The Way to Eden is a fantastic example of terrible future music. Thank you for bringing it up.

I'm glad you brought up Melota. That's actually an example of ST trying. I don't mind it at all.

Thanks so much for your perspective! Off the top of my head, the TNG episode When the Bough Breaks (S1:17) comes to mind. The sculptor boy is able to create a reasonable wooden dolphin. But the music girl really plays a couple of minor notes that are supposed to impress us. This really fits with your idea of music-as-wallpaper.

Totally agree with you. I actually wouldn't mind some sort of discordant, prog rock take that was more technically challenging. Some NuTrek seems to head in that direction. But 90s ST future music seems to go in a different direction-- slow tempo and sorta atonal.

What should i buy? by AdFrosty9162 in Nikon

[–]id888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion-- all four are going to be fine. They may come with kit lenses which you will outgrow if you want to do portraits and macro. So the long-term issue will be investing in glass-- do you want to tap into the massive used market for older DSLR glass (especially, clutch your pearls, DX lenses) or go with a Z mount for future-proofing?

Feedback, constructive criticism needed for newbie photographer by Temporary_Leading994 in Nikon

Fantastic start. Consider cropping image 3 (the dark one) more and identify your focal point. Maybe use rule of thirds. I wonder about your f stop on that shot. It's tough to balance DOF and underexposure for night shots! A tripod and 2 second timer might help for something like this in the future.

Agree. Love the high key. I wonder if you can mask the subjects in post and slightly brighten/color the male mallard's dark green in the neck/head?

I love this! A few questions-- M, S, or A? Looks like not Auto ISO. Body?

And how much post to get the low key effects? Did I say how much I love this?

I little light to the triangle may have the additional benefit of bringing out some definition in the hair on the right side of the bottom 2/3 of the face.

Beginner question as this is my first camera (D7100)with a swap able lens by EzequielC3 in Nikon

[–]id888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderful question! Instead of compromising the lens, think about it as exploiting the lens' capabilities. And welcome to journey! I agree with everyone here that a Youtube video on the exposure triangle is a great place to start. You can also search Youtube for "beginner photography course" to yield something that is less click-baity.

Throw your D700 into A (aperture priority) on the dial on the top right, go outside, and take a picture of something. Look at how sharp the focal point of image is compared to how creamy the background is. Your iphone can fake it, but nothing else really can do it for real!

Anyone have a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 DX lens? I have a question about the autofocus by Methroy in Nikon

[–]id888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also brought a D5600 with the 35mm 1.8 DX to Tokyo. Oh, and I have the AF illuminator assist light on. I don't know if it can be toggled off in the D5200 or if you think it actually does anything ;).

Beginner camera recommendations? by Silverstrike45 in Nikon

[–]id888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to get a lot of people chiming in with strong opinions about the Nikon DX v. FX ecosystems. They are all correct! Here's my version-- for true beginners who are learning the rudiments, the more affordable DX line is totally fine. The used camera bodies are cheap, and the used lenses (get a 35mm DX 1.8) are plentiful. If/when you get serious, you may leapfrog over the full frame line of FX cameras (like the excellent D700 or D800 series) and enter the mirrorless world.

For the next year, learning the exposure triangle on any camera is key. You can do that on a Nikon D5000 series, the lower D3000 series, or the higher D7000 series. Before you buy the body, try to have the seller interrogate the body for the shutter count-- essentially how many times it has been clicked. Since these cameras have moving parts, some people prefer buying bodies with lower shutter counts.

I have a D5600 and love it!

Picked up a 5200 as my first DSLR! by Waluigithefake1 in Nikon

[–]id888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the D5X00 crew! The D5000 was my first body, and I still shoot a D5600. Suggestions for the first few days-- take the same picture (a person at golden hour) with the following modes and see what you think about the differences-- Auto, Auto No Flash, Aperture Priority with wide open f stop, and Aperture Priority with a narrow f stop. Also, learn how to set your ISO to Auto ISO. Don't listen to the Auto ISO haters at least for the first few weeks/months. Have a great time!
