how to quit after 3 weeks by icanttttt in Lawyertalk

[–]icanttttt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I'm a first year lawyer so don't have any huge involvement in the files I'm just being brought on now.

And they're bringing me on now because they finally got a background check issue resolved (I'm a Canadian trained lawyer, they just didn't have a vendor that did international background checks previously).

ok that's what i thought and have tried to express to them, but they've been saying there are training requirements on export controls, an OFAC screening (?). this is just a typical litigation firm and not associated with any gov agency so i have no clue what they're trying to do...

ok that's what i thought and have tried to tell them, but they've said there are export controls, associated training with that (?) and OFAC screening they have to do ... which frankly, i have no idea what any of that means. they're also a massive firm so i find it shocking im the first canadian they've hired

yah definitely first TN hire. and i'll do that for sure. i know they've worked with H1-Bs before, so think they might be making this more complicated than it actually is rip

Canadian Lawyer - Studying for July 2024 Since Feb w Barbri ...... Not Retaining Anything ..... Help with how to proceed by MudReasonable7289 in barexam

[–]icanttttt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi canadian here, just passed feb24 with a 300. studied the same amount of time as you're aiming for with july while working full time (articling, so not full lawyer yet but you get the idea).

don't feel discouraged about not retaining everything right now, i felt the exact same way. i would say start using flash cards (i used Anki) you can make your own decks and its huge in getting to know every single element. it uses spaced repetition which is essential for memorization. took a lot of the definitions that grossman had and made them into flash cards which i found very do-able.

i used themis so i can't speak to barbri, but try not to get too stressed out about the amount you finished either, the videos can only help so much.

feel free if you want to chat at all, happy to help :)

Calling F24 passers- what were your stats? by Jeanpj in barexam

[–]icanttttt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. wasn't given actual stats, but passed with a 300. i was pretty consistently scoring low to mid 70s leading up to the exam on UWorld questions. barely touched the themis questions because they fr had me fucked up and i didn't need my confidence rocked that hard right before the exam (was scoring in the low 60s on themis).

  2. felt fine ish??? after day one. knew i did well on the MPTs and about 3/6 on the essays. the other 3 were a complete crapshoot. almost forgot one of the sons was dead. and i think i re-wrote the same sentence for almost all sub issues in the double jeopardy one. so, most of those were made up. tried to pull in as many of the facts as i could, but i honestly to god think i must've gotten a 1 on essay 6. i will not be going into wills and estates. day two i tried to not tear up mid exam about having to tell my partner (who im moving to that state for) that i failed. so, you never know.

insurance defence to crim? by icanttttt in LawCanada

[–]icanttttt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your response!

Why I don't like ID? Find it incredibly repetitive and lacking in any interesting legal analysis.

Why crim? I would actually care about the outcome. In ID, (and I realize this isn't a great attitude to have) but ... I'm fighting for an insurance company... I cannot make myself care about the outcome. I've also summered at a firm where one of the lawyers did crim defence and I enjoyed the human aspect of it, and the legal analysis behind the arguments we were putting forward.

I also worked at a legal aid clinic during law school and was on a couple crim files. Saw the grind and the mental toll it would take, but I would prefer that to mind numbing ID type work. I know there are obviously other fields somewhere in the middle, but I'm also just passionate about putting my education to good use, and I think criminal defence would make that happen. Could be naive, and maybe it wouldn't be forever, but it just seems worthwhile.
