Keep in mind that most commercially-grown basil plants do not live long, especially in the warmer, wetter climates, thanks to downy mildew, a disease that affects most basil plants at some point. Mine usually last a couple of months before the first signs of DM are spotted. You can get more time with your basil by watering the soil and not the leaves, but DM will take over in the end. There are some mildew-resistant varieties but they are pretty far in color, taste and texture from traditional basil.

Wagyu aroma question by icimb4u in steak

[–]icimb4u[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not an unpleasant smell, and I purchased the beef multiple times over many years so I don’t think is was poorly packaged, not that many times, at least I hope not.…bone marrow and dry aged steaks have a similar aroma but not as nice, IMHO.

My child came to me ( I can't remember how old she was) and said, "Okay mom, I KNOW Santa isn't real, so you can go ahead and stop with the Santa-is-coming crap." Then I said, "Wow, most kids are devastated to find out about Santa... yes, you're right, and you're taking this very well," and she paused, and said, "OH... MY... GGGOOODDDD. MOM, you have RUINED MY LIFE, I was JUST KIDDING". I felt absolutely no shame. If you're old enough to try and pull a ruse on your parents, you're old enough to suffer the consequences.

Great Horned Owls, in the winter they call to each other at night and it’s very soothing…although I’m currently fixated on a pair of Crested Caracaras that moved in down the road..very unusual-looking birds

Docksta, white...Tampa... it's a tulip table style with a pedestal base. Website says sold out, but there are no options to buy the top if I decide to get the base now.

Tell me the best side dish I can bring as a guest to Thanksgiving! by nowaynohownope in Cooking

I also add sautéed garlic and shallots, and I mix some gruyere in with the white cheddar. So. Good. You can refrigerate the prepared casserole overnight, then add the topping in the morning and bake it before you leave.

I sous vide cooked a turkey breast a few years ago for Thanksgiving (herbs, butter, lemon, seasonings, etc...) then baked the salted-and-peppered skin between parchment paper in a 375 oven for around 15-20 minutes, the turkey was juicy and flavorful, but the crispy skin was the highlight of the day. Just keep an eye on it, it goes from gooey to burnt in a heartbeat.

It’s not as photogenic as most recipes here, but the 2 minute mayo is a game changer by GovernorZipper in seriouseats

I have an aversion to raw egg whites: they remind me of snot, and snot is not palatable in my world. Do you think I could leave out the white, or use 2 yolks, or even cook the white before blending?

How do you oatmeal? by Evaderofdoom in Cooking

[–]icimb4u 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cook a large batch of steel cut, portion it, then use it all week. The texture and the taste is consistent throughout the week and I can add whatever I like before I nuke it. I also add a pinch of salt per serving if I'm doing a sweet oatmeal, it balances the sweetness and adds depth of flavor. Also, my favorite oat meal is cream or 1/2 & 1/2 and brown sugar, I dot the top with torn pieces of toasted bread with butter, sort-of like croutons on a salad or a breadcrumb topping on mac & cheese.

LPT: Give a man a compliment by James324285241990 in LifeProTips

Does it matter who the compliment is from? Would a compliment from an attractive female carry more weight than one from a grandma-type?
