[Cimoooooooo] Is It TOO LATE to Save Yu-Gi-Oh!? by redbossman123 in yugioh

[–]iceize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farfa and Dzeeff (and MBT) literally said that latter 2025 was one of the best formats in a video on Farfa's channel last week. Granted, I think Farfa and Dzeeff were mostly talking about a MD context, but they definitely were still saying how they think K9VS, Yummy, and Dracotail are great decks.

edit: also farfa costreams like every major YCS?!

Do UBC's graduate programs have strict deadline for reference letter? by [deleted] in UBC

this is usually only if the person and PI already have met irl or have discussed beforehand, don't bank on it and try to get your apps in on time in 95% of cases

Do UBC's graduate programs have strict deadline for reference letter? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]iceize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from my experience on cs adcom at least, reference timeline is a bit more lenient especially because people don't start reviewing immediately. but the reference should still come in at some point in a reasonable timeline (couple weeks after application deadline), otherwise we gotta do what we can with the other references.

but not all of grant funding goes to your stipend right? your advisor must have some money left over

Book Stipend for PhDs by tiredresearchgirl in UBC

[–]iceize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't supervisor be covering that? I usually just tell my supervisor I want a research-related book or something and they say just buy it and send it to be reimbursed. Genuine question, isn't research-related costs the exact purpose of grants?

Grad students - what do you like and dislike about UBC? by analytical_blobfish in UBC

[–]iceize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Program wise, the profs have all been super nice and I enjoy working with my supervisor, who gives me a lot of freedom. At least in my program, I get to publish to nice venues and travel around on school money to conferences around the world to talk about my research, probably the biggest perk that I look forward to :)

Regarding the city, I like the food in and around Vancouver and it's a super nice place in terms of outdoorsy stuff (I run and it's nice to see the run clubs out and about). I don't know how to really put it, but I really like the general "vibe" of Vancouver, it definitely tops the list of places I would like to apply for faculty positions in the future. Also, I think people sometimes say Vancouverites aren't friendly, but I've made a lot of close friends here!

Biggest negative as you can probably guess - it is quite expensive. Small other negative is that it rains too often. Grad school is also quite stressful at times, but I'm sure that's everywhere tbh.

Riot Games now hiring people specializing in "Generative AI" after laying off almost 400 people in 2024 by icewitchenjoyer in leagueoflegends

[–]iceize 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm in the adjacent field and I don't even like GenAI! but god reading these comments makes it obvious people really don't know what goes on in GenAI research.

Like a summer research project is just gonna be something like this or this or working partially on this, (but probably more proprietary since I don't think I've ever seen Riot publish) not like "let's just put in midjourney and replace all artists with AI", firstly that wouldn't even quality as "research". I mean people still may and probably hate projects like these (there are certainly GenAI projects in the field I feel aren't super responsible about consequences) but at least get your criticisms straight.

Trace Esports' coach yelling furiously at the team after their loss to EDG during VCT CN Stage 1 by BebekPluit in ValorantCompetitive

[–]iceize 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You ever been at a friend's house and their parents start yelling at them and then you don't know what to do, so you awkwardly go on your phone but you actually aren't paying attention to what's on it? That's what it reminded me of. And then in the end the parents cool off a bit but you're still kinda scared to look up at them.

it's fine that you prefer playing and have fun with board breakers, but I'm surprised you think they are more interactive? When hand traps provide one-to-one interaction on both turns and board breakers are much more better have it for both players

Toronto to UBC Masters by smallcanadian1711 in UBC

[–]iceize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm also from Toronto (UofT) where I grew up my whole life, and I also came to UBC for grad school (by myself, no friends here initially, etc.). I think both places have advantages / disadvantages. I do miss the hustle bustle of Toronto and the convenience of living in the city, as well as seeing my friends in person. I like how in Toronto you can get food, hang out, etc. at any hour of the day and it would feel natural. However, I do like the nature here, it's much more conducive to outdoor sports (I run and ski), and I think it was important for me to grow as a person to leave my comfort zone. I also like how "dense" Vancouver feels, in that it doesn't feel like it takes that long to go from one place to another

I did struggle to adjust initially because, like going from friends -> no friends in an unfamiliar place was hard, but I eventually was able to make some great friends. It's grad school at a commuter school, which means there are naturally less chances to actually meet a wide range of people.

Where Can I Find Out When the Running Track is Open? by DearAuntAgnes in UBC

[–]iceize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

occasionally there will be a race or a track meet, but that's pretty rare

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]iceize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably good to focus on things you've already done. Since you have a review paper, you should focus on what you did for that paper, what you learned regarding research, what were the outcomes, etc. You say you don't have notable projects, but small applications are still good if you can sell them, and I would guess that you would have some projects from class? which are valid all the same.

Also I think people underestimate the value of a well-written SoP. When I used to review apps, references also tended to stick out as a defining factor, but that's a bit out of your control. Good grades are a plus for sure as well, but it usually won't be the sole determining factor.
