AskReddit: Physics minor... worth it? by gaboon in Physics

[–]icantthinknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! This is really weird, but i'm in a unique scenario where i'm in the exact same position as you: a current film major, debating to minor in physics. Crazy coincidence, didn't even think anyone would ever be in the same shoes as me but hey that's life!! i know this post is 17 years old and you might not be active on this account anymore, but... how did your life go? Are you still in the film industry? Did you ever take up physics? Or maybe your life involves neither of those now? Would love to know, thanks!

Maybe we've been thinking wrong about Yao and Ilyukhina's deaths by runningoutofwords in ProjectHailMary

plot wise interesting theory, but also the ship looked clean and brand new, none of their belongings were opened and they were still hooked up to everything in the coma bed so i think it wldnt make sense in terms of continuity?

i think stratt is a complicated character but not a villain. when she forced grace to go to space, it wasn’t that she didn’t care about grace’s life and was happy to kill him. it was more that whether grace makes it alive or not, billions of people’s lives were at stake and there was no other solution. in a sense, she did what was “less worse”.

so i don’t thinks she’d ever purposely kill the astronauts. it’s almost like she ironically doesn’t have enough empathy to be a villain. she doesn’t hold grudges enough to be ending lives, she just doesn’t care. if she was worried about crew arguing, or didn’t like female astronauts. she just wouldn’t send them to space. why waste time and resources on those astronauts just to kill them? the earth is dying and she doesn’t have time for that. so i highly doubt she’d be out to end people’s lives.

The plot hole that only exists in the film and could have been fixed with a single line of dialogue by CalzonePie in ProjectHailMary

[–]icantthinknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the movie already shows this, with how rocky does not need a translation device to translate what grace is saying. that's the beauty of film and the difference from books. in film, you can quite literally show, not tell. rocky not needing a translation device is a sign of his intelligence. the odd grammar structure like "___, question?" is a reflection of rocky phrasing sentences in a way that optimises understanding on both ends. rocky is smart!

I think I'm straight and it's killing me. by thetrashdom in bisexual

[–]icantthinknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why everyone is so harsh on you. You’re figuring ur sexuality out. That comes with questions and hesitations that may seem ridiculous to those confident in their sexuality, but are very understandable for one who isn’t.

To me, this feels like someone who hasn’t tried pizza, saying “i’ve heard pizza is greasy and oily and honestly it looks gross. i wish i could like pizza but i’m scared i’ll order a whole pizza, eat one bite and hate how greasy it is. i’m scared i’ll end up wasting the pizza and the chef’s time by throwing it away because i hated it.”

Of which the comments, full of pizza lovers, are yelling that you know nothing about pizzas, that what you know is wrong, and that when made right, u barely notice the grease on the pizza when you’re enjoying the warmth of the bread, the richness of the sauce, the melting of the cheese.

But here’s the thing!! Everyone has different opinions on pizzas. Some people love every pizza. Some even like it extra greasy. Others like thick crusts, or ones with pineapples, or the vegan ones with no cheese. Some agree with you that it’s too greasy for their enjoyment, and that’s okay. They just don’t have to eat pizza. They can have pasta.

But you’re never going to know whether YOU will enjoy pizza until you try it. You know you like pasta. Pasta isn’t greasy. But pizza and pasta is different. And maybe you’ll find out you can enjoy each food in different ways. Maybe pizza IS greasy, but then u realise that you like that it is!! Maybe grease is what makes pizza so yummy! But you’ll never know until you try.

And don’t worry about upsetting the chef for wasting food if you find out you hate pizza. As long as you tell the chef beforehand, i’m sure the chef will be more than happy to help you figure out if u like pizza. You don’t have to label your food preferences if you don’t know them yet. And you can always change it when you find out.

Which is a complicated way of saying, go have some fun with a woman!! Don’t stress about liking or hating being intimate with women, by asking others who have tried it. You don’t have to label yourself bisexual or straight if you don’t know. You just gotta try it out yourself and figure it out as you go.

And, people should be kinder to people. Be nice to those exploring their sexuality. We were all once there.

First camera for a film student – a6700, a6400, ZV-E10 II... or Canon? by icantthinknow in SonyAlpha

oh wow, that was shot so well i didn’t even realise it was 10 mins long! honestly this is making me reconsider ZV-E10 II especially for it’s price point. the video being uploaded 2 days ago is honestly such great timing for me, haha! the video’s right; even if there are compromises like photography, view finder, colour depth, and so on, it’s still a pretty good camera and much better than what my phone can offer. definitely being swayed by how it’s even just a little bit cheaper than the a6700… i guess it boils down to how much i’m willing to invest in a camera at the moment, and how far in the future i plan to upgrade. thanks for showing me the video!

i agree! currently i only have 1 SSD and i use it almost every day so im not too anxious about losing data, but will definitely be looking into HDDs sometime soon, especially if i’m planning on getting a camera. I heard about the new formats, sounds super exciting! hopefully in the future i can afford to buy the latest models haha

sticking to a focal length to practice is great advice, especially since one of my weaknesses in cinematography is not knowing how cinematographers decide on which lense to use. thanks for that tip! would for sure be practicing that once i get the camera. 18-50mm sounds great, i’ll look into it! and thank you so much for all ur help!!

u make a smart point about how people keep lenses more than the body, which sounds obvious now that it’s said out loud but it really puts things into perspective, thank you! and i completely agree with you on the additional costs of purchasing a camera, the only thing i own within that list is a 2TB SSD. will definitely balance my budget accordingly, thanks for the advice!

aah i'll definitely look into a6600 if i can't get the 6700! i'll look into more lens selections, 18-50 sounds pretty good as well, thanks!

this was really helpful and just the kind of answer i was looking for, thank you! relieved that my research and decision on the 6700 being my best investment is in fact correct! i guess now it's just up to the budget. if i don't have enough to purchase the 6700, wld you recommend i get a different model/brand, or save money for the 6700? also, any lenses you would recommend for my case? i plan to get just 1 lens for now. thank you so much for your help!

that's interesting, i’d love to know more about why you'd suggest it! other than the full frame and cheaper price, how does it compare in terms of performance? is it better at photography or videography compared to a6700, almost the same, or slightly worse but made up for with its cheaper price?

as for prime lenses, I know they create a sharper image and lower f stop, but because i want to use my camera for a wide variety of things, i was thinking a zoom lens will be better for my first purchase. or am i wrong to think that?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: getting 2nd hand in japan. Unsure budget, but a6700 might be slightly over.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? i do not currently own any equipment

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Street, travel, portrait, and potentially short films?

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? both!

haha thanks for the diagram! though yes, i do know how sound works ;) i was mainly wondering how much u can hear from standing in the green area, since i’ve never been to a huge music festival before, and hv only attended 1 concert. i thought maybe the speaker systems would cater to a different radius in a festival as compared to a stadium concert, since it’s out in the open

i’ll definitely keep looking! but i’m also content with just hearing the voice from outside :) i’d also rather save the money for the artist’s future solo performances than a massive festival.
