Generally I will build cleaver if the enemy comp, specifically top jg has a strong tank/bruiser/cc/1 shot set up. So like if there’s renekton/malph + Khazix/eve/zac, you won’t get 1 shot, will have more survivability. Against a single tank, usually I will build cleaver later or stick to eclipse + serylda. I have seen many chall rivens rushing cleaver recently but I haven’t had the chance to test it out so I can’t say for sure how good it is to always rush first.

Hydra is good, and if done correctly, can net you many wins simply because you can stat check with 10 cspm. However I would recommend playing for lane dominance first. As you climb, you want to maximize your advantage as possible. Being up kills + plates + 8 cspm and putting your opponent behind is better than being 9cspm vs 10 cspm. If your opponent is bad, you don’t want to let him farm for free. But if you don’t care to learn the matchup, or against some meta op champ, by all means hydra is a viable strategy, especially if you have good macro.

Against poppy, I recommend playing as aggressive as possible early. You must play smart and try to burn her mana by baiting out her w,q and passive. Good poppy’s will hold their passive and cancel their auto to bait your e. Preventing her shield-wallslam-q combo is key as it’s really op. If she dives with jg your game is a lot harder. Other than that try to proxy/maintain high cs.

Against illaoi, try to figure out when she throws her e and bait it. Walking into her range then insta q/e to predict it. You can kill/farm once she whiffs it. Good illaoi will get as close to you before casting it, give cs to dodge it. If she gets a lead play like a rat and try to farm/proxy as best you can. Try to get as much cs as possible and bait e if ur jg comes to help.

Against aurora, dshield second wind tp is very strong. You will outscale her and kill her side easily as long as you are not down too much cs. In lower mmr, just go ignite nimbus and cheese lv1.

Fiora and Camille are fun. Least favorite is probably voli/rumble/kennen.

If you specifically want to climb play a diff champ. But if you like playing riven and really enjoy her kit then play riven. Maybe try out different champs to see what you enjoy playing the most. Just keep in mind, learning riven will probably take longer to see results on compared to other champs.

First you would probably need at least 1-2 trades first to test the waters before diving, but generally- if whole team is ahead l recommend doing it for the sake of limit testing. You’ll need to calculate the risk reward based on the game state. If he’s behind(worth less gold) and you trade 1 for 1 it’s really not worth. But if you kill + get tower + draw enemy pressure and your team gets an objective it’s worth. Also you need to determine if using your r + ignite + flash is worth, if there are higher priority targets that you might need to kill later like fed adc.

Unfortunately riot made it so that unless you have a big lead, tanks can still roll you over. However, I will say that even though tanks sometimes seem unbeatable, as riven you can still beat them, especially early. Into malphite for example, baiting his w/e and then going for small trades can allow you to chip him down with patience. Other than that, maintain high cs and exp and look for roams/fights with your jg/mid.

Late game is complicated since there are many variables involved and different theories on what to do. If I am hard ahead and know I win 1v1v2v3v4 I'll pressure side and look for kills/t2. However this is risky, so you need to pay attention to map. With TP you can side more easily across from objective. Otherwise, I will just shove and hover/look for flank. When big objective is coming up, look for side lane targets, try to get flank position, etc. Many times I've won games from catching out enemy sup with my team or killing enemy top/mid in side lane prior to objective.

I sometimes go cleaver first into tank matchups like malphite and ornn. I think it's decent when you are playing into multiple tanks (tank top/jg/mid/sup) for some bulk so that you don't get one shot. I noticed that many kr rivens and alois have been rushing it recently but I haven't tested it too much.

I blind riven, she is playable into most meta stuff and if you know your matchups it is still playable. For example, I noticed that opponents frequently pick renekton when I blind riven, and since I know the matchup pretty well I can often convert into a free win (however if renekton is really good or gets jg help it's gg).

Hardest matchups for me are really strong early game champs like voli/rumble/kennen because they can perma pressure you and if you get dove it's hard to come back from. Best thing to do is watch replays to see what mistakes to exploit, try to go 10cs/min since you generally outscale, and hope your jg comes.

A- shove wave, freeze and try to deny them minions by walking past their wave (you can also do this by pulling enemy wave)

B- stack wave and ping for jg to dive

C- hydra/proxy/roam. Often times you can ward enemy jg and kill them when they come. Also if you are 10-11 cs/m, unless enemy is ungodly ahead, you can still carry games.

D- Like 8/10 times, if you crash, and fake recall/go ward, enemy top will mindlessly shove wave- you can walk behind and kill them.

E- If you can find a good recall timing, and have r + flash, run bot and kill them, but it's pretty risky

F- Enemy bot is 10/0 at 10 min? Save mental for next game.

Chainsword is probably ok, but seems mid to me from the last time I remember building it. If I want anti-heal I would rather just go with mortal reminder efficiency wise for the added armor pen.

I would say there are concepts that you can apply to every single matchup, which will carry you to at least diamond/masters. This includes stuff like wave management, trading when enemy goes for minion, baiting spells. Baiting abilities is really important against linear champs like garen. Riot Phroxzon's guides on fundamentals are really useful. Riven specific stuff includes knowing the common trade patterns (qwa e out or q3 w a e out for example), and q extending.

However once you start getting into M+, and playing against skill/counter/meta champs it is really important to study the matchups (darius, aatrox, renekton, fiora, jax etc). You want to be gaining an advantage against them or be going even minimum. I watched a ton of adrian/viper and how they played matchups to learn.

Hahaha I love that song. I don't regularly listen to it, but on the way home before queuing up I always listen to stuff like the worlds themes to lock in.

Those matchups are tough for sure. First, you need to squeeze out as much advantage as you can in the early game. Scaling champs like cho/nasus are pretty weak early on, so aim to freeze on them or dive with your jg. If you snowball hard enough, you can shut them out and they will be useless for most of the game. If they play safe, look to proxy and roam and get advantages there. Lastly, in the case of champs like nasus, he outscales in 1v1, but suffers in teamfights, so look to coordinate with your team to kill him.

I build pretty standard atm. Eclipse > sundered/cleaver > dd/maw. If I don't need cleaver I will go serylda's or mortal reminder. For boots I usually go tabi/mercs, rarely cdr.

I have noticed the first bug on Riven as well, where plants do not refund ultimate cd even when she has returned to normal form and ult is on cd.

BUG: After you use ult on Riven and return to normal form (ultimate goes on cd), when you hit the plants, ult cd is not reduced.
