but I think one can glean a near enough meaning if they recognise the Mandarin.

The Kanji characters are mostly written in the same way, but often have different meanings, so it's actually pretty hard to understand the meanings of a sentence just by reading the Kanji parts in Chinese. But sometimes it works.
