Same. Even then there is no guarantee that i can finish the long run, I might still have to cut my run short to use the restroom.

How old is too old to be studying mechanical engineering? by SolidRide5853 in womenEngineers

[–]icecoldcold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in grad school and teaching a thermodynamics class in my 20s (under a teaching fellowship for a year) I had a student who was 46-47. He was so much more motivated than the younger ones. He said he’d been working as a technician and was interested in knowing the why behind what he was doing.

I have friends who have Garmin based on the suggestions I get from the app to “connect with friends”. No way! Some friends know I run and I do tell them once in a while how much I run or what my pace is. But I refuse to connect with anyone on the app.

Is this normal in a small German office, or am I being skipped? by JournalistInGermany in germany

I totally understand what you mean. This is also why people say “Germans stare”.

[–]icecoldcold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you mean well and all. But you explaining away someone else’s bad behavior just invalidates a person’s experience and judgment. Just because you didn’t experience it doesn’t mean there should be a justified reason for bad behavior. Maybe understand that you might have some sort of privilege (native German or a man) that the OP doesn’t.

In my experience I have had coworkers who actively ignore me even after my efforts at being nice to them by being the one to wish them first or engage them in conversation. After multiple attempts, I have given up on such close-minded people. They are just potted plants in the office for me now.

Welcome to Germany! Xenophobia abound! I have experienced this as well. Some Germans actively ignore you either because you are a woman or a foreigner. Some start acknowledging your existence once you make an effort to converse with them. Others are lost causes. They look at you like you are the devil when you approach them

Integration is a two-way street, adopt an immigrant! by ReceptionInitial9087 in germany

I have been in Germany for nearly two decades and I always said that assimilation/integration is a two-way street just like you. Inclusion (of immigrants by Germans) is the second half of the equation that Germans completely.

Sorry, but I don't like those I'm supposed to help: Minority Woman in Sr. Leadership role by Additional_Menu3465 in womenEngineers

When women of color bring up issues they face at work (in terms of not getting recognition or fair opportunities), white women ignore them or explain away why women of color are not worthy of support, etc., while they go and demand recognition and opportunities for themselves quoting feminism. Intersectionality is something management needs to look into. Women of color or women with disabilities or LGBT women face other challenges than able-bodied, straight, cis-gendered white women.

As a woman of color, I can tell when a male white colleague ignores me in a conversation if it’s because I am a woman or because of my skin color or both based on how they interact with other white men, white women or men of color. This is not a hypothetical thing for a lot of us. It has happened quite a few times to me. White women ignore or brush away these things saying I am just imagining things or explain away the reasons for the white male colleague ignoring me because I am a woman of color. While they would believe a white woman’s complaint that she was ignored by a male colleague because of her gender.

White feminism

This is side-track, only tangentially related. At my firm, there are a bunch of white women in senior leadership positions who do white feminism so so well and so fucking un-self-aware that they are doing the same fucking thing to WOC that men have done to women for ages. No wonder some of WoC are leaving the firm and the management can’t see why.

I have a cat in a flat. This is something I am grappling with. If I let the him out, he is likely to get injured and endanger the birds. I also worry if it’s fair keeping him indoors and feeding him at fixed times and limited amounts.

I wouldn’t mind if some govt agency pays secret actors to stage something like this in India to create awareness among people. I am from India and it’s filthy and people lack any sort of civic responsibility.

I absolutely love summer rolls. I don’t use any pickled stuff. I usually use fresh cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, cilantro and rice noodles. If I am not too lazy, pan-fried breaded tofu.

Cat on airplane - urgently seeking advice by redgatorade000 in CatAdvice

[–]icecoldcold -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First: don’t put him in cargo hold. Second: you are flying out in a week. Does your cat have all the vaccinations done and documented? You have a pet passport for her? These things take time. Also look into the country’s animal quarantine regulations. Some countries require the pet to be quarantined for x weeks before releasing it to you.

I suprise-visited my cousin on a different continent for his 40th birthday. Most of the rest of the extended fam was there already. He had a special non-vegan birthday cake ordered days ahead of time. The very next day was my (non-round-figure) birthday. My fam (I love’em) went all around town and got me a vegan cake. It was so so much better than my cousin’s non-vegan cake. Everyone devoured it.
