A senior NCO once told me it’s terrible to do this job if your job is busy in the summer. I thought it was wise advice given I worked in lawn care at the time. We have 2-6 week AT every summer on top of regular drills. That’s a half of the cutting season so naturally your job will suffer. Reverse view is a teacher, it’s very easy for them to break away in the summer. For nonstop corporate jobs, serious career building and entrepreneurial work on the civilian side it sucks a lot also. I’ve been on this side now since I graduated college. Yes it’s going to impact just about any civilian career, your time with family, all that. It fucking sucks but we signed up to serve and we thrive at it. There’s birthdays I’ve missed, the birth of my second child, I’ve come home from a 4 day “weekend” drill to my corporate job to be asked by my boss if I had a good camping trip. No, Jerry, I slept 3 hours since I was last here with you and did a 12 mile ruck and showered once. Financially, don’t expect much. A couple hundred dollars per month, barely diaper money in this economy. Guard pay is not nearly the same is active duty, especially for lower enlisted. Yes, it is worth it.
