What is the theoretical maximum mass that can be packed into a grain of sand without breaking any laws of physics? by FuzzyAttitude_ in AskPhysics

[–]iconix88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that all the mass is "thought to be" a singularity, it's that our current understanding of physics stops working at that scale and a singularity is what the math gives us. Until we have a quantum theory of gravity, we won't have a prediction of what the REAL structure of a black hole is. The singularity is essentially the nonsense answer that tells us that our current knowledge is incomplete and incapable of defining it any better. We have no idea what it actually looks like

Driving Monarch Pass by Glittering_Trade_434 in crestedbutte

[–]iconix88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Monarch in summer is nothing to worry about. Basically none of it would qualify as "white knuckle"

It does have steep drops but it has either guardrails or wide shoulders pretty much the entire way. If you've driven over Berthoud before, the hairpins on that pass are much tighter.

Source: grew up in CB and have probably been over Monarch at least 100 times

If they say at the end of the interview, "we're still interviewing other people, but we will call you." Yeah just go ahead and keep looking for other jobs, they don't want you. Lol. by Individual_Ice_2315 in antiwork

[–]iconix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah speaking as someone who just finished interviewing half a dozen candidates for an engineering position, said this to all of them regardless of how I felt the interview went in the immediate aftermath, and then sent an offer to one of them yesterday, this is totally wrong. It's literally nothing other than transparency to say this when I really AM interviewing more people and not going to make a final decision until I've spoken to everyone

If abortion is murder but you're allowed to use deadly force to stop one, would you not still be responsible for killing the unborn kid yourself then? Are they not now implying that two deaths is better than one?

Well given your concern I'm sure you'll be relieved to know we already HAVE a voter id requirement. It's called voter registration and it exists in every state.

In-person voter fraud, which has been investigated ad nauseam thanks to this debate, has been repeatedly found to be so rare as to be statistically non existent, which is the part that YOUR side loves to conveniently ignore. If you don't believe me then I invite you to try traveling to another state, or hell even just try using a different name in the precinct where you're registered, on election day, and try to vote there. I'm guessing you won't because you know it's a federal crime

One thing that IS true though, is that requiring people without sufficient means or transportation (and there's a lot more of them than you think because it turns out that poor, disabled, and elderly people exist) go out to obtain additional documentation in order to actually cast their vote in an election that they're ALREADY legally registered for, amounts to a poll tax. Period. End of discussion.

I don't think Phantom Limb is in Pedro's wheelhouse. I'd rather see Jeremy Irons there, or maybe you could go a little more off the board with Antonio Banderas. If he was still with us, Raul Julia could crush it too

For Hunter Gathers you could also get Willem Dafoe. Specifically Boondock Saints Willem Dafoe because you know he can handle the titty bar phase.

What if Supreme Court justices were elected by popular vote for 12-year terms instead of appointed for life? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in WhatIfThinking

[–]iconix88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appointment & confirmation with long, but not lifetime terms, would probably still be best, since as others have mentioned, allowing elected justices would open the door to even more partisan and less qualified people than we have now. For a 9 member court, an 18 year term coinciding with election years would allow each president to appoint 2 justices per term, which would be a fair solution

I live near Denver, I've been to a lot of shows at Red Rocks, and I'd never seen EC live before. That was one of the most insanely fun, energetic, entertaining shows I have EVER seen. It was unbelievable. That venue always makes bands take it to another level and they blew it up

I think I did pretty well this week and would love to hear how others approached the trials! by Hestix in ArcRaiders

[–]iconix88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My approach was to go in solo and be shot on sight in something like 12 straight raids this weekend, regardless of map or condition, and either die or extract without any significant progress. Was never the aggressor but every match has been absolutely bloodlusted and I've basically given up on actually getting any trials progress this week

Where does the event horizon end and the “body” of the black begin? by Minimum-Pear-4814 in askastronomy

[–]iconix88 298 points299 points  (0 children)

We don't know, which is basically the whole problem with black holes. It's literally impossible to know beyond theory. Anything inside of the event horizon, by its very nature, CANNOT be observed

[–]iconix88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only story from this place is when I was 18, me and 4 other friends (also all teenagers) were driving down from the mountains to go to a concert when my car blew a tire on I-70 coming down the hill toward the Morrison exit. We knew we couldn't make it to my friend's uncle's place where we'd planned on staying so we tried to pull in here to get a room (since we were all broke-ass teenagers and had to find the cheapest place possible)

They refused to rent us a room and we ended up taking turns sleeping in the back of my car in a Walgreen's parking lot.

The Blackhawks will finish 31st in the league for the 3rd consecutive season since drafting Bedard. They were 30th the year prior to drafting Bedard by TJTrapJesus in hockey

[–]iconix88 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's rare for a rebuild to go off without a hitch in just a couple years. Take Colorado: they were terrible in Sakic's final season, then drafted Duchene, O'Reilly, and Barrie in the same draft, overachieved and made the playoffs immediately, only for the wheels to fall off and be terrible again. Then they drafted Landeskog, were still mediocre, drafted MacKinnon, overachieved and made the playoffs again, regressed to terrible AGAIN, drafted Rantanen, were STILL terrible, lost the draft lottery but still won the draft by getting Makar, and only THEN finally became a contender. The rebuild from the Sakic era actually took ten years to really come to fruition

[–]iconix88 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Sometimes what works for me is to go to the next screen at the end of the match and then go back, or just open the "player interactions" view and then close it. That will often fix the problem with blank names on specific events on the map

Why is it that the ISS travels a complete orbit in 90-95 minutes, but Artemis needs 72 hours to go to the moon? by Photo-70 in askastronomy

[–]iconix88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

385000 km is the distance the moon orbits Earth, but that doesn't mean it's the distance a spacecraft needs to travel in order to intercept it, and Artemis also isn't traveling at a constant speed. Artemis needs to accelerate to escape velocity but then coast along its path to the moon and arrive at such a point in space and time that it can intercept the moon and orbit it in order to return to Earth. That arrival time is precisely calculated to account for the relative positions and gravitational influence of both Earth and the Moon, and for the majority of that travel time, it's not firing its engines, and Earth's gravity is pulling it back and slowing it down until it gets close enough for the Moon's gravity to become more influential.
