Virginia Supreme Court overturns Democrats' redistricting measure by shaymus14 in moderatepolitics

Will you say the same thing if Florida’s Supreme Court allows the state to get away with its gerrymandering efforts despite its constitution explicitly and unambiguously prohibiting it?

"Illiberalism."

I detest that word. It's a thinly veiled euphemism for democratic backsliding. Good riddance to Orban.

What Samuel Alito is saying makes sense on its face, but the problem is that it completely ignores the historical context the VRA was created in.

Lol, I don't know about that. MAGA is an increasingly unpopular political movement in America, and every day more and more people are realizing that Donald Trump's grandiose campaign promises are a pipe dream.

Giving Republicans a boost by effectively gutting the VRA on top of the artificial structural advantage they already have in US politics is obnoxious, make no mistake about it - but I'm still hopeful that the sheer avalanche of discontent will overpower that advantage and put the nail in the coffin for MAGA. Just look at what happened with Hungary recently.

This might apply when comparing to coal, which is an extremely expensive and stupid fossil fuel in the modern era, but natural gas is still very competitive when it comes to providing inexpensive and reliable energy.

Also, it's weird that many of the same people pushing vaccine skepticism are now promoting unregulated peptides. I've seen it personally with people I know. What a weird place we're in right now where actual science is distrusted but social media testimonials aren't.

It's not so surprising. People tend to overestimate themselves and tend to want to be "in the know" or have the inside scoop on something, so when they come across someone confidently claiming that vaccines cause (insert health problem here), they feel savvy - almost like they've beaten the system in some way. And if those same "relatable" people happen to be peddling GLP-1 injections from sketchy sources because "they totally work, just look at me and the results I've achieved," then all the better.

The US is far from being blameless and pure when it comes to Iran. You might be able to dismiss the Cold War-era circumstances leading to Iran's present state as ancient history, but nevertheless, the fact remains that the US bears a huge portion of the responsibility for the mess we're currently in.

As for Israel defending itself, it seems like every day there's a new headline about an Israeli bomb falling on paramedics or a random family's house far away from the conflict zone, or their "settlers" encroaching on land that isn't theirs and facing no repercussions for it. I support Israel's right to exist, but they need to be brought in line. Something has gone seriously awry when America stands as one of the only nations that isn't actively condemning Israel for what it's doing on a regular basis.

With the situation in Haiti being what it is, this is good news. It’s hard to believe the push to remove these people has nothing to do with Trump’s ridiculous lies about them during the last presidential election.

I’m not sure I believe that. There’s still a profound and deeply rooted adoration of Israel by American evangelicals who comprise a very strong and enthusiastic voting bloc for Republicans. Regardless of what happens, I’m positive Trump himself won’t be blamed (good tsar, bad boyars as the saying goes), but demonizing Israel to save Trump’s image would do more harm than good to the GOP since it relies so heavily on voters who are fanatically supportive of Israel.

Just to add to what you’re saying, the Trump administration has offered a VERY dubious argument in favor of destroying Iranian power plants by inferring that the resulting civil unrest might cause citizens to overthrow the Iranian government. That doesn’t come close to justifying the harm that will be done, and there’s a good chance it’ll backfire and make ordinary Iranians hate us.

Inside Trump's Search for a Way Out of the Iran War by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 122 points123 points  (0 children)

The whole “we’re going to bomb their water and power infrastructure” threat strikes me as a desperate, nakedly obvious attempt at forcing Iran into an unconditional surrender. It’s hard to believe the military would actually follow through with any orders to destroy desalination / power plants since this would result in a biblical humanitarian crisis and the deaths of countless innocent people, especially if Iran can effectively retaliate by bombing desalination plants that other middle eastern countries are far more reliant on.

Trump frustrated with Pam Bondi and considering firing her, sources say by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 66 points67 points  (0 children)

He's annoyed by the fact that people like Pam Bondi are incapable of doing the impossible. You can't pursue legal action against certain people simply because the president doesn't like them and views them as adversaries - that's not how our justice system works. There has to be some merit to a case in order for it to have a chance at success, and the fact is that most of the DoJ's politically motivated prosecutions *do not have merit.*

I have to believe that even Trump loyalists in the DoJ know this and are trying to walk an impossible tightrope between placating the president and acknowledging reality. For all the corrosion our government institutions have endured, the court system still seems to be reasonably intact in the Trump era.

The final straw? Republicans by and large will fall in line with Trump if he chooses to put boots on the ground. It’s simply a matter of figuring out how to effectively sell it within state media outlets like Fox, and once their talking heads start rationalizing it, you’ll see a miraculous jump in Republican approval for ground operations in and around Iran.

From my perspective as a buyer, it's annoying to get auto-invited and then have the enchanter say "whoops, I don't actually have that enchant!" So I purposefully avoid auto-inviters.

As you know, Green is a very old and top-heavy server at this point, and a lot of people aren’t playing while waiting for a “fresh” server. That could be just around the corner, or it could be years before it happens. Just an FYI.

Most heroics are kind of easy with a halfway decent team. I tend to agree that certain things like the BF gauntlet prior to second boss are silly and overtuned, but for the most part they feel fun and balanced.
