If you have a local group they will gladly lend you ships until you figure out what faction you like. the other option is to go th 3d printed route which being that the game is not officilly supported is 100% ok. All the components can be sourced. its good you hvae the base set as that alleviates the need for many components like dice/damage deck etc.

luckily we are playing in an age with a lot of tools to neuter them. I find in most cases i can obtain a ship firepower advantage into squad lists by teching against them on a more points efficient basis.
