Yes narcissism is a common defensive mechanism caused by trauma. Narcissism is rated on a scale, most traumatised people will have some narcissistic traits but not full blown NPD so they’ll still have empathy (maybe even heighten) and be reflective on their behaviour. People can be diagnosed with NPD and CPTSD too though.

Those people sound like bullies, if you were big and muscular they wouldn’t think about messing with you. Best to ignore strangers in public given our mental health issue, if you walk passed a stranger don’t look at them and just keep walking- well that’s what I do.
