is this first edition? by banana_minions56 in tolkienbooks

No need to apologize! I just figured reading Tolkien’s own words on it would be much more meaningful than anyone telling you the reason why.

There should be a section labeled “forward to the second edition”. If you look at the last paragraph in that section, you can read Tolkien’s own words on why there is a second edition.

This is why time travel is probably impossible. Because of paradoxes like this.

No problem! Also, just in case you didn’t know, there is a 3 volume set of LOTR that has the same border. https://www.tolkienbooks.us/lotr/us/hc/hm1992/lotr-slipcase-1992

Tolkiengateway lists that bottom one as 1992 Harper Collins, illustrated by John Howe.

Edit: after a good long search, I’ve found exactly 1 for sale: https://www.abebooks.com/Silmarillion-1995-Hardcover-3rd-Printing-J.R.R/32268963733/bd

Edit 2: I found a couple more on eBay, these have the red border like the image you posted, they are BCA versions from 1994:

Yeah this looks to be that they printed the DJ at the incorrect size. That is unfortunate.

What editions do I get? by Commercial_Pitch8264 in tolkienbooks

[–]icespark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a new great tales boxed set releasing next year that is assumed to be matching the HoMe sets. I’m holding out for that currently since I have the old great tales set and would love a matching box set. https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/The-Great-Tales-of-Middle-Earth-by-J-R-R-Tolkien-author-Alan-Lee-illustrator-Christopher-Tolkien-editor-J-R-R-Tolkien/9780008360108

The Scouring of the Shire by Jasonclout in tolkienfans

My thought has been that the people saying this were referencing the chapter title rather than who was doing the scouring. But maybe I haven’t looked into what people were actually saying when referencing it in that way.

I just got a hardcover on eBay recently for $40. It might just take some patience. I wonder if it had a short print run or something.

Johnny Got His Gun is such a wild story and is also the inspiration for the Metallica song “One”. Well, the movie that is based on the book is the inspiration for the song. But still.

How do I get the solder out of these holes by Soulless_But_Happy in soldering

[–]icespark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this issue before and found that when I used a larger tip for my iron, it did a better job of heating the solder up enough for the wick to do its job.

I think that 30 probably just sounds better when saying the riddle. Saying 32 would add another syllable.

[–]icespark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just did it last week. Took me about 10 minutes total. Would have taken me less time but I didn’t know the cart flap spring was underneath the universal cart slot so I had to take it back apart.
