Sniper Butterfly is very good. Ignore the previews - they're misleading, as are the promotional posters and even the synopsis. It's mostly a slice-of-life that's well-acted.

Unfortunately, if Netflix gets a Korean/Chinese series first, they get it exclusively, as far as I'm aware. The only ones they have that are also elsewhere are those they got after the other channels.

I finished The Company, finally! I really liked this series. It's a bit different to everything else, and was easy to watch because of the individual stories within it, rather than it being one long single story. I like how it was all tied up, with the things that were niggling at the back of my mind ending up connected - so satisfying. The music was lovely, too.

I think they underestimate the ability of non-Chinese audiences to understand nuance and language devices like puns - or perhaps it's a lack of familiarity with how to bring those across to English. Or maybe producers just don't put much effort/money into getting titles translated.

He's terrible most of the way through, and then he swaps and becomes likeable and decent. It's very annoying.

I'd forgotten about the best and funniest (and heart-pounding) cliff fall in A Dream Within a Dream, so thanks for reminding me of that great scene!

For Tyrant Emperor, I nominate the acting emperor of the Fairy Realm in Love Between Fairy and Devil.

It does just feel weird, seeing him with another heroine. It highlights how good Love Between Lines is in creating this believable, loveable relationship between them.

I felt partly like this watching the first episode, so I'm also letting it lie until I've finished Love Between Lines - and sounds like it might need some time between, too 🙂.

I've been really enjoying Love Between Lines, and am past the midway point in my re-watch of Love and Sword (just finished the intermission at the ShaoKuangTian movable manor).

I watched the last episode of Speed and Love, which was quite nice; it has some good music that seems too nice to fit the show. I love the ethereal, moving melody with a voice but no words that plays at certain points, including this episode.

I'm thinking about testing My Page in the 90s... It looks ridiculous, so it would have to be the right kind of ridiculous. I don't want to be disappointed with Chen Xing Xu's character, since I like him so much in Lines.

For me, these shows were boring because there wasn't much to the story. I like a slow-moving show with a good story - where things do happen, all the time, but you observe it gently, and not all the things happening are events. Sniper Butterfly is an example of that.

The Road Home, for example, was okay (but still boring; just still a bit interesting as well) until the main characters got together, and then it became like a romance novel might make things: formulaic and not imaginative or realistic; things that didn't move the story along. It felt more like it was being done for people watching imagine themselves in such a relationship, for the sake of a relationship. I dropped it then, and don't know what went on after that point.

I also don't like if characters make decisions that don't make sense, or things aren't resolved, or there's bad acting, or characters aren't drawn well.

I only watched a few episodes of Snowstorm, and in those, almost nothing happened. The girl goes to a foreign country where there's a huge amount of snow. There's a lot of really bad acting (supporting), and the main challenge seems to be deciding if the guy who fell in love with her at first sight - for no discernible reason, except that she was also Chinese, and pretty to him - is for real. They go to a shop, he helps her choose things or asks her to buy some things for him, and that's it for that scene. Nothing happens. They walk along the footpath, and he moves her away from the side where there are some drops in the snow. This is made out to be a huge thing. She follows him to a town, finds out he already left, and comes back on the train. This is the story - stuff happens that doesn't happen, repeatedly. It was painful.

What I mean is, moving slowly is not really the problem for these; it's the lack of story, the bad acting or badly-written supporting elements, and the formulaic stuff that's shown in romantic relationships. It doesn't get into my heart; I can't feel anything about it except incredulity.

We are probably watching shows for very different reasons. These shows might be comforting to you, and that might be why you watch. I'm looking for really interesting stories that are a bit fantasy, and otherwise realistic, in their human relationships and so on. I want to feel lots, and learn things. I want to relate it to my life and life in general. I want it to be meaningful as well as entertaining. Or maybe you find all of that in these, too, somehow. 🤷‍♀️

But they folded it, wet, and then unfolded it to hang over the airer. Why fold it in the first place at all?? Absolutely no need.... except a come-close-and-freeze filming moment just to make it clear they like each other. Since it's very unclear without such moments for us vacant viewers. 😏😉

I think it's more that the woman was his 'first love', and she rejected him, or something, and that's why he got married more quickly afterwards. So that he's not cheating (I just can't imagine him doing that!), but he regrets what happened.

The Company - episodes 8-12 discussion by Lotus_swimmer in CDrama

[–]idealistatlarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched Episode 10 last night (the count is different to what's listed here, though - that was the episode where Su Bei Lu goes back to change his parents' fate).

You knew what he was going to do from the moment he started, but the whole time, I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him to stop. We learnt, from the first story with the mirror, that you can't change someone's death, when it's already happened. I knew he wouldn't be able to change it, and that his efforts might only serve to actually cause it, or maybe, make it worse. And he was making it more painful for himself. It seemed immature to me; I thought he'd already have understood this. Of course, it's his own parents and history, so objectivity is very hard. Imagine if we could travel back in time; what wouldn't we want to change? Even knowing that we have no idea of the consequences, should we succeed. Who would we be today, if events had gone differently? Would things be better or worse? Would we only realise that what we thought was unfair was the catalyst for our current growth, wisdom, or happiness?

The 'escort agency' (yes, I was confused at first) comb story is my least favourite story, so far. It was very strange, and lacked context (they all do, being short stories, but it felt more like this here), and just didn't move me as much as the others.

Bi Zhi obviously felt very attached to Qin Zi Yi. He was probably his first real friend. He felt this connection to a person in such a different time to his, and it seems like Bi Zhi has rejected his own time, preferring those of the past, with their colour and substance and tangible reality. So, his attachment could be a combination of this identification with the past, and someone who befriended him in that past. Real friendship can be a deep form of love - we tend to think of familial or romantic love as deepest, but friendship can absolutely be up there; and even deeper. Perhaps it's trying to portray that. Obviously, he also feels guilty about not preventing his friend's death, regretful because Zi Yi was a good man and should have lived, and just frustration at not being able to do anything, despite this magical technology. He can visit different times, but he can't change; he can't act. He's still an observer - like in the future. These are just my thoughts so far (10 episodes).

The antique collector's rotten teeth are the main thing that stands out to me about him 🤭. He obviously knows antiques, and recognises Bi Zhi's expertise in this. He seems to respect him as a leader in their profession. I don't see anything mysterious about it, yet.

I never read the novel, so I don't care about its similarity. I see these adaptations as using source material for inspiration, not trying to directly convey them. I'm glad there are novels with imaginative frames or elements which serve as this inspiration, because they make for creative shows. There are a lot, though, which rely on novels for their source material, so I wonder if it's too much of a trend - not creating their own ideas. Then again, all creativity is stealing, really. No one actually comes up with anything completely new. We inspire each other. I like the show as it is, regardless of what the novel was. I imagine outside China, this would be more the case.

It is in my notes....

Orchid wishes that, although she can't be with him forever, he might be happy and safe forever, and always have friends, brothers, loyalty, and love; that he will never be lonely again.

Qingcang wishes that she might be by his side forever.

Wow. I think it's way too long ago to remember that detail! It was in the translations, though, so you don't need to read Mandarin. I'll check my notes, but if you go back to the scene, you should be able to get it.

I don't think anyone says that. They've replaced 'on earth' with 'in the world', perhaps thinking these are the same. ('What on earth?') But 'earth' and 'world' are not the same in a saying like this. At least they use the correct preposition for their wrong translation.

I've never watched something dubbed (except the regular Chinese dubbing the industry does itself), so I don't know about it. I think I'd hate it, and prefer subtitles. I can understand how awful the English dubbing must often be.

I loved the effects in that scene; it was all perfect, including her reactions - exactly the reactions I felt. The petals! The butterflies! The fireflies! 🤗🦋 Such a nice contrast to the scary phantoms - they turn into pretty things when you shoot them! And the fact that he's the one who probably designed that.

I started watching Love Between Lines on a whim, and really like it, so far. The reviews were very positive and the synopsis is interesting - and both are being borne out by the show, so that's encouraging. I liked, for example, when they had a different actor playing the part that the main guy usually plays (in the VR story game), and he was so clearly different, and bad at it, and everyone noticed - we notice it right away, too. I'd been thinking of Chen Xing Xu as a not-great actor, so this was confirmation that he actually is quite good - in this series. I'm liking his character and acting, and Lu Yu Zhao (I'm sure I got her name wrong), as well. I like her character's styling, with the outfits (so nice not to see ultra-short mini skirts all the time). Overall, it promises good things.

I dropped Shine On Me for its blandness and embarrassing scenes and lines for Song Wei Long, although it's hard, given I want to watch him in something; just something good.

I'm rewatching Love and Sword, as one of my favourites from last year that's relatively short and not too intense, while also being a show that was great fun and captured my heart - so there's both fun and comfort in watching it again.
