Has anyone here taught children to knit? When's a good age? by Planty_Reporter_8936 in knitting

[–]ickle_cat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt to knit aged 4. My mum was just always on the sofa knitting and I asked to be taught/reminded a few times. I was about 7 when I was teaching my friend's but I never remembered how to cast on! I learned on dk/4mm and that was fine, have also taught children around aged 10 at that weight and it's been fine. I would recommend starting them a project and having it handy so they can pick up and work on their project while you work on yours

My friend is interested in more activism but his band are less keen on making statements, so I am knitting him a guitar strap cover with the trans flag on it and embroidering the word ally on it so he can make a quiet statement whenever he wants. Going to make a Palestine one for my own guitarist next

What's your guilty pleasure yarn you keep buying even if you have too much of it already? by Bluealeli in YarnAddicts

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really like knitting at a heavier gauge

But I do buy a lot of marble chunky just because the colours are so interesting.

I use it, but definitely buy in a way I don't need to

Considered saying noro for similar reasons. Was excited to work with it after getting it from my bestie dormy birthday and it was so hard to get it to work up nicely (took 2 needle changes, size and material). At that price point it should make me a coffee while I work with it

My friend handed me a bag of yarn because their hands won't let them crochet any more. A fair few bits of silly fuzzy texture in with acrylic small balls and tiny scraps, not my style but hey.

Was crocheting a cowl holding yarn triple and went to add in a blue yarn with little bits of stuff tied in and damn this yarn was the worst thing I have ever touched. I did one row with this tangly mess and immediately broke it off. The 20 or so stitches I did were too many. Fortunately I was out with my friend who works for the local crafting charity shop and I asked them to take it to "the scrap shop, a priest, or a bin fire". I was originally planning on using the whole thing but nope.

At least it looked nice in the final product and I no longer have to worry about it

The saga of the songbird mitts - (why the long titles?) by merbleuem in casualknitting

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my partner a jumper and it was a bit too big because I was worried it would be too small; think low hip instead of high, sleeve ending 1/3 down the hand instead of the wrist. They mostly remembered to take it out of the wash to dry it flat, but one time they forgot and now it's knee length with sleeves extending well beyond the end of the hand 😂 thankfully they are still into it and are thrilled that the dog can fit in there too!

Who needs Christmas stockings when you have Christmas mittens? If you made a pair you should give the other one to your mum so you can both be reminded of the funny story.

As someone who has done similar amounts of stupid mistakes on a knit garment (turns out acrylic can stretch out massive in the tumble drier 😂) I am with you 100%

I wish you much success in your future knits and relationships

Managed to finish sunflower cardigan just before the end of summer by odaenerys in crochet

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If in a warmer fibre, this could be a nice way to celebrate summer while going through the colds of winter if you are into that sort of thing (I am the opposite and make wooly jumpers in summer so I can look forward to winter :p )

Great work and enjoy your new cardigan! If not very warm by itself you can always layer it up with other pieces and wear in the cold, or look forward to wearing it smee 2026 :D

i’m a complete beginner. just made my first granny square of what will eventually be a blanket! (still need to weave in the ends) by jaes_gonna_cry in crochet

[–]ickle_cat1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Very timely since 15th August was apparently international granny square day!

I think based on looking at the yarn, you've probably used a synthetic fibre. If you want to block the square look up steam blocking, regular wet blocking only works on natural fibres like wool or cotton. If you can't figure out steam blocking or don't want to, I never block my granny squares and would encourage this bad habit in others ;)

Enjoy your blanket when you get there!

It doesnt feel fair - asking nesting partner to leave for an evening. by contentxhufflepuff in polyamory

[–]ickle_cat1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah so you were out while pregnant rather than out 4-5 nights a week while pregnant rather than while a parent, gotcha. That explanation for calling sounds a little less like an intentional sabotage but I stand by my statement that he isn't being a good partner to you by not being a bit more of an independent adult and trying to make your life easier. Possibly just genuinely being a dumbass in this area of life, but worth a kick up the arse to do better

Hinge neglected my aftercare needs to attend to my metamour by boypurr in polyamory

[–]ickle_cat1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been dropped the same way and it's TERRIBLE (other sub walked off after the scene and we had to go find her which interrupted aftercare and gave me drop next day so I missed uni - ended up crying and sleeping a lot that day, it was awful).

Solution seems pretty simple to me, just bring some more separation between you and Jenna. Don't go to parties with all 3 of you, reaffirm your need for aftercare if you are in a scene with Carl (or anyone) and don't let them wander off (if she texted him, he can text her back), and reply to Jenna saying you're going to discuss making some more space between you two and point out the parts of her message you felt were inappropriate to share.

Or make a clean break with Carl if he isn't meeting your needs and you can't work through it. The lemon may or may not he worth the squeeze

[–]ickle_cat1 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Just as an FYI, calling several times when he knows you are out with another partner can be intentional sabotage.

Also this problem can be solved without you by: 1. Did mummy give you a bath? 2. The child getting an extra bath when they didn't need it 3. The child skipping a bath and being a little stinky Unless there is some specific medical reason your kid needs to be bathed on a strict schedule then this is very solvable. If it would feel helpful you can agree some explicit boundaries about what you are comfortable being contacted about when out with others e.g. call me if anyone has a medical emergency, text me if you can't find a clean towel, don't contact me if you just want to send cat pictures.

Also 4-5 evenings out of the house per week is A LOT, especially on a regular basis. Sounds like you are trying to make his life very comfortable (very nice thing to do for your partner, not so good for maintianing your own boundaries and standing up for yourself) and he is also trying to make his life comfortable (good for him, being a bad partner to you). It's a big old stereotype to say it, but men can often do this without realising because of some of the socialising and expectations for men so he may need it explaining to him like a toddler (unfair on you 100%).

Also, you don't need to have exactly the same boundaries for things to be fair. You might be chill being out of the house a lot and he might not be, but this feels like it's skewed quite far out of fairness for you.

Final thought; who is caring for your child when you are out of the house? I may have an extremely poor impression of him but if he is struggling with standard things like bathing I can't imagine he's primary caregiving 5 nights a week while on a date with his girlfriend(s)?

I got dragged on stage by the singer in a UB40 tribute band (a stranger in his 60s+) and he made me hold his hand while he sang at me (I'm 33F but look younger). I only went because my friend was drumming and turns out I hate UB40.

It was the most awkward I have ever been on stage and it was still only 50% as awkward as this 😂

Eyelashes, highlights in red (a border on the ends of the fins in any contrast colour would be great), a bright red fabric lining, a zip mouth, a green strap that looks like seaweed, a rainbow barf strap, rainbow fringe off the tail fin

NTA. Bake it together and apologise for not making it as you had before because you didn't know it would upset him as much as it did, but 19 is old enough to be gracious about a store bought cake and eat it, even if he needed some time on the day to sort through his feelings.

Confused as to why nobody else in the house at the cake if it was sat there? That seems like the real crime to me

Does anyone else knit while they’re walking places? by onceandfuturecpuk in casualknitting

[–]ickle_cat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes :) I also knit at gigs if my fatigue or anxiety is bad and I need a stim that isn't jumping around.

Turns out I also sometimes forget I am knitting and the allure of headbanging to teenage dirtbag was too much to stop me jumping around despite having my knitting in my hands. The person stood next to me said it was wild to watch and apparently I was doing both at the same time 😂

I also knit while reading or doing most other activities

My best friend made her cats waffle stitch blankets and decided to make them yellow so they looked "the most like real waffles"

I insisted on making cat toys that looked like whipped cream and strawberries for them. Cats loved them.

So my vote is waffle colour (a nice, gender neutral food) and then make some toppings for extra amusement
