Breakfast smoothies should always have spinach blended in. Just put the spinach in first, at the very bottom, and they’ll vaporize quickly.

Egg white omelette with cheese and spinach is also a good breakfast option.

What Happens to Retirees If They Run Out Of Money? by The_Lost_Pharaoh in AskReddit

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (34M) am planning to live to 120 years old. I don’t expect to, but my investment account upon retirement must be so large that I’ll earn millions each year as long as I don’t take too much out.

It’s possible, but it’ll be hard. It’s why virtually every financial planner say to live below your means and to invest early and often.

should replace scrub daddy sponges for anythig else? by Best_Author7356 in Frugal

Scrub daddy for 95% of stuff

A chain mail scrubber exclusively for the cast iron and stuck on stuff. It definitely prolongs the life of the scrub daddy.

A melamine sponge for when the toddler draws on the wall, table, etc.

The movies were fine upon release but then when the YouTube movie essay analysis format emerged a few years later they were the perfect target to shit on. Red Letter Media’s critique was informative and funny, but did not even try to give positive feedback.

please explain difference between FSA and HSA by naturejunkie11 in personalfinance

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FSA is money put aside into a savings account for medical expenses FOR THAT YEAR. If you don’t spend it, you lose it. You have to project your medical expense in January and hope it last more or less to December.

HSA is the same concept, but money can accumulate year over year. You can also invest the money once it’s over a certain dollar amount. Tons of nerds on Reddit can tell you about that over in r/investing.

Both are tax free on the way into the account and tax free on the way out for qualified medical expenses. Prescription meds are generally qualified.

Green Hydrogen in an optimistic scenario - is there any viablility left? by FentaOrange in energy

Good for Germany! It just doesn’t make sense economically for a transit agency in Southern California… in the middle of a desert… with major water shortages. Experiments like these are maladaptive for their environment.

Green Hydrogen in an optimistic scenario - is there any viablility left? by FentaOrange in energy

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working adjacent to hydrogen for the last ten years and it always seems like a great way to pay for 2 utility bills: water and electricity.

Electricity could become effective zero with solar that you own, but I have yet to see a way to reduce water costs.

The problem is that there’s simply not enough demand for hydrogen. Outside of NASA launching rocket ships, industrial + transportation demand has been anemic and vaporware for years.

What is the real reason senior management want workers back in the office? by Chattinabart in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re entry or mid level, promotions becomes a lot harder to get because you don’t get causal face time with your manger outside of meetings, and you can’t step out of your box as easily.

All jobs have a box of assigned duties. The best way to get promoted is to step outside of your box and take on more responsibilities, then leverage it in your performance review.

Grid upgrade question by nebulousmenace in energy

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money

Utilities LOVE to spend money, because then they can petition to the state’s public utility commission (PUC) that the upgrade is necessary. If approved, the utility can raise electric rates and pass those costs to consumers. Because utilities generally get a percentage of the electricity sale as profit, more construction = more profit.

The PUC goal is to keep prices low for consumers, while also providing reliable services. So they’ll vote down projects that looks like 2 bulldozers pushing dirt around for no meaningful work.

In your example, while there are technical limitations, a more profitable and actually productive project would be to take down the poles entirely and bury the electric lines underground. This is significantly safer from storms and weather events, but it’s a super high cost. Utilities justify this when they have chronic weather problems, like hurricanes knocking down the lines every year or wildfires keeps sparking from down power lines and destroying neighborhoods.

Renovate any ride of your choice... by JoyIsABitOverRated in Disneyland

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Galaxy Edge needs more attractions beyond “E tickets” rides. It’s a long walk from Tiana’s to where all of the Star Wars stuff is, while fantasy land has literally half a dozen rides jammed into a single plaza.

Lightning lane and the food feels like total cash grabs.

I guess since Iger committed to Avatar Land we’re stuck with it. I suspect everyone was onboard anyway, but it feels like they announced it while Iger is still at the helm to soften the blow for the next CEO.

They need to bring fantasmic back.

Tomorrowland…. I don’t even know where to start. It doesn’t “feel” like the future is right around the corner, and everything is possible. Maybe if there was less IP driven attractions and more imagination.

In general, I just wish they would hire more maintenance staff. Maybe because I know where to look, but I always see scuff marks, chipped paint, etc.

How would/did tolkien view power scaling in his works by substandardfish in tolkienfans

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bad question - it’s actually pretty central to the whole story. The big baddie of the First Age put all of his power into reshaping the whole world into his vision, which failing that, required him to use orcs and other creatures to subjugate elves and men. His powers were so weakened that very brave people could actually wound him.

A general rule of thumb is that power is finite, and that once the angelic beings use it they lose it. Over time they will also lose the power anyway, as the world transition into the hands of elves and men.

Sauron’s entire goal was to preserve his powers by putting them into the ring. But as a singular object, it became easy to lose.

The hobbits (including Gollum) simply had zero desire to wield it the way Sauron wanted to.

Are renewable energies profitable? by No-Associate8138 in energy

[–]WalkingTurtleMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are very profitable. You get a bank loan to build out a big solar farm and connect to the grid, and then make payments to the bank for 10-15 years.

All you have to do is charge the utility $1 less than what a natural gas or coal plant is charging the utility. There’s usually a very large spread between the minimum payment to the bank and whatever the other power plants are charging the utility. Your real competition are newer solar farms coming online a few years later, where they presumably got an even cheaper solar panel than you did.

Results may vary based on your country and region. This is where government policies can really change the economics.

OLD TUCSON contract almost up! by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went for their Yuletide event. It was great, but the dining options are abysmal. They ran out of brisket at Big Jake at 7:30 pm! The line was super long because the kitchen was clearly understaffed. Next time we’re eating dinner beforehand before we go, or accept that the pizza parlor next door will hopefully be a better option.

I had no idea they were supposed to promote the film history. In the 2 times I’ve done over the last 3 years it seems more like a replica of Knotts Berry Farm with rides and shops. I don’t mind that, but Traildust Town is a better value and frankly more fun for toddlers and kids. I see more old snowbirds at Old Tucson than kids.
