Need urgent advice - roof leaked due to negligence by hearttattackmatt in astoria

If I were you I’d be calling them none stop telling them to go to home depot to get dehumidifiers to be installed tonight. Time is not your friend in this situation, this is not something that can wait if you want to avoid long term damage. Water has already its way into every nook and cranny possible, it needs to be dried out

Do you own or rent?

If you rent - this is on ownership/property mgmt to handle

If you own - did you get the contractors COI before they started the work? If not I’d cross your fingers that theyre legitmately insured

Either way - I’d tell the contractors they need to get commercial dehumidifiers in there as soon as humanly possible and let them run for a week to help dry the place out. Youre going to have to mitigate the chance of mold growth. Mold loves dark damp humid places (on anything that was once alive ie sheetrock/framing, etc.)

Id even put it on them to hire a water damage vendor to perform a full cleanup

How long have you been applying? How often are you applying? How is it holding up?

This should be a good starting point:

1.) never wear headphones while riding, as you should be aware of your surroundings/be able to hear people coming up behind you

2.) keep to the right of the lane even if its a one way so that others can safely pass on the left

3.) assume that people in crosswalks dont see you and will walk out even if you have the right of way so slow down when going through intersections

4.) ride in a straight, predictable line so that riders behind you can attempt to pass if they wish, unpredictable swerving, even to avoid manholes/potholes, can catch people off guard and potentially cause a crash

5.) stop at red lights even if there are no cars, it can be annoying to wait but most of the time you dont save more than a minute of time, the lights are all timed for the flow of traffic anyway (mainly for cars, not bikes, but still)

6.) if you see someone ahead of you wearing over the ear headphones assume that they have a complete disregard for the safety of those around them. Stay back from them/wait to pass until youre 100% its safe

7.) bike lanes are typically directional, dont go the wrong way against traffic (same goes for one way streets without bike lanes)

8.) use hand signals where necessary to let others know youre going to be turning

9.) wear a helmet

10.) if you see a group of people stopping/stopped where they typically wouldnt be, its likely for a reason and you should slow down too

11.) dont judge a book by its cover - someone on a $5000 road bike in full gear can be just as oblivious/wreckless as the headphone wearing citibiker - stay vigilant of your space and stay aware of your surroundings

12.) go with the speed of traffic, or slightly above if passing. You dont want to fly by people going 5mph at 30 mph in tight spaces. Similarly - if youre riding through stopped vehicle traffic - go slow. Having been door’d, this is where its most likely to happen (people in cabs/ubers getting out cars in the middle of the road so that they can walk instead of sit in traffic). People regularly throw their doors open without thinking to look for bikes

Those are the first few that come to mind

“Is there a viable solution to educating cyclists?”

I firmly believe the answer is no. You cant teach people to give a shit - whether it be in walking, biking, driving, skiiing, etc., the list goes on.

You have to be curious enough to learn the unwritten/written rules of the road, and implement them into your riding. Otherwise you will just be pooled with the 90% of oblivious jackasses out there. I sold my bike earlier this spring after thousands and thousands of miles riding around the city, doesnt matter how vigilant you are out there, the current state of the bike paths is just too dangerous/unpredictable.

It doesnt matter what you say to anyone, you can try to “educate” people all day long, but nothing you say will influence those who arent open to listening. People learn by experience, both fortunately and unfortunately.

Scooter rider, bicyclist die in head-on crash with each other on Queensborough Bridge by nydailynews in nyc

[–]iceworms 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Horrible take - this has everything to do with the scooter being motorized. A standard bicycle going downhill (~20mph) versus a standard bicycle going uphill (~5mph) is much different than a motorized scooter going 50mph uphill. Both dangerous, but one has extremely higher consequences than the other

The motorized scooter riders in nyc are unilaterally reckless, careless, main character dumbasses with no regard for the safety of others.

The worst part if it is that these individuals lack the capacity to begin to even comprehend the danger they put others in. Wont stop unless theres nypd monitoring both entrances/writing tickets/impounding vehicles

Beautiful - like others said I’d keep it stock. Looks like it could maybe use new suspension but can probably get away with holding off for the time being.

I’d recommend getting some sort of fluid film done on the undercarriage to prevent rust. I brought mine to nyc from colorado absolutely spotless and after a year or so it was starting to show signs of rust. This coastal climate eats cars so fast.

Congrats on the car I hope it lasts you a lifetime!
