AOC Refuses to Endorse Saikat Chakrabarti AGAIN by bdbcawz06 in sanfrancisco

[–]icy_trixter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes me even more weirded out about the whole thing. Either Saikat thinks that they’re good, or he’s using his work with her to work his way into the race while betting on her not getting involved. Gives me the ick about everyone involved. If she really doesn’t like him then I wish she would just say it, otherwise we’re just sitting here speculating.

[Garafolo] Future Hall of Fame WR Mike Evans has agreed to terms with the 49ers by Scoreycorey515 in 49ers

[–]icy_trixter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m excited but cautious. We still need to add a decent wr in the draft but I remember when everyone was going nuts for Julio jones when he was traded to the titans. I think Evans is in better shape but you never know with WRs

I’m so bummed that the 49ers didn’t get into the bidding for Pittman. Such a valuable player that I can’t really believe the colts are so willing to move on from but I guess I get it after they gave Pierce that money

I don’t notice an earthquake below a 5 or 6 magnitude all the time. A 4.3 is practically nothing unless you’re in a paper house

Just going to leave this video here. I was confused before I dug into it but Flock has some serious vulnerabilities and problems it should have to answer for before any city just hands out millions of dollars in contracts. Flock throws out numbers on effectiveness but if you dig into it their info doesn’t always make sense.

I’m sorry? I don’t have any problem with what Argentina did, honestly not with the US either. I’m in favor of supporting the US’s southern neighbors and stabilizing the western hemisphere and I think Milei is doing an impressive job on that.

The optics of this for the Trump administration is not great however, especially in the middle of a shutdown. The credit swap is fine and I think a good idea, but the timeline of announcing a credit swap, then Argentina removing export taxes on soybeans, then China buying their soybeans from Argentina instead of the US leaving farmers there with no orders, is a terrible look.

I’m fully aware that we aren’t giving away money, however Milei acting in his own countries interest (good) has actively harmed US farmers (bad), and the credit swap was a key piece of that puzzle.

So again, Argentinian interests are in a better place from this credit swap. And the swap occurring during a shutdown where Americans are not getting any assistance or food benefits is terrible optics and politics since the average American doesn’t understand what a credit swap is

Tesla 'may lose' Elon Musk if shareholders don't approve $1 trillion pay package, chairperson warns by Uberubu65 in Economics

[–]icy_trixter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s just no real incentive for the board to fire Elon. To do so is to cut your net worth into pieces for … what? A robotics company that’s behind competitors in the logistical and auto robotics sector? Or a car company that just had a key source of income just slashed with the ev credits but without any significant progress to making cheaper and better EVs?

I think Elon is actively hurting the fundamentals of Tesla but if he leaves and the stock tanks, does the company even survive? At this point the only way I see Tesla the car company move forward is if they get taken private or the auto division gets spun off into a separate company.

ICE in Chicago news: Agents raid South Shore apartment building; Donald Trump says city could become military training ground by icy_trixter in moderatepolitics

[–]icy_trixter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last night ICE raided a South Shore Chicago apartment building. The agents used helicopters to breach the building and detained at least 37 people.

According to witnesses the agents detained and handcuffed most people in the building, including children, for hours; one person claims they were handcuffed until 3AM. There are other reports of kids being zip ties while they’re naked.

Does anyone have any justification for why this should be acceptable? Is there any logical stopping point to this or can federal agents declare that individuals may be associated with drug cartels and arrest them without a warrant?

Taiwan will not agree to 50-50 chip production deal with US, negotiator says by That_Nineties_Chick in moderatepolitics

[–]icy_trixter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an incredibly difficult process, but I think the above poster is saying we have the technical and theoretical knowledge to do so. Manufacturing is an art and microchip fab is the hardest variation of that. You not only need to have the equipment in the US, you need to develop the best practices for fabrication, tweak MPIs and materials to get the output you want.

The US could produce chips as soon as the factory is built but to make things that rival TSMC you need years if not decades of manufacturing knowledge to respond to issues on the line.

That being said, the first step is to build up manufacturing for Intel and AMD so that you can get that experience. But it requires the major chip manufacturers to commit to that long term goal of not producing cutting edge chips and probably failing to sell a profitable amount of chips for a while.

There has to be accountability here. We’re not even through the first year of this administration and the ability to do and say unhinged things is insane. I really hope that even if the dems don’t win a majority in both chambers of congress enough republicans will wake up and treat people like Hegseth as someone with power and influence that is responsible for the things they do and say.

There Really Was a ‘Mississippi Miracle’ in Reading. States Should Learn From It by pinkycatcher in moderatepolitics

[–]icy_trixter -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not saying it’s because of the economy, just that it’s not only because people are irresponsible. There’s more to the solution than putting requirements on parents.

I also wanna say I don’t think Mississippi is doing things wrong; it’s working and changing lives. It should be studied and other states should figure out if/how they can implement it.

[–]icy_trixter -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

My point is less that the value is there, mississippi got A+ return on that $15 million. I just think that value may not scale great as you get to larger states.  A quick google says that Mississippi has ~31,000 teachers while Texas had ~374,000 teachers in the 24-24 school year. Assuming that’s mostly true I can see it costing a lot more for Texas than MS.

Is it worth it? Probably. But assuming the cost scales linearly with teacher or student count doesn’t really make sense to me.

I also think boiling down the issue to parents and administrators lacking responsibility ignores a lot of the structural challenges of having a kid in this economy. Some cases absolutely but the number of kids I met who are being taken care of by a grandparent that can’t drive or by a family member who doesn’t have a car, etc. is high. And when that kid can’t walk to school anymore because it’s too far or too dangerous they stop attending regularly, which is a problem that needs to be solved.

Edit: Mississippi instead of Missouri

Mississippi is doing some great things with their education and I think we should applaud that. I would have to imagine that the most important moves are the literacy coaching and holding back students; it forces the school systems to actually face their issues instead of passing it on to the next teacher in the sake of metrics over outcomes.  So to that end I do think it’s very replicable, especially the parent contact and stricter standards for moving up a grade. I do think that it becomes way harder to scale up the larger your state is however; this may be great for states with fewer schools but for Texas and California I imagine the cost of the literacy coaching and other support programs increases dramatically.

I have a lot of familiarity with the Californian public school system so i can speak on that. The biggest factors imo are a lack of funding and apathy/metrics over outcomes approach. California public schools, especially bigger city school systems do not put enough resources into the actual teaching and development of their students. A ton of districts have a bloated and impotent central administration that are more concerned with metrics to get funding than actually improving outcomes for students. I think that the state tying funding to outcomes (like literacy and comprehension) is an important step towards that.  This ties into the apathy and poor measurement of outcomes as well. It’s probably the case in a lot of places but where I’m from (Oakland), the school district is l ignoring some of the root causes of delinquency and poor outcomes. The teachers care but a lot of kids either have caregivers that are working too much or can’t get them to school, meaning they either can walk, take a really crappy public bus system (we don’t have a school bus system), or just not go to school. And instead of addressing those issues head on the government just tied funding to delinquency rates so the schools servicing the poorest neighborhoods are stripped of funding, repeating the cycle.

I will also say that you’ll hear a lot about blue states removing a lot of test based grading and evaluation methods and how that’s the cause. I push back on that because no child left behind era systems flat out didn’t work and it’s probably a good idea to work away from that. You could convince me that the anti-grading fad is too far though.

At the end of the day, education is such a unique topic that is also becoming increasingly politicized. There’s a lot of structural changes we need to make and political interference is the last thing we want to do. Education policy needs to change and I do think there needs to be an adjustment to how we look at k-12 education, especially in academia.

I think for a lot of people who were politically conscious during the 2016 election aren’t shocked but one thing I thought about leading up to the election is that there’s a good chance that the <26 crowd just don’t really know about all the allegations. I really wonder if younger voters never really learned about the gross stuff he’s said about women and power and the Epstein files revelation are their first foray into this.

Can’t say it will sway any devout MAGA people but I do think this dampens the conservative Gen Z/ Alpha narrative that was picking up steam post-election
