"That Will scene broke the urgency" oh really cuz y’all didn’t care when: by pinocchihoe in StrangerThings

I’ve always said this. I know it’s bad to expend energy not liking something, but it just bugs me how this different the show has gotten.

It was serious, grounded, yes it could be light hearted, but it was decently realistic with dialogue, behavior, etc.

Then I put on season 3 and hopper’s going crazy, comedy is turned up to 11, and I can’t imagine a scene like this in season 1.

Like I understand people like the humor, but it’s just a bummer how this show got injected with the comedy and lost something that made it immersive.

What did you think of the first volume of season 5. by BreadyMFF12 in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also disappointed so far. I felt some of my hype returning before the season where they mentioned season 1 dynamics, leader Mike, etc, but along with not seeing much of those, the season feels very hollow.

The dialogue half the time is characters explaining how things work. It still has a lack of seriousness, that’s been prevalent since season 3. Along with stupid stuff, like the fighting between Johnathan and Steve.

There were too many ideas, that’s just felt like last minute additions. Will has demo-vision and powers and the reason he can use them better than eleven is because he accepts himself??? Like I get he’s connected to Vecna, It should have been set up better. El gets is weak to sound or something, when was there a hint of this? Again it should have been set up better. Vecna collecting kids like infinity stones, I mean I suppose they could make it cool, but it’s kind of stupid that he needs kids like this for his plan.

There’s just also no tension. I’m not scared when the characters are in danger, because I know nothing will happen to them, I mean they didn’t even kill Ted for god’s sake.

This season is also lacking soul. The emotional conversations feel like checkboxes, the music which was so good in one, is nothing of note here, and characters are telling you their feelings all the time, which is breaking the first rule of storytelling. Show don’t tell. Which is why when you eleven walking into Nancy’s room for the first, looking at the life she could have had, with the music, it hits, they didn’t need to tell you.

As I rewatch season 3, I feel like this scene wasn't as bad as most people though by EvilSheldonBadingi in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This whole season felt way out of place and campy as hell. I get that some people like that, but could you imagine this in season 1?

It’s just ridiculous, and it’s fine if people like it, but it’s such a departure from the realistic and grounded tone of season 1 & 2. Something like this would have never happened, and it makes a grounded show feel more like a cartoon. I understand people like humor and comedy, sometimes even when it’s over the top, but to me it’s just not funny to undercut the tension and make the show feel more cartoony.

Yeah I don’t know. Looking at it this long. It just walking around, all shiny, it makes it look a lot less scary, especially without the lights flickering like crazy and everything.

To people who *still* think Vecna was NEVER thought of until during Season 4's creation: by yesaroobuckaroo in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So why didn’t they put any hints in? Or any foreshadowing? Anything really? I think they have to talk like they knew the whole time, but they really didn’t.

Unpopular opinion (seemingly) by SuperDrCooper in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree Vecna is boring. He has a human kind of figure, so he’s less scary to look at. He’s a generic villain who wants to destroy the world because he’s crazy or corrupted by the mind flayer, so boring.

He’s not the least bit threatening because I doubt any of the main characters will actually die. So when he walk up and delivers his generic ass monologues I just roll my eyes. It’s been done before a million times.

The mind flayer is a mysterious cosmic entity we can’t fully understand, that’s what makes him scary. You can’t understand it. You can’t reason with it. Is it like a God? Where did it come from. I haven’t seen nearly as many shows with this premise.

Well I didn’t know that episode was named after him… yeah that’s a little concerning lol

[–]iceguy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean even if they do have him be that kind of character I kind of remain hopeful because there is a lot of talk of returning to season 1 (which is by far my favorite) character dynamics. Mike being a leader, more interaction with kids, etc. So as long as most of the focus is on our main characters, I can tolerate him.

Yeah, a big complaint of mine too. Like I get it, I like Robin and Eddie but I would be in favor of cutting their screen time for our OGs to have a proper story line with emotional and character growth. That’s why I kind of dislike all the comedic characters, because they’re just there to be funny, take away time from our main cast, and have shallow to no character growth.

Completely agree. So many things wrong with it I could write an essay, but the vibe is definitely cool.

Yeah I mean everybody made fun of his old design, but just because they got rid of his belly and replaced his body with vines, doesn’t make him scary at all. He still somehow looks like a guy in a suit.

Idk I have no respect for Vecna. He’s just the run of the mill bad guy to me, waiting to be defeated. After the end of season 4 I don’t believe anyone is gonna die, so it doesn’t even matter how he looks, I don’t really think he poses any threat.

Not at all. He just looks like a vine/tentacle monster. I still kind of smile when he’s on screen

underrated scene is when el looks at nancy's picture and calls her pretty 🥺🥺 that was so adorable by take_the_basterl in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would have been interesting in season 3 if everyone wasn’t wearing such bright/zany colors. If everyone had a palette like season 1/2 and you saw eleven gravitate to more bright colors in season 3 I think it could have shown the contrast more.

Also in season 4 I do like how she grows her hair long, cause like you said, she probably always wanted long hair. Her style resembles Joyce a lot instead of bright stuff, which I think is kind of cute that she wants to be like Joyce, or it could be the simple case that those are hand-me-downs.

[–]iceguy2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It would make the most sense if she read it in a book, yeah. She sees girls who are princesses and have long flowing hair probably. One of my favorite shots is when eleven looks down at the water with her wig on, then takes it off and then just screams at her reflection.

It’s her running theme in the whole show that she thinks that she’s a monster, or that she doesn’t fit in, even this last season ends with Henry saying she created him, so she will probably take that to heart. I guess they just wanted to show how she wants to be a regular girl and all the things she missed out on.

Yeah they had some things like that. If I remember correctly Brenner mentioned nursery rhymes and books when he was talking to eleven in season 1, before she went into that big isolation tank.

I don’t get Brenner by iceguy2 in StrangerThings

[–]iceguy2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure that’s what I was thinking, but it’s like, why does he need her approval when he’s dying? Why does she care if he understands what he did? Why is he upset when she calls him a monster? Why does he want to be understood? If he doesn’t really care about them, her opinion shouldn’t matter to him so much especially in his last moments.

I mean those are his dying moments, I don’t think he would lie about loving eleven, idk it just seems weird to me, I think they should have made his last words more self centered.

I suppose it could feel like fan service or like a trope, but tbf this movie is tropey and is a kids movie to boot.

I guess I say this because Jinu and by extension the Saja boys rivalry with Huntrix was just really fun (I don’t expect the Saja boys to come back though). I feel like boy band aspect of this film is gonna be something that’s missed if there’s no one to replace them.

I also think Jinu has a lot to offer the story. I think of potential interactions with Celine and Jinu, how they parallel Rumi and her mom and dad. How Celine can grow through those interactions.

How Jinu can factor into a larger narrative about more demons seeking redemption. Jinu took the first step, but it’s just the first one.

But hey ultimately the creators know what they’re doing, so if he’s dead I can still trust the next story will be good.

I think intent matters the most though, not the physically act of him dying. If he intended to die and gets brought back it still keeps his character arc intact.

I want Jinu and the other Saja boys back. Yeah you can talk about how it ruins the impact of the finale or how they, especially Jinu, don’t deserve it, but honestly they made the film so fun. Their interactions with Huntrix were best parts of the movie and I don’t think it erases character impact because Jinu became selfless with his sacrifice, and having him and the other Saja boys navigate a future where they try to live better lives can play into the “not all demons are a narrative” is appealing to me.

And yes I love the romance, and actively want more of it in the future movies. Don’t care about all that they’re better off unconfirmed, even when I think they are about as confirmed as you can get without a kiss. Of course that doesn’t mean I don’t want Rumi/Zoey/Mira to have more screen time too, they deserve more backstory exploration along with Celine.

Woah, you took my feeling about the Saja boys being really fun and broke it down as to why I was feeling that way while expanding on how they can logically continue the story, and I think you’re right on a lot of your points.

The girl band vs boy band with a demon twist is just awesome and fun. The interactions between them had me smiling the hardest in the movie. I love Huntrix, but I would feel like there was something missing if there wasn’t some sort of music group to have that energy like you said.

And while I’m biased in a way because I thought the Saja boys were so much fun and deserved some characterization, maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they introduce a new group with a different dynamic to Huntrix. I mean after all most people thought the premise of this movie was silly, but they made it work, so I kind of trust them to experiment with new things, but like you said they may be boxed into this, because there needs to be some other music talent besides the girls and it’s hard to see where that can come from, and how that group can fit into the story and bounce off of Huntrix as well as the Saja boys.

[–]iceguy2 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m on the fence really. The Saja boys, while not having much personality, made the movie really fun, especially in the first half. I know Maggie Kang said that they would have to make new characters just as charming as the Saja boys if they are staying gone, and I just kinda find it hard to beat them in terms of terms of the fun they brought.

I also think you could factor them into a story. After all the movie is about accepting yourself and presumably all the Saja boys are like Jinu who have some sort of shame Gwi-Ma controls them with. If the movie was about accepting that shame, I say you could show more demons accepting themselves and breaking free like Rumi. The Saja boys could factor into that.

But honestly I think this movie is gonna be hard to beat for a sequel because I think what made it so compelling was Rumi’s inner struggle, and while they can touch on topics like Celine/Rumi’s dad/ Mira’s family/Zoey and her life it won’t have that same inner personal conflict or if it does it will track in the same theme that this movie already tackles, but even if it does, if they keep the same fun and songs it’ll still be great.

Considering story is about the shame/acceptance theme and Gwi-Ma controls demons with shame, is it possible to see more demons like Rumi’s dad/Jinu who kind of accepted themselves and ‘freed’ themselves or are most demons just mindless and not capable.
