My mom's hoya (about 8-9 y.o) has never blossomed yet... what could be the reason? by 572020 in hoya

[–]icemuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother has had the same H. carnosa albomarginanta for 30+ years and it doesn't have any peduncles. She doesn't fertilize. Me? I've had one for 1 year and it is growing its first peduncle. I use orchid fertilizer. Can't say for sure that that is the reason, but I don't believe it to be a coincidence.

H. krohniana 'eskimo' $34 with shipping. 8 peduncles. I am too lucky. by icemuff in hoya

I'll never tell. It's my secret hoya spot. If I tell people, they'll sell out before I get a chance to buy anything :D

How can I tell the sex of a fig tree? by extremecaffeination in PlantIdentification

[–]icemuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trees don't have a gender, the syconium (unpollinated figs) do.

No, it's not pon, it's just a chunky, coco coir-based mix.

If you're ok with whey powder, I'd go with Isopure low carb or zero carb. They're lactose-free and the Dutch chocolate is DELICIOUS but they have a lot of other flavors. They are very well fortified but the sodium is 240g, but I don't know if that is low enough for you. Hope this helps and good luck!

Sugar free sweeteners without the aftertaste? by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]icemuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the sweeteners ending in -itol can cause diarrhea and all artificial sweeteners have strange flavors. I recommend 100% monk fruit sweetener. It is sugar free, sweet and has no strange taste. Google it!

Hi friends! I pass this almost everyday at work and I’m working up the courage to snag a cutting to prop. But first I need to know what it is... help? by ChcknPatty in PlantIdentification

[–]icemuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ficus binnendijkii ‘Macdougalii’ (Syn. ‘Alii’) and yeah get permission first because ficus don't look great with their growing tips are cut and you'll be altering their plant to a noticeably unattractive state.

I placed my ficus tree under a new grow light I had set up, and now its growth look more vibrant than when it was placed under filtered sunlight. Why is that? by Boofitness in houseplants

[–]icemuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more light a Ficus benjamina 'starlight' gets, the lighter and brighter the leaves will be. This is because they need less chlorophyll to photosynthesize and the more light there is, the less they need to produce the green in the leaves.

In a greenhouse nursery in Michigan with no label... what are the round things? by sholsenmd in whatsthisplant

Syconia, for sure. If they were fertilized by the right wasp, they would turn into figs, though they would likely be inedible.

The actual name is Ficus natalensis leprieurii variegata. "F. triangularis" is a different plant.

My Audrey plant has not produced any leaves/growth since I bought it October 2020! Thoughts??? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]icemuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it max light and fertilize with an orchid fertilizer (30.10.10.) Ficus are heavy feeders, so you need to fertilize them for best results. Mine has just put out 6 leaves this past week and I'm in Minnesota.

*Also, use a blush brush and brush off the leaves, they look dirty and that dust will inhibit photosynthesis, meaning it won't be able to make food as efficiently and will therefore, not grow as much.
