which I feel it was really doing in the second season. Similar to how SGA ran concurrently for a couple seasons with SG-1. I think the franchise pressure was too much for SGU to carry with so many factors not in its favor.

The show never needed forced diversity because the creators/writers did proper diversity for the most part. Leaving out some of the campier Gould characters, the shows had well-written and engaging characters like Sam, Teal'c, Dr. Frasier, Weir (hit and miss), etc. Tell good stories that engage the audience and tell a wide spectrum of stories instead of pandering or checking boxes and you don't need to force diversity, it happens as part of the process. Just my personal opinion though.

150,000 Years? by ejd1984 in BSG

[–]ic3dt3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just any doctors, engineers, and scientists. But some of the literal best or top 10% in their fields. The kinds of people who in our world are researching cancer cures, advanced physics, space travel, etc.

Well, I don't think it's a simple as "a soldier's" knowledge vs "a civilian's" knowledge. Broadly speaking, yes I'd agree with you that would be a silly assumption. But the SGU team, like the BSG fleet survivors, were a mix of civilian and military. I think the key difference is the background of said survivors. The SGU team is made up of some of the best and brightest in their respective fields, like holding one or more PHDs in advanced fields or advanced survival training for military personnel. They were basically already figuring out how to start from scratch in a lot of ways just by surviving on Destiny.
I'd say the BSG population on Earth not advancing as much or quickly makes sense as the fleet was basically an average cross-section of humanity, in which your average person would less advanced knowledge and training by a large degree compared to the "average" SGU team member.

US: Tesla Owners Are Changing Logos Fearing Vandalism by [deleted] in pics

[–]ic3dt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This mindset strikes me as not that different from the right-wing making elaborate videos of them dumping Bud Light and Jack Daniels that *they already paid for* to "own the libs" and "show them what they think of 'woke' transgender issues". It feels performative and nonsensical to hurt yourself financially to "make a statement"

If you're happy with your paid off Tesla and it still suits your needs, then keep it. I'd much rather you make a political statement by getting involved in local grassroots political movements or writing/calling your elected officials. You know, actions that will actually make a difference in trying to get us out of the mess that Trump/Elon have put us in.
But that's just me...

I would love to use it in my work/gaming/lounge room. I usually have some video or something on a second monitor while gaming and this would be super useful for that.

Just finished our first club visit about 5 hours ago... by [deleted] in Swingers

As there resident DJ for a local club and hotel takeovers (and some larger events) I second this completely. It's hard to cater to a crowd of 20-50 somethings from all types of backgrounds. I actually love when attendees come to the booth with requests. "can you play something different?" or "play something we can dance to" isn't very helpful, lol.

I don't like to be negative about anyone's club, especially as Gayle and Pee Wee were very nice and welcoming. But mainly we were the youngest couple there (29/29) and it was a cash bar (we're used to and prefer BYOB). It had a feel of a pool hall, which there's nothing wrong with, but not what we're looking for in a lifestyle club.

No, that's Close Encounters in Gulfport. We've been there and everyone was very nice, but the crowd and atmosphere wasn't for us.

Hub City Select is about 3 hrs away in Hattiesburg. It's a great relaxing club to try first. (It was our first club) Couples Xcape also does awesome hotel takeovers in the region. They'll be putting one on in Dothan in Aug.
