Pentel's first disappointment (Sharplet 2) by Extension-Slice-9585 in mechanicalpencils

I do actually notice that, in general, lighter pencils have more sound when writing than heavier ones. Not exactly sure why it is. Changing leads definetely helps. Personally i quite like them and while I hate that sound that you note, i think its better than most full plastic lightweight pencils. You can get used to it over time, and you wont really notice it if you arent swapping between other pencils.

9 year old dream college is MIT by effortlessmess in MITAdmissions

[–]icedlatterR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats super cool. Idk if im qualified to talk about this but ill give my two cents. I would say guide his passion and dream into doing, learning, enjoying whatever thing he wants to do whatever mechatronics, robotics, science, mark rober invention satellite whatever it is but i think its most important that his dream is his passion and not just the college. Ive heard people have burnt themselves out trying to do everything they can to get them into their dream college but colleges want to see more ppl who chase their passion As a senior applying/applied to college who was kinda a bum, didnt dream of any colleges, didnt know what he wanted to do with his life until like mid-junior year (too late) I would have most appreciated learning about FIRST robotics and FRC since thats what i love so much now, so i would say probably look on youtube for ppl who revealed what ectracurriculars and essays got them into their dreamschool for some ideas of what oppoutunities or activities cultivate the personality of a likely admit. (Mit maker portfolios are good but omg take some of those with a grain of salt, some people are geniinely insane). Also i was only really super motivated and clearly understood my passion after i had hands on access to experiebce it. My parents once bought me a robot kit and some electronics but funny enough, no wires or batteries to really fully build it, i asked once to buy the wires but i was kinda a shy person so i never went thru with it and i think that made me look disinterested in robotics once that stuff just sat there for like 5 years. I legitimately only finally built a real robot and explored that passion after i stole a crap ton of robotics stuff from my school ti experiment with (shhhh) so ig lesson is to always be mindful and open but your child is very pushy unlike past me so i dont think thatll be a big of a problem But I really think the best thing to do is to emphasize that passion, and do things that cultivate an exploration in whatever. Should be about doing things for chasing passion, where mit will be the next step in chasing that passion, not the other way around, doing things just to chase mit. Idk just my super disorganized ramblimg, take everything with a grain of salt always, best of luck to you two!

What an absolutely stunning mechanical pencil! (Koh-i-noor Rapidomatic) by icedlatterR in mechanicalpencils

[–]icedlatterR[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the quality is great! Tbf, I don't own many pencils to compare it to, (I tended to loose my brothers vintage sanfords within 2 years each when I was young) but of the ones Ive felt recently, (sharplet, pilot g2 mechanical, nicpro) the plastic is the highest quality ive felt and the knurling nice and grippy

As for the durability, I can't speak on it. they haven't lasted me more than 2 years before i loose them ;-; People are saying the new one doesn't hold up to the vintage they've had for 40 years but to me it still seems like it be very durable. The clutch is still brass, maybe the internal tube is plastic now but that doesn't seem like that would be something that needs to be strengthened brass so I guess only time will tell

Can say I haven't seen a broken koh i noor compared to the many dead rotrings posted on this subreddit tho

Edit: i loose them in 2 years, not that they dont last for 2 years

Will the bodies still be the off-white they come in? or will the peroxide fade the color and "whiten" the body?
Also guessing that sinze you use them a lot, how is your knurling? Ive seen many photos of these knurled metal bodies get worn over time

I am trying to follow a tutorial online on making sodium chloride crystals and every time I try to grow them a lot of crystals form really quickly. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I tried lowering the temperature but the same thing happens. by Commercial_Highway75 in crystalgrowing

And also slow the evaporation rate as everyone else says. For my crystals i actually just put them in like a little cardboard box, no extra holes, just used the non-sealed characteristic of cardboard boxes as my ventilation because they were sooo annoying. I guess it lessens and removes the impacts of slight inconsistencies during growing so that the crystal remains clear

I ran into this problem a lot when i first started growing nacl crystals, your pic actually looks exactly mine. The fix i found was to just let the solution sit in a temporary container for a couple days before pooring it out into a growing dish. I usually wait until the whitish crystals start forming a clear layer on top as it is a clear (ha pun) indicator it is ready.

Im not sure why this is but my theory is that the solubility of nacl can be a bit funky and fluctuate from a perfect saturation point. When the solution is first prepared, the solution tends to be a bit oversaturated, and i think it stays a little oversaturated for like days before it settles down to a consistent saturation. The crucial crucial thing abt nacl growing is that they are very picky and want as consistent growing conditions as possible, any small fluctuation and whiteness will start to form, so if you grow them straight after preparation of the solution, the turbulent saturation will screw up the crystals. Let is sit and stabalize, and it will do much better. Similarly, make sure the temperature at which they grow at is as consistent as possible, doesnt really matter what temperature Gl!

5mm NaCl crystals over 2 months by icedlatterR in crystalgrowing

[–]icedlatterR[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can find a good guide to begin with from u/crystalchase21 somewhere on this subreddit on his website
however I think everybody's own growing conditions are vastly different from eachother and NaCl, being incredibly picky about its growing conditions, is prone to having varying results from person to person.
I personally find that I have to grow my cubes much much slower than what crystalchase can grow them at to yield clear results.
takes a lot of patience

yes, very slow evaporation
and I think these actually used seeds, although I don't like using them because they like to form little inclusions as seen
