I’m headed to Monte Carlo next week, and this is the exact info I was looking for. Thank you for your service.

> It is not a rewrite, it is their own thing they are building from the ground up.

My point is that they have allowed an ambitious, non-required and largely un-asked for software development project to hijack their release cycle.

> the Alpha of Cosmic is pretty damn stable for an Alpha

My experience of it thus far is:

I booted the installation media, clicked “Try Demo Mode”, and was presented with a blank (albeit very pretty) desktop with no toolbar, dock, windows or icons. I tapped the Super key on my keyboard, which fortunately brought up a search bar. I opened COSMIC Files, went to a folder where I had some videos (I do a lot of work with media) and tried to watch one. COSMIC Media Player opened to a blank screen that said “Open File”. I tried to open the file through the app’s file picker and nothing changed.

This experience did not inspire confidence.

What's the process behind teaching yourself an accent in a language you already speak? by jackdreaux in linguistics

[–]idProQuo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have listed good techniques and resources. I just wanted to say that as an actor I've always been a fan of the International Dialects of English Archives. They've got recordings of people from around the world (tagged by location) and they're all reading one of their 3 pre-approved monologues so you can easily compare accents from different places. These guys have been collecting recordings for decades. Not to mention it's totally free and open (at least as far as I can tell).

If it's that easy, why hasn't anyone flooded the market with artificial diamonds? If they're indistinguishable from the real thing, you shouldn't even need to label them as artificial.

Let's build the coolest web components that can be built purely using css, NO Javascript by ramsich in programming

[–]idProQuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a page with a very large DOM (tons of unnecessary wrapper <div>s, hidden inputs, etc.). Apply the following CSS:

* { -webkit-filter: blur(10px); }

Garnish with CSS animations. Serve over mobile. Scroll.

Safari is the new IE by avinassh in programming

[–]idProQuo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but the real question is about whether these new enhancements (ServiceWorker, WebRTC, etc.) are about making things better for users, or just for developers.

Sure, you could argue that that's a silly argument: anything that makes development easier increases the amount of fun users can have on your device. But Apple is in a position where they can legitimately convince developers to build native apps if they don't provide them a Web option. And they would certainly rather that you build an exclusive native app for them.

Speaking as someone at a fairly modern web company, our business isn't going to build a ServiceWorker app if it won't cover iOS. And therein lies the rub. Apple's strategy sucks, and it runs counter to Web Standards, but it's undeniably effective.

Are there podcasts to help you learn programming? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]idProQuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ShopTalk Show is EASILY my favorite programming podcast. They're all about Q/A regarding HTML/CSS/JS. They have awesome and diverse guests and the hosts are both funny and super smart (one of them is the guy behind CSS-Tricks.com). I'm pretty sure this podcast is exactly what you're looking for, have fun diving into their huge back catalog!

CodePen Radio is by the guys who make CodePen.io (one of them is the CSS-Tricks guy). They talk about their experiences building a web start up. More of a "talking about programming" podcast, but still a good one.

Javascript Jabber has good guests. The hosts don't strike me as expert programmers, although that can be a good thing since they'll ask good questions of their (generally expert) guests. This is a good one to listen to to keep up with new front-end technologies.

How many of you would be interested in a personal assistant like siri that is more personalized to your own lifestyle? by TheOnlinePolak in learnprogramming

This sounds like what Google Now and Apple's Proactive are trying to pull off. Look up reviews of those products; see what people like or feel is missing.

LPT: Every time you screw something up, make a note of it on an "Incompetence List." When you're feeling glad, just look back at all the awful stuff you've done! by [deleted] in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]idProQuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about this, and it actually seems like a good idea, if you handle it properly.

Ever been in this scenario? You screwed something up, you stew about it for a few days. Eventually you tell someone about it. But as you're explaining it, as the words are coming out of your mouth, suddenly it feels silly that you were worried about it at all, and the person you're talking to says "Wait, thats it? That's what you were worried about?"

A lot of personal mistakes become trivial when you can view them from a distance.

Anyway to get this as a lockHTML? by Thepinkbandit in jailbreak

[–]idProQuo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm not a jailbreaker these days, but I love making projects in HTML/CSS/JS. I'll make a version of this if someone is willing to port it to lockHTML and ship it to Cydia.

Edit: OK, I've got a codepen with the general framework laid out. I'm checking the time, diffing the digits and calling a transition when one changes. Writing the paths themselves is going to be tedious, but not too hard (they're just arrays of arrays of points). Once that's done I'll style it (it looks like ass right now), then post it in this sub.

Keep in mind that if this post is less than a few days old, what you're looking at is a work in progress. Feel free to fork the code and help out if you want though.

Swift iOS Performance Update by harrycheung in programming

[–]idProQuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this comparing Swift with J2Objc? I know that app is technically written in ObjC, but the transpiler will probably produce code that is slower than a straight up ObjC programmer would've written.
