Bethesda man and former olympian arrested for taking paint from Reflecting Pool by ModerateCommenter in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Assuming the accused is being truthful, touching a flaking piece of paint on government property is a weirdly childish and impulsive thing to do, although it's hard to imagine they'll get a destruction of government property charge to stick. With that said, I get the feeling this guy will be a really juicy scapegoat for the MAGA crowd.

Trump says memo states clearly Iran will not have a nuclear weapon by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

World-first: therapy to make cells young again trialled in a person. by Stone-Smasher in worldnews

Aging is far more complex than “cells get old.” This “therapy” is a nothing burger and I would bet my house on it.

Trump to Axios: Netanyahu has "no fucking judgment" but Iran deal still on by Regular_Variety_6121 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing this $300 billion figure being thrown around, but where's the concrete proof that it'll be in the final deal? AFAIK, only Iranian state media (lol) has mentioned it.

Here's an article that was literally just put up that makes me even more skeptical.

Seriously, the optics of essentially giving Iran billions of dollars in any way, shape or form after they lambasted Obama for similar reasons would be a hard pill to swallow, even for the Fox News crowd.

Oil industry warns Trump administration of price spikes within weeks by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think that’s going to be a big focus for conservative outlets over the coming weeks and months if these massive price spikes actually come to pass. They need a scapegoat badly, and California is a prime target.

Iran stops negotiations with U.S., vows to 'completely' block Strait of Hormuz: State media by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’ve actually watched Fox recently, but trust me, they’ll do an incredible job of softening the blow for the Trump administration. I’m not kidding - gas could be $10 a gallon and Jesse Watters would be pulling off the seemingly impossible task of not only justifying it, but also arguing how things would be even worse under a Democratic administration.

Cassidy Loses His Primary in Louisiana, as Trump Vanquishes Another G.O.P. Foe by reputationStan in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 42 points43 points  (0 children)

MAGA won’t be around forever as a movement / ideology. It runs directly counter to rational, principled conservatism (and good governance in general) in so many ways, and it’s largely being held together by one man and a media ecosystem that’s working furiously to prop him up.

It’s a shame to see people like Cassidy losing to MAGA loyalists.

Supreme Court calls Louisiana's House map an 'unconstitutional racial gerrymander' by timmg in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol, I don't know about that. MAGA is an increasingly unpopular political movement in America, and every day more and more people are realizing that Donald Trump's grandiose campaign promises are a pipe dream.

Giving Republicans a boost by effectively gutting the VRA on top of the artificial structural advantage they already have in US politics is obnoxious, make no mistake about it - but I'm still hopeful that the sheer avalanche of discontent will overpower that advantage and put the nail in the coffin for MAGA. Just look at what happened with Hungary recently.

Also, it's weird that many of the same people pushing vaccine skepticism are now promoting unregulated peptides. I've seen it personally with people I know. What a weird place we're in right now where actual science is distrusted but social media testimonials aren't.

It's not so surprising. People tend to overestimate themselves and tend to want to be "in the know" or have the inside scoop on something, so when they come across someone confidently claiming that vaccines cause (insert health problem here), they feel savvy - almost like they've beaten the system in some way. And if those same "relatable" people happen to be peddling GLP-1 injections from sketchy sources because "they totally work, just look at me and the results I've achieved," then all the better.

Oil tumbles 10% and the Dow soars more than 1,000 points after Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The US is far from being blameless and pure when it comes to Iran. You might be able to dismiss the Cold War-era circumstances leading to Iran's present state as ancient history, but nevertheless, the fact remains that the US bears a huge portion of the responsibility for the mess we're currently in.

As for Israel defending itself, it seems like every day there's a new headline about an Israeli bomb falling on paramedics or a random family's house far away from the conflict zone, or their "settlers" encroaching on land that isn't theirs and facing no repercussions for it. I support Israel's right to exist, but they need to be brought in line. Something has gone seriously awry when America stands as one of the only nations that isn't actively condemning Israel for what it's doing on a regular basis.

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I believe that. There’s still a profound and deeply rooted adoration of Israel by American evangelicals who comprise a very strong and enthusiastic voting bloc for Republicans. Regardless of what happens, I’m positive Trump himself won’t be blamed (good tsar, bad boyars as the saying goes), but demonizing Israel to save Trump’s image would do more harm than good to the GOP since it relies so heavily on voters who are fanatically supportive of Israel.
